Never thought of it like that, but considering the cost of some adjustable sets vs something like the Costco Inspire FTX, yeah it's a good point.

I'll add more pairs, buy loadable handles, or get heavy-handle Ironmasters. I don't actually have anything against adjustable dumbbells. I enjoyed my Powerblocks for many years and just prefer the feel of a full set.

That said, I don't do any dumbbell work below 4-6 reps (usually 8-12), and there aren't currently any DB exercises that I value where I need or even want to go above 100 lbs. I'm just not that strong. And at 40, it doesn't look like I will be, though I'm going to keep at it. Needing more weight is a problem I hope to have!

IronMasters are nice, but I don't see much more convenience as opposed to spinlock loadable dumbbells. Powerblocks are definitely the easiest to swap weight.

I would steer clear of any PB with urethane, which has been known to fail. Also, there was a thread about the knurled grip not being very good. Above 90 lbs, I don't think PB as quick to change either, but I only had 90s. You'd probably be better off getting Elites and ordering handles from JD Equipped. Very expensive and I haven't used them, but they look sweet. Personally, I love a good knurled handle, but I liked the non-knurled factory PB handle fine.

For me it's space and money.

My gym area is small and I'm cheap. A set of chrome one inch handles and a few hundred pounds of standard weights and I'm set. I can do pairs from five to two hundred pounds.

I found some guy selling a set of 75lbs iron masters + the iron master bench for $800. Pretty damn good deal, but I'd never use the bench. It's tempting though..... I really like my EXPs though and how easy it is to change the weights.

This can also increase risk of injury, but to that point it's much easier to bail on a set of dumbbells in seated or standing OHP than a regular barbell.

I'm not short on space, but in one pair of PB Sport EXPs, I have the equivalent of 28 pairs of dumbbells that would weigh in excess of 5000 lbs and I can transport them easily.

In fairness the pricing of $1200 on the FTX vs a set of high end adjustable dummbells (Ironmaster to 120/160lbs or Powerblock to 125lbs) is fairly similar once shipping etc...is factored. Space needed to store/employ is also about the same. A $1k Concept2 vs an $250k pool (not sure what an olympic size pool runs) in dollars and space isn't at all similar nor close. That said I own both an FTX and Powerblocks to 130lbs and do not view them as substitute nor really even similar products unless defined very loosely.

At the end of the day it's about an individual's preferences and needs. I want to own dumbbells as an option but they aren't remotely important enough to me to dedicate a huge amount of money or space to separates. Others prioritize dumbbell work differently and have different dollar/space constraints. Powerblocks are great for me, thrilled to own them.
