every country is different. Norway chooses the best lifters to go period. In the US you have to compete at nationals and win or everyone above decline the spot. Thats why Alex Kang got to go to open worlds last year even though he's not even close to the top 163 lifter.

Yeah, Kang was actually in my mind as I asked. I wasn't sure of the exact process, I just knew some guys were there who certainly didn't win Nationals, so I figured there had to be some other avenue to reach worlds.
    637/390tng/615 - belt/wraps, best gym lifts.
    600/370/600 - best competition lifts.
575/330/560 - best competition lifts at 181 raw.

Yea, at least in the US it goes to the weight class winners then by Wilks as long as its not more than 2 lifters in the same weight class. So I came up with this list after Raw Nationals:

    1 Ray Williams 26 Open 162.6 120+ 968.0 MS 12 529.3992
    1 Michael Tuchscherer 28 Open 118.8 120 912.5 IN 12 525.8738
    1 David Ricks -O 53 Open 91.7 93 787.5 GA 12 498.0937
    1 Alex Tertitski 34 Open 83.0 83 732.5 FL 12 488.9438
    1 Eric Kupperstein 47 Open 58.6 59 545.0 MA 12 475.0765
    1 Nick Tylutki 34 Open 102.6 105785.0 MN 12 473.0410
    1 Shawn Frasquillo 27 Open 65.3 66 582.5 TX 12 461.4565
    1 Jordan Berke 24 Open 73.0 74 615.5 FL 12 447.0992

    2 Blaine Sumner 26 Open 162.5 120+ 937.5 OK 9 512.7187
    2 Jared Martin 24 Open 117.7 120855.0 IN 9 493.8480
    2 LS McClain 34 Open 92.5 93 770.0 TX 9 484.9460
    3 Thad Benefield 37 Open 118.5 120 820.0 NC 8 472.8120
    4 Ronald "Scott" Yard 30 Open 119.0 120 817.5 PA 7 470.9617
    3 Matt Baller 27 Open 141.4 120+ 840.5 AK 8 468.9990
    2 Derek Gove 25 Open 82.5 83 697.5 TX 9 467.2553
    2 Robert Trettin 26 Open 104.1 105 775.0 WI 9 464.5350
    4 Dennis "Niko" Hulslander 41 Open 143.4 120+ 830.0 PA 7 462.1440

The 1st 8 are the Open weight class winners ranked by Wilks and then the rest are all weight classes ranked by Wilks. You can see winners like Ricks, Tylutki and Tertitski passed on the world team and allowed back ups like McClain, Baller and Gove to make the team.

Interesting. Sorry I'm being dense but--how did Candito make it, since he's not on either list? Is there a separate list for Juniors?

Regardless, I probably couldn't ever make that, not much luck pushing Wilks past 450 without wraps. Thus, my dream being a "hazy" one as I originally stated.

Yea, separate list for juniors, sub juniors and masters. Junior list looked something like this:

I think out of the champs, Bottesy, Klein, Zephir and Dernyck went. So 4 spots opened up that allowed Candito to make the team.

Here's the selection process for all the different teams: http://coaching.usapowerlifting.com/...ying-criteria/
The raw ones are actually the most straight-forward...but choosing a junior equipped team is a mess when you have high school, junior, and collegiates to draw from.

I kind of wish our team was more of a...well, team. You get the sense in Norway or Russia that they all train together and you've got to think that builds a kind of group momentum. But, I guess that's the nature of the sport when it's a hobby for most and the team could suddenly change when someone else wins the national title. Still, it'd be cool if there were training camps or something...Arian, get on that.

That's not true at all. Yes a lot of norways lifters all train at the same gym but that's because that gym produces great lifters. However they don't all train together. Nor do they in Russia. It's impossible to get people training together that live on opposite sides of the country.

    This.

Like in the US, LS McClain, Shawn Frasquillo and Laura McGill all train at the same gym and all were on the world team. It just so happens that their gym produced 3 world level lifters. Same with Brad Gillingham's gym, I think they produce 3 to 4 world level lifters depending on the year and so all those guys will train together year round.

There are indeed lots of gyms in Norway with several top lifters in 1 gym. If you see Walgermo's youtube channel you can see a lot of international lifters from Norway in that one gym (I think about 8). But before competitions they train with the whole squad together for a full weekend, if I'm correct. I also think the coaches for both senior and juniors select their international squad at the beginning of the year and it stays the same for that year, so for Europeans and World's.

Russia is totally different. They train all over the country and some lifters hardly know each other. Every 2-3 lifters have different coaches from their club.
Also the winner of his/her class at Russian nationals goes to World's and the 2nd goes to European's. If you bomb, you're out. For example Sergey Mashintov, who is a former world champion and 3rd at world's last year, bombed on the bench at nationals and now 2 inferior lifters have been selected for European's and World's.

Such a great lifter with flawless technique as well as smart attempt choices and he absolutely killed this meet being his first international meet and not really knowing what to expect.

Why wasn't Castillo's 777.5kg / 1714lb total counted as an all-time-raw-no-knee-wraps-record? I guess he was a few tenths of a kilogram too heavy to be counted in the same weight class?

    82.8kg is 182.5 lbs, so technically not a 181.

Castillo is simply on another level from Lewis though.

I totally agree. Candito's instructional value is also very high; he fixed my deadlifting issues with a single quick video. I owe him a debit of gratitude.
