Q&A IFBBpro Chris Tuttle / Universal Athlete / Registered Dietitian / Prep Coach

What's up guys?! I will give you a brief background about myself. I have my Masters in Nutrition and work as a Clinical Registered Dietitian at a local hospital. I also run a side business specializing in weight loss and contest preparation which I started in 2012. I earned my pro card at NPC Nationals in 2013 as a light heavy weight and recently signed with Universal. I am currently getting ready for my Pro debut in the 212s at NY pro on May 10th.

Fun facts: I raced motocross my entire life. starting riding at age 5 and turned pro in 2004. I have broken 9 bones, 4 concussions, and had over 40 stitches from racing. Soon after I competed in my first show in 2005 as a middle weight and got smoked! Have not stopped since 2005!

Check out Tuttle Diaries so you guys can get to know me a little better. I will also post some pics from nationals as well as current progress pics.

    Thanks!

How did you get discovered by universal? Any recommendations or tips for someone who eventually wants to be sponsored by the same company?

Welcome Chris. Loving the Universal series. Look forward to seeing how you do in your pro debut.

Raced with any big names when you turned pro in motocross? Must've just been when the four strokes were becoming the norm.

    Bring back JS7!

They contacted me. It did not happen right after I got my pro card either. About a year later. They look for a good fit for their company. I really do not know of any tips to be honest. Maybe focus on why you are different than everyone else.

Yes, my first pro race I road with John Dowd, Broc Hepler, Justin Bucklew, Keith Johnson, Tony Laruso. It was great and scary at the same time. I got my ass handed to me. Whole new ball game on that level! I placed 14th that race and got a 4th place hole shot. Their speed was just to fast. Yes, I road 2004 YZF 250F that year. Those 4 strokes today are unreal!

Damn haven't heard the name Broc Hepler in a while. He was heralded as the next big thing then I guess got injured and hasn't been heard of since. You've got to have some serious gonads to race at that level.

My man it was no joke. I was amazed at their speed. Like I said I got a 4th place shot and ended up 14th. I could not pace any of them! They were so fast it was unreal. Corners, straights, whoops, everything!!! At the time I just could not fathom they can go that fast. It was a good experience but a wake up call. I was 21 years old and most of those guys were under 20 and hauling ass.

Does your contract with Universal limit you to how much content you can put out to the fans, ie. YouTube Videos, etc.. ? Love your series the Tuttle Diaries, it's nice seeing more "lifestyle" videos than 100% training.. I enjoy the mix, keep em coming if you can!

Welcome to the forums! I have really enjoyed the tuttle diarys series. Glad to see you here. Also as far as uploading pics, just upload them to imgur and then use the message board code they give you. Makes it much easier.

First off, thanks so much for starting this thread. It's always great to get a pro's s perspective, and in your case someone with extensive knowledge in nutrition as well.

My question is, in your experience have you come across people who cannot tolerate carbs well? My carb intake is by no means that low (~200g/day) but this is mainly from veg sources. Once I start introducing other sources, oats, rice, wheat, it seems like I gain fat really easily. I see people who weigh much less than I do taking in a ton of carbs while I have to stick to protein, fat and veg. What's up with that? And is there a way to coax your body into accepting or working better on different (more) carbs?

    Thanks
    Team General Mills

Yes it should be interesting. I am tall so I am not going to appear as thick as most of those elfs do. I do plan in coming in shredded!

    Thanks
You may have to cycle the carbs. 3 days carbs around 300-400 and bring them back down to 200 for 4-5 days. How many grams of protein and fat are you taking in? Remember when you are low carb and introduce a larger amount of carbs your body will have a slight rebound with water which may appear as fat. After a few days it should level off though. I mean you could also get progressive and do 200 for a week, 250 for a week, 300 for a week, and then re-assess. What is your weight and height? Cardio at all?

Thanks for the tip! I will get on that this week!

No it does not . The more the better really. I would like to keep the content informative and interesting. So if I did too much to quick I might run out of good content to be able to keep it consistent and good. There is going to be many more Tuttle Diaries to cover my prep and of course exiting contest prep and off season for next year as well.

Any topics anyone would like me to too touch on please let me know.

Welcome Chris, I'd like to piggy back off this lol. I lost some weight a bit ago (roughly a year or so, 20 or so lbs) and I try to keep my carbs low as thats what worked for me. Doubt my carbs get anywhere in the 200 range anymore, normally less than 100g maybe as I tend to gain weight mainly in the stomach/midsection, I wanna put on some clean mass yet not pack on the stomach. Any suggestions? Thanks...

Are you referring to making weight? I first start with cutting sodium in half, keeping water in, then mild diuretics, cut water out, and use sauna for the remainder of weight to lose. Going in at only 5 min in a clip then cooling off completely. Watching for signs of severe dehydration. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS and should not be repeated. I lost 14 lbs in about 18 hours. Never cramped, never got dizzy, never felt faint, no irregular heart beat, just fatigue. Precautions? My father was with me and he is an MD. Also I never cut salt all the way out and I never use diuretics that excrete K+ (potassium)

Well as stated above, whenever you increase carbs a substantial amount after a period of low carb dieting there will be a water rebound from the carbs. This is where you feel softer. When in actuality your body will adjust. It is nearly impossible for a experienced lifter / body builder (proper weight training and diet for 3+ years) to gain muscle while staying very lean. Some may get away with it because of genetics but that is it. You should expect to gain a little fat / water while attempting to gain muscle. Remember your body needs about 250 + calories above what you require in a day to gain muscle. You could as mentioned above increase carbs for a period of time and then reduce for a few days, and repeat. This way you can control body fat levels. Also keep in mind that insulin is the most anabolic hormone in the body. Carb stimulate insulin. So building muscle on low carb makes it more difficult.

Heya Chris, I just wanna know
If a mixture of potassium citrate and magnesium citrate in the form of syrup can be used as electrolyte supplement if I feel like my intake is not optimal. About 5 - 10 ml a day.
    This is the profile

    Noculi-B6
    Potassium citrate 1100 mg,
    magnesium citrate 375 mg,
    pyridoxine hydrochloride 20
    mg/5 mL.

    Thanks
