Anyone playing Star Citizen?

There used to be an active thread about it. Thinking about trying it out - some of the ships are really damn expensive, considering this is just a game. Seems like it might be a p2w game that you also need to buy. Anyone have more info on the game in general?

You know it's in alpha right, and not a complete game? It'll be released more like next year around Christmas (probably).

yes but i know people are buying/selling tons of ships, and im sure there is a lot of chatter on the forums and people who have done tons of info gathering... im sure the economic system is at least outlined

yeah, from what i understand theres a mini-economy based around the buying and selling of ships.. sort of genius, theyve made a lot of limited edition ships for a game that hasnt even been released yet and made an insane amount of money off of it.. im at a loss as to what will be most viable.. will the game be a gank fest? should speed be favored? or durability? i tend to go off and do my own thing so ill need something i can run solo with and evade people... i want to buy something to try it out but i dont wanna spend 100ish dollars and be locked into something thats horrible

Was interested until I saw how much some people are throwing into this, $1000s on ships for a game that isn't out yet; I want to like it and play it but kind of worried it will be so much pay to win that you wont have a chance without dropping a few paychecks into it.

yeah it definitely seems like it might be p2w... it wont be any fun if there are people with 1500 dollar ships cruising around, toasting everyone whos in a standard 100 dollar model

When you consider how much cash they've raised/spent and compare SC to a game like Elite: Dangerous which has a fraction of the budget yet is far more competent and compelling, I'm beginning to think Star Citizen won't ever amount to anything.

This. Nor is it in a terrible state. There are big bugs every now and then, but that's to be expected once inviting new elements to the alpha.

The guy running it has directed high quality movies as well as the wing commander series and other games, he isnt really a nobody so thats why there is such a backing behind it. Also, when the game is released you wont be able to buy ships with money, you can now because its to help fund while its in development & thats just a perk to donating at the moment.

he also did a great job with freelancer... freelancer was a beautiful game, and the way i found out about SC was i was looking for a game like freelancer, except more in depth... this is basically an MMO version of freelancer with a lot more you can do... it was ahead of its time in 2000

pretty much this, it sounds like it could be amazing but with all the money people have tied up in it... I am also done paying to play alphas and betas, nothing ruins a game more then investing way to much time into something to have all you have achieved erased time and time again..

you can play some parts of the game now.. its in alpha... in the end no matter what online game you play, if there is tradable currency its always pay to win to an extent.

Ive seen people call it pre-alpha, but in the end, we are testing the game that is in its first stages of development and they acknowledge that, that is the definition of alpha.

it seems like you can get a basic ship for like 40-60 bucks, which includes the game license, so youre essentially figuring in buying the game... i wish there was a clue on how easy it was to upgrade to a better ship in-game

It's mostly going to be a space sim, not a combat game. Combat will be a part of it since you can be a bounty hunter/pirate etc, but you'll have tons of different options like salvage, archeology/exploration, trade, and even running a factory if you're super lucky and dedicated. It's not pay to win because they're not selling anything you can't get in game. They're trying to get as much funding as they can, which isn't much yet compared to most AAA titles.

For single player I would suggest:

if you want to fight, Hornet.

if you want to explore, Aurora.

if you want to be a pirate, Cutlass.

if you want to be a racer, M50.
