Nothing crazy, I'd say 35 to 40 degrees at the most. It was really icy though, so as soon as he started glissading he was out of control (at least that's what I believe).

This photo of Big Bend at first glance looks reminiscent of Zion National Park, but it isn't! Big Bend is the largest most uninhabited national park in the US. It's larger than Rhode Island and hugs the Rio Grande, the natural border between US and Mexico.

I saw some cool views. I also saw a Mountain Lion on the trail which made us decide to go back and go on another trail lol.

There were low clouds up and down the trail.

    Some more photos.

We decided to go to a trail on the Rio Grande towards the Hot Spring. I got to say that it being deep in a canyon, the fact that rain was coming and going, and it was late in the afternoon made it somewhat eerie. Not to mention it being desolate.

Apparently it used to be a small town/resort on the Rio Grande. We found the hot spring. It was warm, around 95F right on the river!

We also saw a Mexican family there with their kids. My girl is fluent in Spanish but wouldn't eavesdrop for me lol. She spoke a little with them. We weren't sure if they were Americans or Mexican. One spoke English to me though. if you crossed just 30 - 40 feet across the Rio Grande you'd be in Mexico.

Next time I go to Big Bend I will be sure to go to Boquilles, Mexico though since it's just a small boat ride across the river. All in all great time!

    Upper Lena Lake

Picked up my first wilderness permit last month and made it to Upper Lena Lake for the night. 3900' gain in 7 miles, most of it in the last half, this was the butt kicker, but worth it.

    Lunch Lake

...so this weekend I ambitiously thought I would complete the High Divide loop in 2 days... but was perfectly happy just to stay overnight at Seven Lakes Basin, then come home lol. Not as steep as Upper Lena, but put another wilderness permit to use. Trail starts in a rain forest, you have to cross a boulder field, I got to see (a peek) of Mount Olympus, and had a deer just stroll by my camp like I was nothing.

WTA reads brutal, Upper Lena had some on all 4 scrambles and I had a few good slips on the way down, Lake of the Angels seems more vertical than that.

You ever stop at that Hama Hama Oysters place? I either pass by too early before opening or I'm so beat I'm just trying to get home that I haven't gone in yet.

I did Upper Lena 12 years ago so I don't remember the details but this was much harder I think. I clocked Lake of the Angles at 3.6 miles with 3300' using Gaia. There were lots of little ups and downs so I'd estimate it over 3500'.
The notorious headwalls were short but steep. Only one section had dangerous exposure. Lots of mud and brush in the meadows around Pond of the False Prophets. No mosquitos.
I saw 3 groups of backpackers including one jerk with dog.

Never been to the oyster joint.

Say hello to my little friend.

I finally broke down and got one of these babies to give my husband and family some peace of mind. I tested it out last Saturday in Tahoe, and it worked beautifully.

I generally find it far more miserable

That said, EBC in winter was quite nice. It was really dry, clear skies etc

Awesome pics, guys. Care to elaborate, Bar? I'm planning to do Shasta this winter and would love to hear any tips you can offer. Sweet new piece, Barb!

Been a while since I posted, but did several climbs since.

Had the core of the Denali team out in Washington to do Glacier Peak and Rainier. Glacier was just as miserable this time as it was the first time I did it. The weather was horrible, and began raining on us about halfway up to camp. The next morning we had slightly better weather, and a training/rest day. I taught crevasse rescue and rope management, before we went to bed at about 7pm. The winds had started picking up, and that was my main concern through the night. But when we woke up, I couldn't even see the tent next to ours, we were in a sheer whiteout. We went back to bed for an hour but the conditions remained. I woke up every hour until 5am when we realized we no longer had a window and unfortunately had to bail. In the end, we still did almost 30 miles and we weren't even on the mountain. It also rained on us the entire way down, we were extremely miserable lol.

The next climb we planned was Rainier, but after going to the ranger station a couple days after Glacier, we saw the latest forecast and it was horrible. Extremely high winds and snow quite low. After some discussion, we decided to do Mt. Baker instead. Last year, I had summited Baker with my girlfriend the same weekend, so we were comfortable with the decision. I almost didn't stop at the ranger station since Baker's permit system is virtually non-existent and I knew the route (Coleman-Deming Glacier). Thankfully we did because the ranger told us that the main snow bridge on the CD at about 9k had collapsed, making the route completely impassable. No one was going up it. We decided to go up the standard route, the Easton Glacier, which was on the other side of the mountain. A two hour drive later and we arrived at the trailhead, with pretty overcast skies.

We got up to camp late and in a bad whiteout, with zero view of the route ahead. We woke up to good weather but still whiteout, and decided to proceed. We climbed through the night and eventually punched through the primary cloud layer. The first two pics below are at about 9k feet, our first views of blue skies. The next are on the summit. On the way down we got pounded by rain and arrived back at the car soaked again.

I organized and led the second reunion climb for my Army unit, climbing Mt. Adams. We only had five this year (seven last year) but it was an awesome time and two of the guys hadn't made the trip last year. We had great weather and the climb was very smooth.

My girlfriend and I returned to Washington to climb the Emmons on Rainier, but poor route conditions and poor weather caused us to bail. I've now been on the Emmons twice (with another planned climb) and haven't been able to summit. Next year.

Hope everyone is doing well. I don't have any more climbs planned unfortunately, but I'll start looking to plan some backpacking trips.

Finally getting a little bit of time to chat about my last adventures, not sure where I got up to so I'll work backwords.

Finished our trip by exploring El Calafate and Torres del Paine in Winter. We wanted to do the W trek but now you must have a guide during winter and the minimum cost went up to 1200USD per person for 5 nights which is way above our budget, so enjoy our day hike pics of Torres del Paine. We also went kayaking next to Perito Moreno glacier near El Calafate, turns out it snowed the entire time, we had 100km/h winds and only kayaked for half an hour before three of the other kayaks capsized and we had to go back in.

I'm also now selling photography prints and hoping people will keep following me on instagram, if you want a print of anything message me here and I can get you a pretty decent quote, also follow me on instagram @theuntamedtrail ;also what is everyone elses handles, I feel like this was mentioned years ago and I completely missed it

Puerto natales, the town before Torres del Paine

Guancope looking at the towers from a distance

The girlfriend casually looking at the base of the towers

Me looking at the towers - clearly a much better photo

Absolute mirror on the lake back, one of three times our guide has ever seen it that still

A puma just waiting to see what the Guancope would do

Doesn't do the size justice, but the vertical walls of the glacier are over 70m (220ft) high

Quick question: What's a good all purpose pair of boots that you would recommend?

I'm going to be living hotel to hotel in every state soon for work, and I have to pack light. I was hoping to find a pair of boots that I can wear every day and also use for hiking regardless of weather. I'm not sure how realistic that is though. Thanks

    Price isn't an issue.

I got dis in mens. They are great during the summer particularly on like hikes with a fairly good size pack. Winter they work great too- crampon compatible and warm. Make sure you get the right size and not too big that is the only issue I have ran into. These might not be great if you are looking for something that is strictly day hikes. Might be too heavy for every day use too actually... but this brand is solid imo.

I need to dig through my phone and post some of the hikes i've been doing here in Hawaii. Been through most of the more popular hikes here; still trying to get the time to do Stairway to Heaven. I know i few who have done it; they say the views are amazing but i dont want to risk getting a thousand dollar fine since hikers are technically trespassing

Screw them. The worst part of that story is their CEO's "woe is me" response that its not their fault that more goes on behind closed doors than you think and lawsuits are a last resort. They've sued and forced so many businesses to either shut down or change their name through litigation it is insane. I hope they go under.

I have been hardcore rock climbing and bouldering for about 4 months now, absolutely engrossed with it.

I find it a lot more satisfying training and climbing than doing 3 hours of stair climbing and hours of running etc to train for a big mountain which I don't get to climb for 6 months.

Not doing Aconcagua this year, not sure if I will even have the desire to do it next year but we will see. Just really trying to level up my climbing grades.

Some amazing pics ITT. What do ya'll use to shoot? I just picked up a GoPro Hero 7 Black. I'm in the photo market now that I'm selling my T3i to my brother, but I'd like something smaller than a DSLR.

I do have an iPhone XS Max which takes great photos but sometimes it's a pain to deal with.

Look in to mirrorless cameras, I'm shooting with the Olympus OMD-E1 now after upgrading from the E5 and it's amazing, massive single frame resolution, shoots in 4k video and is weather resistant. But honestly unless you are super intent on taking photos I would just buy a better phone with a good camera. It's a lot of extra weight, time to set up and I've been in a quite a few spots were I just can't be bothered to get my camera out.

Mirrorless is the way to go. Sony is killing it in that area right now. I have the A7III and it's awesome. Great at both video and photo. Look into the Sony A6000 series. Super small and light but produces great photos
