What is everyone's thoughts on the Nest Thermostat or a similar one? Thinking about getting one soon. We have a Honeywell right now and we have it set to adjust at certain times of the day but if we are out of town, it still runs that cycle and can't turn the heat/air on before getting back in town. Any recommendations as far as good options that you can control from your phone?

To the guy asking about pull/handle templates if you dont want to make them they're usually literally like 3-5 bucks at most hardware stores.

Question boyos.. I'd like to cut down the 5 trees in my backyard, believe they are pine trees? Anyway, can I use them for firewood? And how would I do that? Store in my garage, or can I leave them outside once I cut it into smaller pieces? Sounds like a stupid question, but I'd like to keep the wood for my pit that I'd like to put in the backard..

You can use them for firewood, however, there is a fear of creosote build up in your chimney that can cause a chimney fire.

You're good to go with the wood for an outdoor fire! Just remember, as mentioned above, Pine can cause issues as well as cedar. I have always been told you never want to burn cedar inside for different reasons.

It's also going to take several months for the wood to dry out. Prob won't be able to use it until next summer.

I've practically cut down forests with my dad so I assure you that you need to let it dry. 6 months should be long enough. So if you cut them down now and burn in the fall, you should be fine, but the longer you wait the better. We usually would wait a year or so.

Not until the wood is dry. Then it's ok to cover.

Once it's dry (it'll crack and turn gray) then it's ok to store in the garage or outside with the tarp, but make sure it's not stacked on the ground. Stock it on some boards, tin, anything to keep it off the soil. I've never stored wood inside, so I'm not sure which way dries faster tbh. But I'm sure if anyone knows it's my Dad and we stored it outside until dry, then put it in the basement to burn. FYI, no better heat for a house than fire wood, I miss it.

I put in a Honeywell thermostat that has a really basic phone app, and I'm really happy I did it. It's great being able to adjust the AC from the couch or from the bed without having to get up. Or like you said, on your way home after a vacation or whatever. I definitely like having it.

I was split on whether to do this or not, but I'm glad I did. I get why people wouldn't ever do this to red brick, but it comes down to just being a personal opinion.

we did ours too , always comes out better. We just kept the black mortar. I have never liked red brick unless it was in a restaurant

Ignore the mess and wires everywhere, but I prefer the painted brick fireplace as well.

Painted brick, stained existing mantle, painted fireplace surround. The flooring is closer to a black finish now though. I had just finished the flooring in the house and it flooded and have been replacing everything fml.

Finally decided to make painting the nasty yellow exterior of the house the other day and now I am literally stumped as to where to go with a color. I originally thought I was going to paint the wood a beige/grey tone which is actually similar to the mortar, but have since decided I don't like that. Part of the problem is the color of brick, and another for me is the huge blank spaces to be painted with the garage door and open space above. I considered doing some sort of fake window or something above the garage to break up that space, but help me out misc. I've looked through tons of photos online but haven't came across anything really similar to mine to go off of. I've also toyed with painting the brick, which most tend to be against, but I'm not necessarily opposed. Thoughts?

Are there similar houses in the neighborhood? Drive around and take pictures to get an idea of what looks good in person. You can also hire a designer too, depending on how much you want to spend.

Is that all crab grass? Make sure to put down some crab grass killer this spring.

Was going to tile it, but I had some left over flooring that I did the rest of my house with, so I just finished laying this through my new kitchen:

Now I need to do the backsplash, fancy lighting and paint.

Redoing my downstairs bath (less than 90 sq ft) with vinyl flooring.

Should I go sheeting and cut it down to size or use the peel & stick tiles? I've heard of people having issues with the tiles but they'd be easier. Anyone have experience with either?

Finally got the motivation to do the backsplash, grout still missing. Need a few opionions on two things.

#1 Grout - I was going to go white as I don't want to draw to much attention to the lines, but I'm thinking a lighter gray might be nice.

#2 Window - Think I should carry the tile all the way around the window?

I would definitely do white. Where did you get your subway tiles from? I've found that the ones from Home Depot / Lowe's are not a "bright white", but almost a cream color. Take this in to consideration before using "bright white" grout. You may want to use a warmer white.

Yes, bring that all the way to the ceiling! If it were me, I'd put up crown all along the top of the cabinets and carry it around the sink as well. So if you're planning on doing that, do it first so that you know exactly where to stop the subway tiles.

Yeah, It's the brighter white version from Lowes at $.49 compared to like $.25, which was definitely creamy. Crown and under cabinet molding was waiting to be installed after I decided what to do with the tile. I'm going to put it over the top of the tile so I don't have to try and cut the angles of the crown into the tile where it meets the wall. Running the trim across the top of the sink crossed my mind, but I think I'm going to go with a wider light up there that will fill the space.
