I own quite a few of the nice old style deep-dish olympic plates, you know those ones that are about 2" wide...some are Ivanko, Ben, Pacific and York.
After a great deal of searching, I was lucky enough to find them all in the same place, most needing a little cleaning to look good again.
Why did we ever move away from this great design? So easy to hold...I realize fewer would fit on a bar in theory, but that can't be why.

Post pics of your deeps!! As in most situations, the deeper the better. Not sure why they stopped other than for more poundage on the bar. I can only load 7 deep York's on each side of the bar. Not that I am ever going to need to worry about room on the bar, but I'm sure you could probably load 12 standard York's on the same bar.

The answer to your question about where the deep dishes have gone is this, "They are all in Northernmoris's and 2MoreRepz' home gyms.
Oh, and if you see any of those bas----s with (DD) in their signature line, you know they've to some too.
On a serious note, they cracked more easily and fewer plates could go on a bar, both matters of some importance for powerlifters, who were taking off as a sport in the 1950's and 1960's.You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Exactly. There's also "special" needs like shorter bar sleeves. If you go in the opposite direction and basically have a nearly non-existent lip, the 25kg (55 lbs) competition plates are only 1", the 50kg (110 lb) are just under 2". Even 45 lb plates at 2" don't eat up too much space & aren't that much more difficult to pick up unless you lay the plate flat on the floor. Now with adding in chains &/or bands, you need a lot more bar real estate than before.
There's a few guys who lift just in the equipment forum who are knocking on 7 plates (600 lbs+ squats), so that's one reason. Another is fitting plates on plate loaded equipment as well. Imagine trying to get a significant amount of plates on a leg press. Good luck!Crews: Ivanko Barbell Crew #52, York Barbell Club #95, Equipment Crew #59

I've actually been reading a lot of great posts by AttyGuy, Northernnmoris and others in the equipment section thread...there is so much history in all the weight company foundries...so many names! Really enjoying learning, and to see that there
are a group of people who appreciate the historic gear.

OK, I am just going to say it. I am jealous as hell of the collections you guys have. I think we need to start a rule...if you are going to own that many of these great plates, you need to be able to deadlift them all in one go.
If you can't, the ones you can't lift go on public auction. Wait a minute....I'm doing math based on my max. Never mind. LOL

I ended up with some Deep Dish plates with a power rack I got on Craigslist.
Pairs of BEN 25, 35, and 45. It also came with a pair of 5's and one 2.5. Are those BEN also? How do you ID those little plates? I would like to complete the set.
As an aside, it looks like these are pretty expensive? My gym has 2 pairs each of these in 45, 35 and 25 and they may be looking to sell them ...
My plates, remove the space between the // since I can't post links.

I'm loving my deep dish plates. It's funny, I always steered clear of them at the gym, those old funky plates, but they are quite nice to use.
In any case, what do you guys do to clean them up? I sprayed mine with Simple Green and used a nylon brush on them. They came out OK, but I would like them a bit spiffier.
You can see them in post 19 (thanks Domicron)

Deep dish plates take up too much space on the bar for my liking, and grip plates just feel nicer. Off topic, but I thought it was interesting since I have recently thought about picking up some more York G2 plates to match my set. Wayfair has G2 plates a la carte, with FREE shipping. Pricing out the 45lb plates they come to $1.27 per lb shipped to your front door. Smaller G2 plates seem a little more expensive, but I didn't think that was a hateful deal for decent 45lb YORK plates.....

Picked up 655 pounds of plates today for 150 bux. Included were some deep dish plates, a pair like the white ones on the wall on ndmike99's post. I was planning on cleaning them up and repainting them. I should leave them as is?
Also were a pair of rusted 25# Ivankos, I also was going to clean those up.
There are a pair of Deep Dish (looking) Hampton 25's.
Also, a pair of old school 10's that I'm going to clean up and repaint as my set of BEN plates is missing the 10's and one 2.5.
Any info on those white plates? Are they worth keeping?
