    Life Advice

Hey guys looking for some life advice..

Up to this point I have lived a fairly successful life. I graduated university with a degree in Economics, and found a job I really enjoy in Real Estate Development. I finished my pilots licence and found a really nice girl friend. My girlfriend just moved 2.5 hours away for school and my companies future isn't looking the brightest (risky investment not getting the needed finance).
At this time, i feel like it would be a perfect time to travel to Australia and work abroad for 6 months. Currently I do not have a job lined up, however I think I could find a job fairly easily with the rate I am asking. The main reason I want to move is to party, kiteboard, and extend summer.

I am 25 and my parents think this would be a step backwards and maybe just consider a vacation for a few weeks. A lot of my friends have experienced travelling, and I worry that if I find a new job, i will no longer be able to travel freely compared to the opportunity now.

Can any of you provide some life advice if you were in my position. I should add, getting a job when I return home isn't certain. I will have about 10k saved up by December, no mortgage, and no debt.

OP, I've got the perfect solution!

You stay put and focus on your career. I'll go to Australia for you in December, and send you emails detailing my experiences.

I could probably make the 10k last at least 2 months but could stay longer if you send more money. I have very specific accommodation requirements.

LMK when you want me to go.

When I was in my 20's a friend of mine quit his job and was sure it would be easy to find something else. It wasn't and that's always made me ultra-cautious about making assumptions like that.
There will come a day when I tire of listening to 80's music. That day is not today.

When I was your age I too agonised over difficult life decisions like this one. Should I continue with tertiary education and follow the conventional but safe route to becoming a successful and wealthy professional? Or should I follow my heart, and tour the world with my one-man show that combined rock opera with pottery-throwing in the heart-rendingly beautiful tale of "Tommy the Sad Bowl-Maker"?

Fortunately at around that time I discovered crack, which provided me with a unique insight into the municipal politics of Canada, and I have flourished ever since.

Or medical advice. It's always a good idea to ask strangers about medical conditions instead of seeing a doctor.

My two cents....(take it FWIW, I am very old-school)

You are 25, and you still want to focus on the party? Did you not get enough of that in college?
There comes a time in life where we have to move forward, and I gotta say-I'm with your parents on this one.

Just a little food for thought:

In 1969 when the U.S (our parents generation) sent Aldrin and Armstrong to the moon (+ Michael Collins), most of the men in Mission Control
were fresh out of college, most with engineering degrees, and loads of common sense. During the descent to the lunar surface,
Armstrong and Aldrin experience two "Program Alarms", basically computer overloads which NASA worried greatly about, as they'd
never been experienced in any missions...and they happened during highly stressed moments as the astronauts were about
to land for the first time on the lunar surface. The whole world was watching.

The call to "go-no-go" fell on the shoulders of a young Guidance Controller named Steve Bales who's head was screaming with
calculations-he had the world on his shoulders and he literally had to make the decision whether or not to abort the landing, and
he made the decision in a couple of seconds based on knowledge and calculated risk.

His decision became legendary at NASA.

    He was 25.
"Common sense is not so common".

Do you own your home outright or are you indicating you live with your parents still?

If you are still living at home he the trip should be a low priority.

Unless you already have a "passion" for something you want to turn into a way to make a living, and you're ready to take the risks to start that business now, go for the trip to Australia. You have your degree, and you can always be someone's employee. Also, you sound a bit immature in the sense that you're not prepared to face life's realities. So, go be who you are until you start to grow up some more.

What are "life's realities?" Well, thats' for you to figure out. For me, it's when I realized that all my time up until I had a Family was spent learning how to take care of myself well enough to be able to take care of others. In other words, I had taken from my experiences enough to know how to survive/thrive on my own to the point where I could shoulder the load of raising the next generation to do the same...my children. Life was no longer about ME; it was about them and how I could do my best to raise tremendous, self sufficient human beings.

I may seem like I'm speaking a foreign language to you right now, and that's fine. Go to Australia. Have some adventures. Grow the fk up.

    He was 25.

I love this story ^^. Thanks for sharing..

    OP –
In the beginning of the Iraq war, a young Apache pilot led a daring mission to rescue a two downed Kiowa pilots behind enemy lines just outside of Baghdad.

The Apache pilot basically gave up his seat (Apaches are two seater) so he hoisted the first injured pilot into the helicopter front seat. He then strapped the second injured pilot to the left exterior of the gunship, and finally he strapped himself to the right exterior.

The Apache flew back to safety 15 miles away with 4 soldiers – two inside and two outside.

This is such a dangerous thing to do that the Army flight school does not even exercise it during training. They only talk about it.

The pilot was a good friend of mine. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery.

I will let you guess how old he was.

here's my take on this nonsense:

you major in Economics, most likely, on your parent's dime....then, you reward them by working Real Estate, which you could have done straight from HS, without running up a huge college bill....

now, after that, you want to go to Australia to party and fly kites......okay, kiteBOARD..whatever......

Ditching the girl friend, obviously, along the way.......

easy to figure you out: live for the moment....fine, if that's what you want, then live for the moment...don't plan a inch ahead in your life.....

I will have about 10k saved up by December, no mortgage, and no debt.
let me tell you what I read in this baby..
    you got your degree
    got a job
    got a hot girlfriend
life was fine and dandy andy
but then reality set in as it often does
the job became less than perfect with unknown future
your girl decided she needed to go off and finish college because it was important to her
so now instead of looking for better job

you wanna run off somewhere half way across world and just forget about your life for awhile

just remember whether a vacation lasts a week or a month or six
eventually you will have to come back down and face the reality you leave behind ya
