How's Lent going?

An old buddy just came into the faith and is really veering toward the Red Letter Christian movement. I've tried explaining that God's love does not overshadow His justice and is not a scapegoat for tolerance and acceptance of sin.

For example, he believes that gay marriage is acceptable to God because of the love the couple has for each other and that the union was done out of love and since "all things should be done out of love", it is permissible in God's eyes. Then he backs it with verses that talk about Christ eating with sinners as proof. I'm at my wits end trying to explain God's love doesn't conflict with condemnation of things not ordained by Him. Are there any sources that might explain it better than I can?

- God is perfect

Now if he agrees with you there, then you can at least move the discussion forward, otherwise you'll need to battle out those issues first.

Then ask him, if God is unchanging and perfect (which you both agreed to), how can he contradict himself by saying it's a sin on one hand then condoning it on another. A perfect and unchanging God is incapable of contradiction.

I personally consider evil in an Augustinian-Thomistic view insofar as it is a privation of a good that should inhere in something. Thus, "evil" itself is parasitic, it only exists as a lack of the good, but does not have ontological value outside of relation to the good. Thoughts?

Seems like it has more to do with what you're saying with doing yoga is a prerequisite for the new age white male atheist male being "spiritual". May as well target Prius drivers and Starbucks drinkers while they're at.

I personally think going with that route will definitely put him in a bind. God Laws do change (Hebrews 7:12) as evidenced in the Scriptures:

-God allowed incest in the beginning (the marriage between Abraham and Sarah was incestuous).
-God permitted divorce for any reason in the Old Covenant (Deuteronomy 24:1-4).
-God forbade eating pork, wearing clothing mixed with wool and linen etc in the Old Covenant.
-God forbade people doing any work on Sabbath in the OT (Numbers 15:32-36).
-Before Sinai, Noah and his family were permitted to eat all kinds of meat (Genesis 9:1-4).

If God does not change as you claim, surely the New Testament is a work of fiction then!

Pretty much. The irony is that despite all the spiritual words used in yoga classes (I've taken a few), there's very little spirituality in it, at least in its western form. It's useful body stretches marketed with eastern terms and has as little to do with Hinduism as it does Christianity. But hey, whatever gets chicks to wear yoga pants.
