When you squat down to take a **** in the woods do you only go down a quarter of the way? No, because you'll get **** all over the back of your legs. You go as low as possible.

I don't think anybody said you aren't good enough. They're merely giving you constructive criticism. When it comes down to it, do you want to do ego lifts, or correct ones? Most people here aren't going to pat you on the back for doing something wrong, and you should thank them for that, because if you keep doing heavy quarter squats, you're gonna blow out your knees, or one day you'll decide to go deeper with inappropriately heavy weight, and really **** yourself up.

This is how I see it. You don't have to squat a2g...but for it to count it should be at least parallel.

nice job so far! but like everyone has stated, you need to get to parallel! what i dont get is the people saying that you went from 135 to 315 is BS?? My first run of SS i did GOMAD as i was ONLY interested in strength! i could care less what i look like but rather would be strong to defend myself and my family! i guess turning 30 did that to me.... i went from the empty bar to 375 3X5 in squats in i believer 4-5 months (have to look at my log)... granted i prolly did not need to start so low as i was always a squatter prior! the best part about putting those plates up is when people stare at you and then come up to you and say "nice weight but your prolly not hitting depth if your squatting that".... i LOVE their faces when i get under the bar, break with my hips, push my knees out and go LOWER than parellel and come up and rack the bar! i usually just wink at em.....so with that being said, it is VERY possible he could progress that much if he eats enough and isnt fascinated by this whole "i dont wanna gain any fat and wanna see my abs" phase thats been going on! to me id rather be a husky dude than some skinny weak piece of @#$% that my wife would need to defend the family in case of an emergency! hey but to each his own......

not to mention he is 25 and has only been lifting 4-5 months. as opposed to a 30 year old who has "always" done squats. he also didn't give the appearance of someone on AAS so I ruled that out right away. it's the little things

op still impressive gain in strength in both squats and bench and you did it while losing weight. very impressive. sorry if my original post sounded like I was putting you down, I've just been doing this a long time and have never encountered anyone with the story you gave. and well i'm about the most skeptical sonofab1tch you'll ever come across haha

    keep up the good work!

ATG 1RM crew checking in (see avi)

There is literally no reason at all to be happy about a squat that doesn't go past parallel, the movement is exponentially easier the higher you stop.
Current gym total 435Kg/960lbs (mock meet not an aggregate)

    Squat: 165Kg/365lbs
    Bench: 100Kg/225lbs
    Deadlift: 170Kg/375lbs

    Meet total: N/A (eventually)

some guys have big muscles in the gym and they still don't know anything of what they're doing. you can go for a long time cheating and still build muscle. i saw this guy stacking on 2 plates in bench, saw him lifting and he has no clue what's up with the bench press. it's a mystery. hmm? up, down. not sure what this big mystery is. i felt like belting out a few good reps, i stuck to my own ****.

I agree with this. You have to at least be hitting parallel but not everyone should be going a2g. Until you hit parallel u should not be counting it as a squat but the whole a2g thing is overplayed on here for me. Sure the deeper you can go the better, but if you are butt winking and don't have the proper strength and flexibility to be going deeper than that then I would be sticking at parallel or a bit below it.

Congrats on the progress but make sure you are hitting parallel before claiming to squat 315 for reps!

Sure the deeper you can go the better, but if you are butt winking and don't have the proper strength and flexibility to be going deeper than that then I would be sticking at parallel or a bit below it.

Congrats on the progress but make sure you are hitting parallel before claiming to squat 315 for reps!
There's a distinct difference between hit depth, hips below knees, and ass to grass squats. Hips below your knee is correct depth. Parallel is not.

Maybe its just me but when I squat to parallel my hips are below my knees, or at least that's what I meant by it anyway

    OP,
go as low as you can go. That may be parallel, below, or a2g depending on your flexibility and leg length ratios. IMO you don't need to hit a certain depth to impress people if you're not competing as long as you're being safe.

While I wholeheartedly agree that lower squats are generally better squats, ROM is something that may have to be worked on. So while you just worry about hitting your own depth limits, also try to work towards a deeper squat through stretching and foam rolling.

    1. I used to workout a lot, so I wasn't starting from scratch.
    2. I probably could have done more than 135x5 my first week, but I was skerred of doms.
    3. I can only do 315x2 now, which is a far cry from 315x5.

But my point is that it's not crazy talk. My true 1RM in July was probably about 185 and I got up to a 315 1RM in about 10 weeks.
You also weigh 40 more pounds than OP.

True, but I'm also over 6'2". Based on OP's pics, it's not like he's a stick figure. If he's around 5'10 we probably have similar builds.

Not that any of this matters, I'm just playing devil's advocate and saying it's not totally farfetched. Plus we know that he's probably not breaking parallel.
