IMO, best .22 on the market. Use good ammo though, as they tend to jam up with cheap stuff.

Well that's good to hear. They are selling it for $250.00, does that sound pretty reasonable? As for ammunition let's just say I have a guy. He can pretty much get me anything I want shortage or not. He's good friends with a gun shop owner and he gets first crack at anything we need.

I disagree -- I got my first .22 when I was 12 years old. My friend had a semi-automatic, so naturally I was not happy when my mother insisted that I get a single-shot for "safety" reasons. In retrospect, it was an excellent decision. Why? When my friend and I went out shooting or hunting for small game, I knew I had one shot, whereas he knew he had a bunch of shots. Knowing that, I became an excellent shot. He did not. There was almost nothing I couldn't hit with that thing. I remember going out squirrel hunting with some friends. They both had shotguns and I had my single-shot .22. I ended up bringing home more animals than they did. IMO, your skills improve much more with a single-shot than with a lever action or semi auto, which is why it is a good gun to start out with.

This is part of the reason I went with a single shot for my boys. It teaches you to slow down and pay attention to details....aside from that the ruger 1022 is a great rifle. It comes in several configurations.

Not always the case by the time my Dad bought me my pump 22 rifle I was already a marksman.

Attention to detail for me started with my daisy bb gun and later on with a 177 cal pellet gun.

Op what ever 22 you get him I sure he will enjoy.

They are good guns, and probably the most common 22 rifle in existance with tons of aftermarket accessories available.

The only downside I would say, is that the 10 round magazine is a rotary magazine that is fairly wide. This makes the action and stock of the gun wider and heavier than some of the other options that are single shot, or that use a single stack or tube magazine. Not a big deal for an adult, but they are a bit of a bigger gun for a kid than some other options.

I see it as a gun to aspire to. . I bought my first one with money I earned delivering papers. Sold it for 50.00 bucks a year later. Bought my second one a few years back. No regrets.

I guess I'm a little anal when it comes to guns. Newer isn't necessarily better.
Ruger is a solid gun right now, but what if another company were to buy them out.
I own several pre 60 Winchesters. They're much better rifles than the newer ones. Plus guns are a good investment for the most part.
I get what you're saying though.

Never said it was always the case.... Just that I think most young kids would be better served learning on something that isn't semi auto.

    Cripes!
Thanks to this thread I checked prices over here for Ruger 10/22: start at £500! (almost $800 USD).

OP, I would look into Marlin for a cheap rimfire. They are reliable, and so abundant that you can pick them up anywhere. Ruger 10/22 is a little overpriced for what it is.

Anyway, check out the XT if you really want a bolt action.

Or the 60/70. This is the rifle I would recommend over a 10/22 all day, especially the stainless model. A 70p was my first gun, and the rifle I always took camping. Not one problem, even with a child doing the breakdown/cleaning.
