    the weekend was mostly a bust. the abs were sore, and a lot of surgery soreness as well, so I chilled out and did a lot of thinking. hard to know what my fitness plans are now that I have a third hernia. I will keep on with slow weight loss and slow strength gain I guess, but I know now there is an invisible ceiling coming up with regards to the hernia. it will do something at some point, I still have to mow the grass, even though I know there's a landmine out there. I want to enjoy my summer before I push for more surgery, but this is going to put a cloud on my summer regardless. Did some stuff at home on Sunday.

    Sorry for the absence. I started to feel uncomfortable working out without a coach while I have a hernia, so I consulted a fitness Clinic in my city and the general advice is no squatting or deadlifting or direct ab work. Which I will comply with, but it now lights a fire on me to be proactive on its repair. So I will give my surgeon a few weeks to let the dust settle then push for another appt so we can plan the date.

    I guess it’s upper body work and machines for the lower body for a while.

    Hey, sorry for the absence. I worked out a few more times last week, then went up to a friend's cabin for the long weekend (this time of year, we get 2 long weekends in a row). So the weekend was pretty relaxing and non-internet. But I will catch up on the logging.

    OK, I had plans after work, so the idea was to go to the gym at lunch and stay slightly longer than my lunch break and see if that slips by. ****, its a short week, and half of us are on vacation.

    I'm like, well ok, I definitely cant go over my 30 min lunch break now, but I can power through this, check my phone... its already been 26 minutes FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

    I left my desk at 12:30, signed in at 12:32, changed out, did half of the sets on my first exercise and its already 26 minutes in... so I abort, put away the weights, change out, go back to my desk, my ass is covered. But I swear he never talks to me when I go to the gym after 4 pm, and he never rousts anyone else in the gym, he has this intense hardon to get me in trouble, he walks right up to me, harasses me then takes off. And you may think tattling on someone for taking a longer than 30 min lunch break seems petty, but I have worked with this guy for 7 years, he is a total scumbag and our management are these reptilian dicks these days and already don't like me.

    Yeah I need to find another job for sure, this cant head anywhere positive.

    Maybe I should go at lunch more often and he will get bored? idk, he has only cornered me twice in 3 months, but I have only been to the gym before close of business twice in 3 months, so its been every time.

    And once I was back at my desk, someone tried to phone scam me, claiming I owed the govt 5000 dollars in taxes or some crap. The story was total garbage, but I was actually transferred there from a legit govt tax office. I got this goofy call, I hang up on them, call the real Canadian version of IRS, ask them about this phone #, and like a f'ing moron, they instead dial up the number and forward me there! So I thought I was on the line with the REAL tax people, but the way they were talking was bizarre so I check the number and it was the same idiots from before so I hung up and called the police to report these wankers.


    So the office has a gym that anyone but me can use without being harassed (there were 4 other people in the gym that day, and the signin book clearly indicated they were all there longer than 30 min), and then scammers are trying to get me. I LOVE IT

    OK, I took that second, much-needed, long weekend. partied a lot, drinks, patios, sun, fast food. it was all terribly irresponsible. but I kind of wanted this part of the summer before I start hounding the surgeon to set a date. For all I know, I could be under the knife in a few weeks and potentially lose the rest of the summer. Who knows? So I took this month to enjoy myself, and no regrets. But that isn't bb.com log-worthy, so its time to go back to the gym.

    notes: up until this point, the weight was moving really well, I was using my legs, and everything was clicking. But during the set with 160, I felt an aching sensation in my surgery mesh in my groin when I unracked it. And each rep I kept feeling that ache where they implanted the mesh. So I stopped the set and had to decide what was next.

    The general rule is, if it hurts the hernia areas then stop. My best guess is that me squeezing my butt and tensing the legs put pressure on the mesh. What I had left in the workout was a few more sets of straight bench press, about 8 sets of closegrip bench press, and some flys. All of which involved lying on my back in that same position. I hate stopping a workout mid workout, but it seemed like the safe option. Health first. I went to the bike to see if doing that hurt.

    The bike didn't hurt, so I did that then went home. Fairly disappointed in all of this, as it had been going so well. I seriously hope this isn't a sign of me not being able to bench comp-style and having to stick to a bb style.

    Sunday was sort of a bust. I have been having a burning sensation in my LEFT hernia (the new one that still needs surgery), so I have been mostly lying down, even though lying down makes it worse initially, then eventually it calms down.

    So it might be getting worse. Have been weighing my doctors options today. My thought is if I go to the ER and its not life threatening then I spend 8 hours in the ER with nothing to show for it. But if its just "discomfort", and I make it to the regular mediclinic hours tomorrow, I can still get the process started to try and push for a surgery date.

    Small plus today: lats and quads are mildly sore, so the workout was effective.

    July 8 - Road to Second Surgery

    Woke up Monday with a bit of a pressure feeling in the nuts. So... headed to the doctor to check out if the hernia got worse. The mediclinic was insane, they have maybe 15 locations in the city and they were all packed to the gills. Finally, one miraculously was empty around 1 pm (you can track wait times online), so I headed there.

    Sadly, the doctor there seems to still think I have an STD... I was annoyed, but swallowed it. I don't want her to write "difficult" on my "chart". I convinced her to still put in for a surgical consult, but I think she only put it in as Routine, so I prob wont hear from them for months.

    So, decision time. I suspect the hernia got a bit worse, so I am going to pull back a bit on the types of workouts I do, mostly machines and cardio now. And I am going to troll the ER every weekend and try to get an on the spot ultrasound and quickfast surgical consult out of them. I learned last year that if you don't pester them, it wont happen. I don't subscribe to the theory that you wait until the hernia is killing you before you operate.

    I ran into this a lot last year, a man over 40 shows up with pain in his testicles and doctors just assume its a sexually transmitted infection. apparently the most common cause of pain in the testes in men over 40 is an STI from unprotected anal.

    the ER doctors were so clumsy with it too, I am sitting there in the ER at 1 in the morning, and theyre asking

    "have you had sex recently?"

    "no, not for at least a month before the pain started"

    Having given this a fair bit of thought, I am going to retire this journal. It has morphed from a workout journal to a grotesque spectacle of the reasons why I cant work out.

    Most days now there is a lot of discomfort, regardless of machine or freeweight, so I don't bother going. The best I can figure right now is do some cardio and keep a good diet so that I can drop weight before the surgery. I meet with a surgeon on Monday to try and lock down the best date possible.

    Thanks to those who kept checking in from the salad days to now, I am wondering if the best thing I can do now is start up a new journal once I am recovering from surgery. The original ideas behind this journal do not apply, there is no chasing numbers, and there is no passion, it will be more a patient rebuild.

    Hello all!

    So, I guess this second surgery was easier but harder.

    With the first surgery it hurt a lot, and was a harder operation and a harder recovery. But I was fired up and hit the gym hard and did my thing. I kept it light, worked my way up slowly, but still hadn't even hit 50% TM before I was diagnosed with another hernia. And that sort of took the wind out of my sails, I began to seriously doubt my future in the gym. Motivation tanked a lot. So I took it easy in the summer, and had the second surgery on Halloween,

    The surgery was real easy, the first was not an outpatient surgery, but the second was, I tapdanced my way out of there (thanks to Morphine). I still had nerve pain from the first surgery, but I could tell the second surgery was just the textbook healing: heal around the mesh and heal the incision, which is a cakewalk. But I really wasn't fired up to go to the gym. I waited my 6 weeks, but the incision was still leaking, so I gave it more time. And this is the week I return.

    Over a year and a half of erratic training has put some extra layers of flab on me, and I don't feel like I have any energy or power or stamina, so I gotta start in the kitchen and do light gym until I build up a bit.

    Last week I cut my caffeine by like 90%, cut carbs on the weekend - not to zero but I dropped them like a half and will wait to see how it goes. I am fixing some sleep issues, I can sleep on my side and in my bed again. I am a mess, but I will crawl back out of my pit and see the sun again. Its not an ambitious workout journal yet, but it is a real one.

    Made a deal with the owner of the café in the building where I work. For lunch they are willing to make me 2 eggs and 3 pieces of bacon for 3 bucks. So theres a cheap lunch and I wont have to prep and pack a lunch (lazy), I will just need to make sure I get my veggies in during the evening, maybe slide some Greens into my bfast shake.

    After work I was fairly exhausted but I dug the trx out of storage and did some bodyweight rows, some calf raises, some bw squats and pushups until I got tired. Humble start but its somewhere.
