    Glad I found this log!

Spent the last few days going through my forever book to figure out what changes to make. Ended up with the attached portal leader and FSL anchor

I saw that you're trying 5x5 @ FSL... It sounded like madness to me. Did you bail on that idea or are you still rolling with it?

I'm having a hard time figuring out how you're running it currently. Need to read more of your notes I guess.

I'm being lazy and not doing much lower body right now, and the upper I'm doing is more intensity and volume than 5x5 FSL.

I've done 5x5 FSL before. It's pretty good. With the right training max it shouldn't be a problem.

I used to do the main sets, with the PR set (as an AMRAP) every time, sometimes jokers, a first set last widowmaker, and then 5x10 BBB. UPPER BODY ONLY LOL

    While cutting.

But for lower, the most aggressive I got was 5x5 Second Set Last, which ended up being too much, the 5x5 supplemental ended up being equal to what I'd use for a 5x5 volume day on Texas Method...but done after the main sets...no thanks.

I've never done a 5/3/1 template that had a full body thing going like that one. Looks good for frequency though

The portals template has you do a 5x5 @ last set weight which I'm hoping will help re-acclimate me to doing more of my work sets at a higher intensity which I'm hoping will help me drive a higher TM before I need to reset. Not sure it will work out in practice in a deficit though.

531 is cool like that though with so much variation to it.

Nothing really as it turns out.

Following the upper body main lifts stuff from nsuns 5 day that's based on 5/3/1 (loosely) and whatever my lazy ass actually does for lower body. Today's Deadlift was technically a 3x3 with 'PR set' at the top done instead of the upper body assistance stuff from nsuns

Looks fun. Hella volume on the press/row.

It looks vaguely like spinal tap from 531 but I'm not sure if it actually does as I only skimmed that part.

    45x20 / BWx1
    95x10 / BWx1
    135x5 / BWx1

    175x5 / BWx2
    195x3 / BWx3
    225x7 / BWx3

    205x3 / BWx3
    195x5 / BWx3
    185x3 / BWx3
    175x5 / BWx3
    BW x 5

    AM bodyweight like 207.

I think that maybe my shoulders are telling me this combination of frequency, intensity, and volume is enough and I don't need to do all the rest.

Probably what I should do when I get back next week is something more...basic and simple and balanced.

    Squat
    Squat FSL 5x5

    Bench chins
    CGBP chins
    LTE / Curls

    Deadlift
    Trap bar deads

    Press DB row
    Press DB row
    Stuff
We will never know if we overreacted and did too much. We most certainly will know if we did too little.

So I'm still here. Not lifting. The missing weeks accounted for as follows

1: Canoe camping trip with dad and brother way up in northern Minnesota, in the boundary waters canoe area wilderness. Took two canoes and gear across four lakes and three portages (carry all your **** including canoe across land to next lake) and stayed 3 nights.

2: Travel for the 4th, out of state, big party and family thing

3: Busy with new-to-me vehicle acquisition. Not a big deal

4: Dealing with big IRL stuff that I really didn't ever think would be a thing I'd have to deal with that I don't know how to deal with that I'm not going to talk about on bb.com or to anybody I haven't already talked to about it so please don't ask I know I'm mentioning it and saying don't ask but it is what it is. I'll just say that it's in the parenting realm and sucks

So the new thing. Our older doge, german shepherd, turned 10 a few weeks ago. I'll make short. He had an eye thing, then when boarding while we were on vacation they were checking out an eye thing he had but couldn't find anything wrong in the eye itself so they did xrays of torso etc, thought he had a mass on his liver/spleen which could have been a really bad thing, like suddenly bleed out and die, so they scheduled an ultrasound for later that day or the next, couldn't get to it till the next day we were ready to cut the vacation short after being gone 1 day to come back but ultrasound was good so we stayed. Picked him up when we got back with a referral to an ophthalmologist.

Ophthalmologist does an ultrasound of the eye (guess that's a thing) and says detached retina, blind in that eye, give these and these drops, recheck in 3 weeks, call if anything at all starts to be weird with the other eye, but otherwise not a big deal.

Then a couple days ago his hips/arthritis are acting up notably, yesterday morning he has a really hard time going up a 3-stairs flight of stairs, barely makes it, so I call vet for an appointment that afternoon, by which time he can't walk.

So last night/today/now he can't even stand under his own power, after helping him up. His front legs will hold most of his bodyweight but his back is nearly useless and his back left leg is particularly useless. So he lies on the floor and sometimes whines. Eats and drinks, carry him outside to go to the bathroom (except when it was inside once so far). He's on a beefcake dose of an oral dat dere celltech as of this morning. IF it's going to improve his condition, at least the symptoms, it will take 1-3 or even 4 days to work. Today is day 1.

Still no idea what it is. Could have opted, yesterday, to go really aggressive with diagnostic but that wouldn't be fun and mostly if they found something that the steroids won't help, it's something that can't be helped anyway, not in a geriatric dog.

So we're doing the steroids and hoping that sometime in the next few days the symptoms at least improve and he can stand and walk, because if he can't do that...

Could be a herniated disc, but not likely. Could be a brain tumor. Could be a spine tumor. Could be some thing with the insulation or whatever around the nerves. Could be other things.

But right now I'm picking him up and carrying outside to go to the bathroom and he whined like every hour last night so I woke up and pet him and tried to go back to sleep. Can't really tell if he whines because he's frustrated he can't get up (proably mostly that), he's hungry, he's thirsty, he has to piss, something hurts (I don't think it hurts though, we're actually pretty sure of that).

Okay so I didn't make that short.

I know everybody's dog is great, but, he's the greatest dog that ever dogged. The kids grew up with, crawling on, jumping on, him, and he's been nothing but perfect, rarely even bumped into them and knocked them over by accident.

I really hope these steroids get him mobile again, at least for awhile.

Also, school started back on Monday, so in theory I can get on a consistent lifting schedule easily again, I just did some squats on Monday, 3x5 225, was going to do upper yesterday, work back up...but I don't want to be sore (my thighs are embarrassingly sore from the squats) when picking up and carrying him around. I'll tell ya, having strength is useful for carefully, safely, with control, picking up a 100 lb non-mobile dog off the floor

Doge isn't going to make it. Still trying to diagnose why he's lame in back legs, just MRI left, already found a big likely cancerous mass in right shoulder, nodes in lungs, nodes in liver, something with his spi e around t12 t13, lower red cell count, but no explanation for detached reti a or lameness yet.

I was pretty sure as of last night this would be his last day. At university vet hospital with all the everything

He was just going up and down multiple flights of stairs last week. But he turned 10 two weeks ago and that's median GSD lifespan.

He is such a damn good dog.

Hey Farley. I’m sorry to hear about your dog. I know it must be a tough time for you and the family and my heart and thoughts go out to you all.

I had a question if you don’t mind about setting up accessory work with 5/3/1. I’m thinking of running BBS for my Bench and press then FSL for my squat and deadlift.

With BBS the assistance for push is 50 reps total, pull 50 reps total, and single leg/core 50 reps total. On my FSL days it’s push 50-100 reps, pull 50-100 reps, single leg/core 50-100 reps. Jim has you hitting push/pull/single leg or core on each training day, which would be 4 days for me.

I’m having a hard time piecing together the assistance work to have a proper balance while not over doing it, along with potentially effecting recovery. I’m currently running Fierce 5 U/L and love the balance it has so trying to set something similar up is ideal if I run 531 again.

Thanks boss for any informative input.

Did you get that setup anywhere in particular? Could be fine, but my guess would be that a recommendation would probably be to do BBS for only one of the upper lifts, and FSL for the other, ditto lower body.

Maybe I'm just a lazy SOB who does whatever he wants regardless of the program these days, but I just wouldn't do single leg or core stuff on the upper days...and I wouldn't hesitate to reduce or drop the assistance pressing stuff and just do pulls there if I was gassed or felt like I was past the point of 'that's enough'. I don't think any of us has ever suffered from not doing enough upper body pressing 'stuff'

For both upper or both lower lifts it may be. Or maybe not. Only one way to find out but I'd be wary

Last week Wed I squat 3x5 w/250. Friday benched 3x5 w/185 and BW Chins 3x5. Today squat 3x5 w/255. Will get lifting consistently again now as summer rolls to an end and school is back in session.

Post workout and dinner bodyweight 207, been 207-209 most times I get on the scale. Diet has been crap with no exercise or training the last couple months.

Got a mini fridge to help spruce up the lifting space

We will never know if we overreacted and did too much. We most certainly will know if we did too little.

Squat 315x3. Not maximal, but saw some faint stars
