BH - Mel Melle Talking About The State of Hip Hop

Hey, John, I was listening to some old school on youtube and this came up on the suggested videos. What do you think about this? I don't really keep up with the artists and the culture. I just like the music, so I don't know what he's saying about today's hip hop being all about youtube and facebook and booze.

"Blessed be the Lord my rock, who trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle." - Psalm 144:1

Mel was down with Flash, they rolled in the Patterson Projects in the Bronx back in the days and I agree with him. I also will take it a step further that most hip hop artist are not even real. In other words they can say whatever the hell they want and the youth buys it, whether they lived the life or not. There are some rappers out there right now where they borrow most of the things you see on their videos, just to "make" the video but truly don't have anything.

I still follow hip hop and while it is making more money now then back in the days, it is truly trash except for a few real artist.

You got any names of new guys I can listen to? I don't think I've picked up any new music since DMX was new. I remember listening to Grandmaster Flash when I was 12. One of my friends had a cassette, the one with "The Message" on it. Good ****.

I'm a former rapper! If you count a not very successful high school performance.
Mainstream is mostly garbage, and I don't care to follow it, but there's some good underground hip hop - old and new.

A few tracks for the heck of it.

Here a few channels I've gone through, should be a few thousand in there, but mostly 90's stuff:

www.youtube.com/user/OGDonNinja - several rare ones, mostly east coast I think - which I like best now anyways
    www.youtube.com/user/VinylRulezzz
www.youtube.com/user/DjHazey82 - some great remixes by this DJ

All I can add is that Melle Mel and that Grandmaster flash , got my brother sacked, fired, from his job many years ago

he worked for the local council painting road markings
and he took the song "White lines, don't do it" literally, and was fired for it.

Although if they play I would listen, I just don't go out of my way to listen to old school stuff just because, ya feel me?

**** that I love old school hip hop and don't even know any of the new stuff. Moment I'm in the car it's channel 46 Sirus (old school) and I catch Ed Lovers show at 7 on the ride into the gym.

My definition of old school hip hop are artists like Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Naughty by Nature, MC Ren, Ice Cube and Eazy Motherfuken E

    LOL, I hear ya.

For the record The Sugar Hill Gang was a group, not really hip hop street, they just became mainstream because they introduced hip hop to radio, although realistically the first rap on the radio was from a group called The Fatback Band, but they sucked.

I was listening to Rap/hip hop before it came out on the radio, real sh!t that was jammed on the streets and sold via cassettes that were recorded live.

If you were real you got the tape right from the DJ equipment, by connecting directly to it, the night of the jam, but you had to know the peeps. If your sh!t was a "toy" it was recorded from someone who recorded it from someone who had the original.

I lived in Newburgh. We didn't have access to city tapes back then...well not direct from the DJs. By the time I got into hip hop it was more mainstream. I think NWA was my first rap tape and it went from there. As a 16-19 year old we were all trying to reenact the move Juice and New Jack City. **** uptown Anthem from NBB was in my car on constant loop blasting from my Alpine stereo

Plenty of quality Hip-Hop out there. It just isn't on the radio.

Right on to the real, and death to the fakers. Peace out.

Agree, you just have to look for it. I understand most here have no interest in foreign hip hop, but the rest of the world has listened to it for decades as well.
Pretty sure the french have a lot of good stuff if you don't really care about the lyrics. Here are a few I just found.. produced over here.

Guess I shouldn't mention that I had the Rappers Delight record.

I used to listen to Power 99 back in the day and record a bunch of stuff off the radio. Never went anywhere without the boombox on my shoulder. Haha

World wide. Unlike the other 3 elements of hip-hop, I still think the best MC's still come from the states.

Recording off the radio use to be one of the best ways of getting music back in the day. Constantly use to have the record button pressed with the pause button, just waiting to for something new to come on so I could release pause.

Yea, they used to have some radio shows BITD that would play the new music. I'd sit and listen and record during these shows.

Too bad some jacka$$ stole all of my tapes a long time ago.
