Does punching a punching bag build muscle?

    Hello Forum Members,
Today I began using this 100+ pound punching bag I have had for months but never had the time to try it out. I workout using either machines or barbells/dumbbells. I was wondering what muscles punching a punching bag workout? I did 15 minutes on the bag today, I like it because its a good way to work cardio and my dad says it helps muscles but which ones? Thank you in advance.

i have a heavy bag & speed bag, and use Bas-Rutten's MMA/Boxing CDs (old school) for training if I do not have anyone to spar or hold focus pads for. I do not feel like heavy bag workouts have built muscle, but my shoulder endurance has increased.

No not from just a heavy bag, but it burns calories and can give shoulder definition. A lot of boxing gyms have strength training elements that can build muscle for beginners. My boxing gym that I have been at on and off since I was about 15 1/2 has us do tire flips, sled pushing, tons of abs work, medicine ball work, resistance bands work, push ups, hammer curls, on top of sparring and all kinds of bag work.
