Hey guys. Thought I'd ask for your opinions here. My dad and I were talking last night, and he is looking to replace his DD (08 M3) with something new.
The criteria is it needs to be a 2 door, sports car. And one of the following models. I THINK he's open to other options as well.
BMW M4 - problem here is the wait list is very difficult to get on. Doesn't matter who you are or what $ you're willing to put down to reserve no BMW dealers are budging in putting you at the top of the list. The result is as long as 18 months wait.
2014 Porsche 991 turbo. (Successor to the 911) - this was my suggestion. He is a big Porsche fan.
2014/2015 Z06 corvette - he hates Chevy, but respects the hell out of the Z06 based on leaked information. I told him he may want to anticipate a wait list similar to the M4. And the fact that hell have to deal with idiot redneck Chevy dealers. The biggest con here is that Vettes are a dime a dozen and the c7 and z06 will look very similar. That's lame.
No discussion on "engine potential" this is a DD and will not be tuned or messed with for more boost or anything else. He has a garage full of modded cars (430 scud, AC cobra, 97 supra single, etc) so the focus is reliability and performance.
Based on the above, which would you pick and why?

991 Turbo. Porsche's are just on a whole other level than BMW's. Driver experience, performance, and build quality. If he is a Porsche fan it's a no brainier. But why not a 991 GT3? I know you usually don't think of them as DD'ers but the new ones are way more street friendly than in the past.

Z06 wouldn't even be in the running (considering what he has in the garage). Too harsh for DD imo.
I gather he wants a comfy cruiser car that is still a beast. M4 or 911 Turbo would both be amazing, those would be my two pics for their two price ranges but depends on how much he wants to spend. Obviously if money isn't a problem 911 Turbo for sure.
Other options I can think of that wouldn't be my first picks:
- Aston Martin V8 Vantage
- M6
- Jaguar F-Type
- Bentley Conti GT
Overall though I think the Porsche 911 takes the cake by a huge margin.Shaking Manuel Crew

He's always liked Aston Martin but can't get over the price/performance ratio.
He looked at the M6 but said "it drives too heavy"
He would never buy jaguar. They're junk.
Bentley carries that snooty stigma I don't think he wants to associate with.
Also, those recommending a GT-R while fantastic cars and he said he admires their performance, he said they're "fugly" and "would never buy them due to look alone" -lolRedwings|Badgers|Packers

Now this is one I threw at him last night. The sl65 AMG is a hell of a car, he admits it. But for whatever reason he's turned off by Mercedes. Which is irritating to me because I own one. But the brand bias is likely because he's been an m3 owner for many years. Just a guess.

Lmao, your dad sounds like an awesome dud. No nuthug.
Honestly, I dont think you will find anything even close to as nice as a 911 for a DD. The downside to a 911, in my mind at least, is that its a bit too civilized to be a dream supercar. When you think supercar you want something a bit insane and impractical. It sounds like he has enough of that in his garage, and wants a nice comfy DD that still drives extremely well. I don't think you will find anything that fits the bill better than a 911.
Either way, that price range is awesome, the options are limitless. R8, or Mercedes SLS. I still like 911's more than both, especially as a DD, but they are sick options.
Edit*
Disregard SLS
Edit2*
This is pushing the price range, but Mclaren MP4-12C, probably annoying w/ so few dealerships though.
And another one to throw out there: Ferrari FF, they're ugly though imo
Is he down for buying used or does he want something new?Shaking Manuel Crew

Both the r8 and SLS are probably more than he would spend for a dd, not to mention very impractical.
The SLS wheel base is really goofy, they're 80% hood 20% cab.. Lol
The r8 is a service pig, and while an amazing car, not suitable for DD. They are a pretty raw drive, not unlike a gt2/3
Edit: ea looking brand new. Used is not an option as those vehicles usually carry a history of being beaten on.Redwings|Badgers|Packers

Everyone's tolerance is different. I drove a 997.2 GT3 and thought it was fine. The biggest issue was ground clearance but that is solved with the lift kit option. The new one is suppose to be even more street friendly. At least have him test drive one when he checks out the 991 Turbo.

z06 ride is too harsh for daily, doubt the c7 version will be any different.
911 is too small. interior space makes it suck for DD. No room for golf clubs so if he's got a appointment somewhere and wants to go golfing afterwards then GL with that. Barely enough room to pick up groceries. Don't even know why it has those jokes of a back seats. Not really practical for DDing. I'd still get it though as handling and balance of porsches are in a league of their own.
m4 is probably the most practical doe a DD but he's driven the m3 so get something new to experience.
Maybe look at the Lexus RC-F but that might be too poverty for him. It has sufficient room so better as a DD and still has decent power. And of course Lexus reliability. And they've also stepped up their game so driving dynamics have improved a ton over previous gens.
I'd still say go for the 991 but I'm biased and considering trading the c6z for a Cayman S.wait wut

I haven't seen a release date for them yet, but the Gen 3 CTS-v will be tough to beat for a daily driver. Hell, the V2 is tough to beat.
I'm not a fan of the coupe though (looks wise), but love the looks of the sedan. I know you said no to 4 door, but he may like the looks of the coupe. You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

Re: the back seat in the 991/911 it's for insurance purposes. Insuring a 4/5 seat vehicle versus a 2 seat makes a tremendous difference. He doesn't golf, so that's not an issue. Lol
I'll mention the RC-F, he's not opposed to other options, as the family has owned a is350 before, so this might be a consideration. Its less about "poverty" to him than it is performance.Redwings|Badgers|Packers

The coupe pisses me off for how unusable it is. The thing is as big as the sedan but they made the back and trunk pretty much useless. I'd also take an M4 over a CTS-V any day of the week if I had a ferrari in the garage. Remeber, your priority's for a DD will change when you own multiple awesome cars.
I highly doubt he'll like the RC-F more than an M4. I think the main reason to buy an RC-F over an M4 would be reliability, but doesn't sound like a bit more cost in maintenance is that big of a deal to him.
RC-F looks amazing though imo.Shaking Manuel Crew

i can't really think of any other options that haven't been said
maybe a c63 black series? but you said he doesn't like benz. It's a shame you said he doesn't like the m6, saw 2014 in interlagos blue (sp?) comp package on it thing looked ****ing amazing.
honestly I would go with the porsche, things going to hold its value much better compared to the C7 zo6 (if that kinda thing matters to him)
