Used to be a diver for 10 years. Standing on the springboard at 6 in the morning wearing wet speedos is not fun at all, going to the gym at 6 is nothing I'd probably be going earlier if the gym was opened that time. Just make sure the alarm is loud enough and away from the bed.

I did it for two years and had the best gains ever.
Then I moved back to evenings and have stalled. The reason? Because something always seems to come up so right after our spring break trip I'm going back to the mornings.
Yes it's a struggle at first but once you get used to it then it's such a relief to not worry about when you'll fit in a workout later on.

My workouts begin at 5:15. Some days it's easy, some days it's not. If I don't get it in early I'm more likely to skip it.

6:20 for me, and commercial not home gym, which feels like 3:30 as I'm not a morning person ......but morning workouts are starting to change that.
The routine goes like:
5:30 alarm
5:35 drink an espresso and a protein shake first, then mix up a post-training shake and in-workout drink, get my lunch out of the fridge and put that all together with my gym bag which has shower gear and a hanger with my suit for work.
5:55 caffeinated pre-workout drink
6:00 leave home
6:15 to 6:20 arrive at the gym
I usually get to start training by 6:20 or 6:25, having had 45 minutes for the first caffeine shot to get into me. Once you get started it's pretty much always OK. The hardest part is often going to bed before 9:30Training journal and diary: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=155348593

If you have ever seen rocky 4
I used to train in my garage (in Maine) at 4am. Literally anywhere from minus 18- minus 2 and im there with my coffee, knit cap, hooded sweatshirt, work gloves and sweat pants grinding out a pump for 45 minutes prior to work.
I prefer that over driving to the gym at that time.
Morning workouts are great though. Makes you feel good all day, can feed all day.

Wake up at 5am and usually in my home gym by 5:30-45ish... When I went to a commercial gym or when I travel, I'm usually at the gym before 6am too.
I find that if I workout later in the day, I'm either bloated from eating, depleted (tired), or just too much stuff gets in the way. This way I can ensure that I will have an uninterrupted workout, at least.

The toughest part of 5am workouts for me, is how I feel when I first wake up. This comes with a big sacrifice, as I need to be in bed no later than 9pm. If I don't sleep well during the night, or even so much as a glass or two of wine with dinner the night before screws up my energy levels the next morning.
