Pulls are done to work positions and gain strength in those positions. There are several, because it depends on what you're trying to achieve. Have trouble finishing your pull, i.e. extending? Then high pulls and strengthen that up. Stronger first pull, or working to maintain positions as you come off the floor and past the knees? First pull with a pause at the knees.
What are you trying to do?? It also depends on what context the pulls are in for. Is there a program you're looking at that has them and you want to know why??Training log: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=168969133

i personally do 2 types of pulls
100% (of snatch and cj) fast and high and
maximum - as heavy as possible while still maintaining god positions but not too heavy so they turn into a deadliftSnatch 145kgs Clean and Jerk 172.5kgs Front Squat 185kgs Deadlift 205kgs BW 74 kgs
An old git training for fun now.

If you're doing the pulls with enough weight, you should be fine in gaining strength. Work your pulls up to about 110-120% of your lifts. The goal is to maintain positions while pulling and get an explosive jump at the top. You could always work up to a heavy set of snatch or clean DL after you complete your pulls, just continue to work heavier until you can't the "pop" at the extension.
