Why do dudes play as female characters?

I've been seeing this pretty damn often and am seriously curious as to what the reason is, as I can't seem to think of a good one. Whenever I inquire for an objective answer all I receive is nonchalant nancys presenting the fallacious and defensive "Why does it matter what other people do"?

I see this all the time in games like Monster Hunter, Dark Souls 2, Destiny and Diablo 3 (when I used to play those), etc. Is it just miscers who are subtly hinting they want my d, or perhaps women trapped in male bodies and this is their means of expressing their true gender identity?

I always used to create game characters that I'd think of as me in the game world, but having started playing RPG's when you start to make many alts you start thinking of making characters that aren't "you" but a character made for that world, it's sort of like role play I guess but it's not like you take on the personification of that character like true RP'ers do, it's more like controlling a character in any game where there is a female lead like Heavenly Sword, The Last of Us, Metroid Prime, Bayonetta etc, you don't stay away from those games because they have you playing as females right? Or select only male characters in fighting games etc. You play those games and just don't associate your own identity with the character you are controlling, and the same thing happens in RPG's when you make several characters.

I've seen this thread so many times throughout my years of mmorpging and I can't figure out if people are srs or not. I'll reply seriously though:

It doesn't mean anything. I'm simply taking on a character.

If I play as an chaotic evil necromancer in a rpg, does that mean I a sick twisted sadist?
If I play as a priest or paladin in a mmorpg, does that mean I am religious?

No. Just like I simply want to play as a female sometimes. Why? Maybe I think an agile hunter would be cool to be female. Maybe I think the animations look cool. Maybe I just feel like it.

It is possible to like a female character in a movie/game without it relating to sex.

I knew guy who played as a female in games. While he wasn't obsessed, he seemed SRS about he subject. I think most who do play as females are nerds/neck beards.

People who make this statement might be secretly gay. Never once have I focused or thought about focusing on an animated male's ass. Something like that hasn't even crossed my mind and why should it?
