Are 7.3L Powerstroke F250 & F350's considered poverty trucks now?

I know they are supposed to be simple and reliable but they seem so ancient now.

You need upgrade to a 6.7L Powerstroke. Even a 3.5 Ecoboost is more powerful than a 7.3 Powerstroke now.

Overpriced, if you could find one in nice condition And for a good price. All day, but people know what they have and don’t let them go for cheap

I’ve got a 7.3 in a 99 2wd f350 and it puts 800 to the tires with only $5,000 in mods. The eco makes a ton of power for what it is but it doesn’t have the life and isn’t available in HD pickups like the 7.3 so capability isn’t there despite the power. You can have all the power in the world but if it’s in a half ton what do you really have besides a fast car?

The 3.5L eco blows up as soon as you start modding it though. Put bigger turbos on it and it's over.

What do you mean by capability? Towing?

Modern half tons blow away 7.3L / 12v Cummins vintage HD trucks.

Not trying to argue breh… but ive got right at 200k on my 12' 3.5L and 125k miles of that was ran on a 93 octane tune , intercooler , CAI (hot a$$ air intake in Houston right now) and and a few other tasteful mods.. in good air it made 400hp / 500tq to the tire , I only know this because I had purchased a dyno session for a charity even and had planned on tossing my coyote on the rollers but Whipple said "fk yo rods" literally the day before... Not to many cats actually go with bigger turbos on the Eco's because for the money it doesn't make a ton of extra power and you have to have fuel mods to support it.. which fuel mods on an eco=not cheap because of the DI. They will never make the numbers a modded Diesel will make.. but as far as longevity is concerned I either got a freak or they aren't as bad as the interwebz makes them out to be

    A 2002 F250 with a 7.3 was the best truck I ever had.

I put 200k of hard miles, more than half offroad on construction sites, and it ran like a top when I traded up.

Think I had an injector service and some suspension repair, but for the hell I put it through thats nothing.

Very few minor issues and they just go and go and go forever, the 7.3 and old 5.9s were the last of an era without emissions that’d run reliably for seemingly an eternity

Why are you guys comparing the 7.3 to the 3.5? We are talking about real trucks with diesels not SUV's with beds on the back of them.

If we are going to compare them, lets compare them to say the New Powerstroke 6.7. The old 7.3 as far as power and performance has nothing on the new 6.7 which is several generations in advancement. You know what else the 7.3 doesn't have? It doesn't have the aftertreatment system along with all the other emissions equipment where you have to put DEF in it. Repair bills won't always start with 4 digits not counting change. Don't even start on that "I'm going to take all that out" because good luck with that, play stupid games. The 7.3 has well enough power to pull what 99% of what people pull.

Well you didn't have turbos. The stock turbos are kind a ****ty. They do make aftermarket turbo's that bolt on and flow around 35 percent more/spool faster. You really just need fuel pump/injectors for the turbos.

The problem is the rods won't stay in the block.

I have an Eco and I've been considering it but I'm probably better off buying a Jeep SRT or BMW x5 50I and putting a tune on it.

Eco with a tune will last forever as long as you run the correct fuel.

Pretty sure he's talking about 800ft/lbs of TORQUE.

HP is how hard you hit the wall. TQ is how much of the wall you take with you.

Thats what I was thinking but ive never seen anyone say 800 to the wheels refering to torque numbers. An 800hp 7.3 would be a monster but 800 tq would not even be remotely impressive for a diesel truck.

Ok it does have a beefed Kevlar tranny but that was put in well before I started on motor work so I didn’t count that. With tranny I’m up around $10,000 into it. And yes I was referring to hp numbers not tq numbers, all external work so far though. Fuel delivery, turbo and down pipe size increase, true straight pipe exhaust, and a very radical computer reconfiguration. Tbh I get a very good deal on my stuff because my 1st cousin own a shop that specializes entirely on diesel motors. I would go snap a quick vid but it’s back at the shop getting prepped for internal work on the 7.3 itself, I wasn’t happy with how high it revved to make power so this is the next step. It will serve as a highway puller to rodeos close by should I so choose to use it and not the cabover semi but mainly it’s going to just be a hot rod. When it’s done I’ll give you all the grand tour of it.

Sorry, but no way are you getting 800hp to the tires out of a 7.3 single without extensive internal work.

I'll see if he can get me a copy of the dyno sheet.

Edit: I stand corrected 600 at the wheel (meaning fly wheel) not wheels... I owe their technician an apology now. Will still post pics and what not when I get it back though even though fairly embarrassed at the moment.
