It's almost my favorite time of the year again: rugby season! Time to shed the bulk and get back in shape using Jim Stoppani's Super Shredded 8.
Background Information:
I'm 21 years old, 6'1" and currently around 215 lbs. I'm about to graduate with my BS in Biology, and pursuing an MS in Biomedical Science prior to applying for Medical School. I've been lifting weights for 8 years. I played football for 5 years, and I've been playing rugby for 8. Currently, I'm a second row playing on scholarship for my college club team. I also dabble in powerlifting, and just competed in my first meet at Albany Strength on February 22, 2014. I weighed in at 216 and had a 5x BW total with 1,080. Unfortunately, I didn't hit any PR's, but I was coming off no sleep from midterms. Still, I came in 6/14 for my weight class (open age) with a 265 bench, 405 squat and 410 deadlift. It was an incredible experience and I can't wait to compete again in the future.
I'm finishing up week 2 of the program, so I'm going to log the beginning retroactively and then continue with daily updates as they happen!

Overall, it was a good start to the program, all things considered. It's absolutely brutal though! Definitely a drastic change from my powerlifting training. Notes:
Good workout today. Had the opportunity to work out with my friend from home who's in the Navy. It was nice to have someone push me after working out alone all spring break. I'm starting to acclimate to the high volume, but two leg days a week is still absolutely brutal! Can't wait for the program to change up next week and to be back to my familiar gym at school. Also, even though I'm home for spring break I've been a bit too lax on my calorie allowance. Fresh start Monday though! My weight is still right where I wanted it to be, so I'm not too concerned.

As far as BCAA's go, there seems to be a lot of controversy to their efficacy. Research seems to show that they aren't effective in improving body composition and muscle performance (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24620007). However, there seem to be indicators that it plays a role in improving recovery and lessening delayed onset muscle soreness (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24195702). My results have been pretty consistent with these findings. The only time that I cycle off of BCAA's is on vacations. During those times, I usually don't notice any decrease in my work capacity during training, but I do find myself a bit more sore than usual. In regards to XTend in particular, I'm a fan of the added citrulline malate and glutamine. Although the citrulline malate is not effective dose at 1g, it stacks well with the 6g of citrulline malate in my pre-workout. Glutamine has also been proven to aid in recovery. The Green Apple Explosion is the only flavor that I've tried from Xtend, and it's pretty good. It's a bit too sweet for my taste, but diluting it in more water solves that problem.
As a college student, I never really take a break from caffeine or stimulants. Prior to finally getting diagnosed and treated for ADHD, I used to average around 2g of caffeine a day.USAPL CT State Record Holder!

Notes:
Since yesterday, I switched up a lot of variables. First off, I'm back from Spring break, which means that I'm back to my school gym. That also means that I'm back to my wildly inconsistent and probably inaccurate $5 Ikea scale. If you're keeping track, that's probably why my weight is dropping ahead of schedule. I'm going to grab a digital scale in Walmart when I get the chance for the sake of consistency. Third, I used some new supplements today.
Controlled Labs were nice enough to send me a free sample package, and the first product that I'm trying out is Red Acid Reborn. I've got ten servings to test, so I'll be taking that until Saturday and posting up a quick review. My initial impression is that it is a lower stimulant thermogenic. It gave me clean energy with no jitters at all. However, as a stimulant junkie, I'd prefer something stronger. I've also noticed some appetite suppression, but it's just as likely that it's from my increased dose of ********. Regardless, it has no negative effects and my weight is dropping, so I'd say it's worth trying out if you're looking for a mild thermogenic.
I also tested Muscletech's NANO VAPOR for the first time today. I went right for 2 scoops, so that I'd get the minimum effective dose of 6g of citrulline malate between the NANO VAPOR and the XTEND. I have to admit, this supplement blows my homemade pre workout out of the water. I noticed the usual skin splitting pump that I get, however this time I was able to push through it much more easily! I felt significantly stronger than last week, as well as more focused. The energy was clean, with tons of drive and no jitters. I had a late night workout ending at 10:45 PM, so I had a bit of trouble falling asleep. I finally clocked out at around 2 AM, and had a somewhat restless sleep. I think that's pretty standard for any pre workout though, and shouldn't be an issue unless you're consistently lifting at night. The miscibility was great. After a few shakes in a standard Blender Bottle, everything was thoroughly mixed. There seemed to be some suspension, but nothing that formed clumps or made it difficult to drink. My only complain was that it foamed up quite a bit, and I had to drink the first serving, then add some more water to rinse/mix the foam and get all of it out.
Week Three of SS8 is also ass-kicking. The rep ranges are now 7-8 superset with 16-20, with only 45 seconds between sets. On top of that, there are now 2 tabatas between body parts. Absolutely brutal.Last edited by bcgadzinski; 03-19-2014 at 08:41 AM.
