PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE POSTING
+Welcome to the fifth installment of the Misc. Wristwatch Crew, the thread to discuss watches, horology, watchmaking and closely related luxury products.
+Many believe there is nothing more to watches than looks, but as you will find in this thread - that could not be farther from the truth.
THREAD RULES
+Don't post fashion watches or watches with little or no horological value (Micheal Kors, Diesel, Armani, Fossil etc)
+Don't bump this thread, there are many subscribers, your post is not invisible - it's probably just not interesting.
+Don't quote posts with lots of images
+Don't ask vague questions, such as "I'm looking for a watch under $500, any suggestions?"
+Don't post or discuss counterfeit watches
You may be negged for breaking these rules. Spamming or very aggressive behavior will be reported. Our crew is home to a lot of high rep members!
Watch Buying Advice:
If you're looking to buy used, a lot of the guys in the MWWC can help you
Buying used saves you money, and this way the watch (generally) doesn't lose any value after your purchase (meaning you can always sell it again for the same price or more). It's a good way to discover your tastes when just getting into the game.

Watch lads, help me out if you please. Reps for answers of course.
I'm looking for a watch that, while still aesthetic, is practical. I go into the mountains a lot, and over the next 6 months I'll probably be spending a bit of time back-country skiing in a couple of different countries. So I'm chasing something that is:
-preferably analog
-must have a compass
-an altimeter would be nice too
-less than $500

Well the previous thread closed as I posted the Rolex Presidential that I picked up yesterday. So here it is again, my new baby.
BRB, 25 years old and the proud owner of a Rolex Presidential. Just picked it up as I got off work yesterday.
Its model number: 118238 and it is certified and appraised for 19,500. I have a friend who owns a Jewlery store and he sold it to me for 12k.Traditional Wet Shaving Crew

Whats the point in owning a speedmaster. It looks just like any cheap $5 watch you can get from the mall, waste of money imo

In on epic thread. +1 on the Seiko 007 as one of the best under 500. Awesome watch. I have one as my daily wearer, here it is on a 'Bond' NATO, super comfy.
Just ordered a Steinhart Nav B-Uhr 44 Handwinding, can't wait. The the display back gave it a +1 over the Laco, despite the 'historical value' it has over the Steinhart. But still, can't go wrong for what you get at the price.

Since you are going to go skiing I'd suggest to add 10 atm waterproof to that list, in fact with the general purpose of that watch that is probably a must. But perhaps you should consider just going for a digital watch if you want those functions. On an analog watch it is way harder to keep all functions in a easy to read manner without ending with something like this.
Sure you can fit a compass on a watch nicely, but anything more and it becomes a royal cluster**** when somehow a chronograph, date and 15 timezone function tends to be added. Nice and simple though:
Plenty of these watches have turn open cases with compass other functions hidden inside, which is an option but if you are gonna be doing effort to need to see your compass anyways why not buy a better watch and a standalone compass?
Perhaps try looking for a vintage watch, even some omega's are in your budget in that range.★☆★★☆ tmiscplace2 crew ★☆★★☆

@ kert and neo, i've been looking at vintage omegas but it is a truly tough market because there is so many fakes out there.. but that is definitely a possibility of something i might own
do you guys think itd be weird to buy a 10 years old used watch thats in like prime condition just to save on cost?
cant see myself spending a few grand on a watch
