Awesome. You can tell he really has more left in his lifts too.

Plus, his video with the 405 like 30 sec pause squat intro...was just epic.

    770.5kg / 1699 lbs

Gibbs in the Junior division actually totaled 0.5 kg more than the Open champ, Jose Castillo. Woulda been interesting to see them go head 2 head in the Open.

This guy is a strong chap, for sure, but I'm curious as to how he has got SUCH a Youtube following. 78,000+ subscribers, half a million views on little squat tutorials, etc. Compare that to something like Eric Lilliebridge's piddly 13k subscribers. He knows how to market himself that's for sure.

(Interestingly, I ran across Brett Gibbs's channel last month. He had something like 50 subscribers. Candito made a video about Gibbs and how strong he was. Gibbs now has 3,300 subscribers overnight, haha.)

It's kind of a hazy dream of mine to drop to 183 for the IPF Worlds if I could afford the travel expense... the 205s are too scary. I'd like to think I could give Candito a challenge on squat and bench, but his DL (and total) would beat me for sure.

Gibbs is on another planet. 1699 lbs in the IPF @ 183, when the highest UN tested total of all time in any fed @181 is Ben Puccio's 1710, followed by Jamie Lewis's 1705 and those are with a 24 hour weigh in. Both Puccio and Lewis cut from low 200s, even 210s, so Gibbs is ridiculous.

Similarly, his content is good, but nothing you wouldn't find on any other squat tutorial. Advice is basically, "Bend at your hips, but don't overdo it," etc.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to talk down about the guy, I just think it's impressive that he can build that kind of viewership with nothing remotely flashy to begin with. Eric Lilliebridge has been around forever, but has nothing like the viewership Candito does, and the same can be said for almost every other big name PLer, or similar channels (like Ben Rice's) that focus on training and technique. Of course you do have big channels like Strengthcamp, but those generally have a wider target audience.

Not to diss Ben Rice but Canditos content is a lot higher quality. Better filming quality, better production etc. Jonnie puts a lot of time into his videos which others don't.

Omar Isuf gave him a shoutout and his channel exploded from there. He's a nice dude who talks in his videos instead of just showing lifting like the lilliebridges do. People want to know the person, not just their lifts.

He's also strong and does put out solid content besides simple lifting videos like Ben Rice does.

The Omar Isuf thing helps clarify. I know he puts out decent content, and I know a fair amount about viral marketing, and trust me--there are a lot of really good channels out there with next to no subscribers. It's hard work to make a channel. Again, I wasn't questioning whether his channel was good, just commenting that he had done a good job marketing it.

Candito definitely got help from some of the more popular YouTube fitness channels shouting him out. Nick Wright also helped getting him his boost. He has delivered with the content he puts out so that's cool compared to other channels.

For sure man. I remember I had just found Candy toes channel, then Omar gave him a shoutout and it was a big growth spurt from there. After reaching a certain amount of subscribers it's also easer for more and more people to find your channel too.

I was wondering the same thing, but at the end of the day, at least this 'youtube guru' actually lifts and competes at a high level. I've heard of this guy lots of times but to be honest I didn't know he competed in the IPF until a couple weeks ago.

Wasn't Candito the "200mSprinter" guy that posted here a couple years ago talking about how he would break all kinds of records in the 165 class? Was really kind of arrogant about it at first and was deep in the red after virtually everyone in the PL section tore him apart. idk, maybe they're completely different guys.

Either way, he seems like a cool enough dude these days, and if it was him I'm glad the personality turned around -- always interesting to see the "rise" of a lifter!

And now all of Gibb's recent videos are overrun with guys asking about beginner programs, poor guy.

But seriously, the more US guys at IPF worlds(es) the better. Although you'd have to win the open at Raw Nats, which probably means beating Alex Tertitski (don't know why he wasn't at worlds) so uhh...good luck.

I think 1 reason was that he went to that FitCon event the week before and lost some weight there. Also, it's his 1st international meet so he wasn't experienced with the weight loss that comes with flying and traveling in general. Last year LS McClain was 5 lbs under what he wanted to weigh in Russia, I believe. This year, Ray Williams was 10 lbs lighter than he normally competes at. Others on our team were routinely 2.5-2kg under.

Besides the fact that he's, from what I can see on his videos, a stand up guy, seems down to Earth and talks with his followers and really uses new media(facebook and youtube) to his advantage. He also gets shout outs from Nick Wright, Ogus and all the other youtube bros, so I'm sure that has something to do with it as well.

Plus he not that stereotypical 'fat' powerlifter that the kids these days think of. If you show them a picture of Lilly and Candito I'm willing to bet 99.99% of them would want to look like Candito over Lilly. I personally think it's great that he is into powerlifting and showing younger guys that there's more to lifting than trying to be that phaggot zyzz.

Yeah, why wasn't he at worlds?

You have to win the Raw Nats of your country to compete at Classic Worlds? I didn't know that. I'd never make it then. That's weird because the guys placing at the bottom of the pack aren't ridiculously strong, but I guess they just come from under-represented countries.

In the US, they ask the division champs to join the team first. If they decline, like Tertitski or Tylutki, then they begin to replace them based on highest Wilks. You can only have 2 lifters from the same country in the same weight class as well, so that also comes into play. I don't know if every country uses that same process. I know a lifter from Norway say that Dietmar Wolf makes them sign a contract that if they do Raw Worlds, then they are not allowed to do Equipped Worlds. So I guess that comes into play for Norwegian lifters as well.
