If you have never benched before, start with the bar, then add weight slowly until you reach a weight that you can do for only 8-12 reps and that can be your starting weight

If I was you I would do probably do bar, 10lb each side, 25lb each side, 30-35lb each side, 45lb each side just to gauge your strength.
But only increase if you can handle the previous weight. If the 25lb etc. each side is hard for you, then stick around there

It really differs per person. Doing benches with only the bar is always good to warm up so I recommend that you start with those. Just try the first time a little bit of weight and add a little bit until you really need to work your chest. Next time you go to the gym warm up and start with some weigth that's a little bit lower than what you pressed on the first time at the gym. If it isn't heavy enough add a couple of pounds and keep experimenting. The first weeks you'll learn form and your muscles addapt really quick so the weigth shall increase quite fast. After a couple of weeks you reach a plateau and you try to increase the weigth every week but it will be a lot harder. So in the beginning don't go for to heavy weigths cause you have to learn.

I second this advice. Start light to assess your current strength level then progress as needed. Documentation is key.
