Considering A .22 rifle For My Son

Hey gang. I am tossing around the idea of getting my son his first rifle. I'm more of a handgun guy so I could use some suggestions. I would like a model that loads a single round. Any suggestions?

Crickett has single-shot .22 rifles that are pretty popular. I haven't shot one, but my brother-in-law bought one for his kids and he speaks highly of it.

I would consider a Henry lever action. I know it's not a single shot, but they're safe, and it's something he can use for a lifetime.

I been trapping since the 70's, almost always toted a 22 around, it works and would be great for a beginner, however, a 17 hmr would be a way better choice.

Any reason for single shot? Just wondering.

You can always get any type of bolt action 22, so you can have the option of single shot, or you can load the magazine if you wish.

You can go with basic Savage or Remington. Or you can go with high-end competition 22 LR as well. Lots of option.

Whichever brand you pick, your son will have a blast shooting! You and him at the shooting range will create MEMORIES!

I bought a Rossi single shot .22 a few years back. It also came with a 20ga barrel. It is a youth gun, but I also like plinking with it. It was fairly inexpensive.

I would echo sotex Henry lever action are pretty neat rifles that would grow with him and are fun plinkers. Savage makes a nice bolt action as does CZ. A ruger 10/22 could work just get multiple rotary mags and load a single cartridge in each. He would insert the mag work the bolt shoot and repeat and also would be a gun to grow int to. when I first started hunting I had a remington 1100 20 gauge, which is a semi auto shotgun, but my dad made a longer plug out of doll rod so it would only hold a single shell. It did wonders for learning to make the first one count. Although I did get to the point where I could reload the single shot about as fast as a semi auto .

I had a 22 rifle when I was a kid. I don't remember the make, but it looked sort of like an M-1 carbine. I've got lots of fond memories of rabbit hunting with my older brothers!

That's actually a pretty good idea.

Are most of the rifles being suggested reasonably inexpensive? I would like to keep it under $200.00 if possible.

The savage bolt actions are around there, as are 10/22s this time of year, The CZ is a higher end bolt action and retails around 500. Check the adds for the locals stores. Im sure you have farming stores around you in IA, they will likely have pretty competative prices without any special sales going on. They are consistently cheaper than the big name sporting goods stores. Better start scrounging up ammo when you can 22lr has been slim pickins for a long time around me.....

A 22 is a great first gun, but the downside is that there is a major 22 ammo shortage right now. The ammo is expensive if you can even find it. You might be better off getting a single shot rifle in a small centerfire calibre like .223.

We have Theisens in the area and they always have ammunition when everyone else seems to be out. Hopefully that will be the case.

I wouldn't get him a single shot - no one wants to dink around loading after every shot. Get him something he can keep forever - he'll remember his dad gave it to him. I like the Marlin Model 60 better than the Ruger 10/22. It just feels better in my hands and I like the tube feed. I've had one of these since I was like probably 10 years old. As long as you keep it relatively clean they are very durable. Dick's Sporting Goods (if they are in your area) has a version with a laminated stock that is pretty nice and durable. Can't beat the price.

I like single shots these days due to the fact that ammo is fcking outrageous atm. I have many semi-auto weapons, but few of them rival the old Stevens single shot .22 I inherited from my grandfather. When I take it out, it is a crowd favorite. I like to let people shoot my guns. We all do that when we go out.

I had a Stevens O/U.22/410 as a kid. I handed it down to my cousin and his son now has it.
    Very fond memories.
I like to ride my horses and shoot my guns

Actually he doesn't really play our PS3. It has been replaced with this crazy thing called going outside.

    My 2 cents.....
    CZ 452 Scout Youth. It's a 22lr for @ 300 bucks.
Accurate, comes w/ a detachable magazine with a single shot adapter. 22lr is hard to find likes other have said. 17 HMR is another good choice and the rounds are fairly common to aquire.

I looked around a bit today and came across the Ruger 10/22 which was brought up. I believe it comes with a 10 round capacity magazine. Any one else have experience with it, pros and cons?
