Tall vs. Short in fist fight

reach is an advantage usually, but if the shorter person is more experienced he still has a chance. All else being equal the taller person will have an advantage in stand up

I never fight short guys. Well, after the one time I did, I won't do it again. He stepped up close to me under my punch range and I couldn't hit him. It was like fighting a little wolverine.
But did you die?

Each have their advantages, but if the guy knows how to punch reach is badass son.

Short people can do that jumping uppercut like Little Mac in Punchout!

I think it'll usually come down to skill. A shorter stocky guy can just block his face and get inside your reach, then tear you up from so close you can't get a good punch off, plus lower center of gravity makes him harder to take down as long as he's got a decent sprawl

I know size is generally thought of as an advantage but look at Fedor. He's only 6' (which is pretty short for HW).
He's beaten guys well over 6'6... Wasn't one like in the 7' range?
A lot of professional fighters are short for their weightclass
Fedor 6' HW
Tyson 5'9 HW
Sherk 5'6ish LW
etc... A lot of the better 155lbers are only 5'6.
weight and skill > reach/height

Not talking trained fighters, but in street fights, a tall guy with solid, straight punches vs. a small guy with the same skillset, tall guy usually wins with better range and leverage. You lose pop with your fist above your shoulder.

i myself being a borderline manlet . i would always be scared to fight a guy shorter than me cas whens he gets inside the reach and starts swinging its pretty much difficult for the tall guy to place a punch . and the centre of gravity thing makes it even tough .

lol tall would weigh more and have a better reach not to mention more velocity in their punch. its hard to wrestle a tall kid even though they are lanky if they are strong it will be a tough match

why dont you tall guys push the smaller guys away when they r inside?
-
02-17-2009, 07:59 AM #26
90%? **** son why not say 99%, not like you have any proof to back it up anyway.
And theres a difference between some random throwing a punch and someone whos trained at striking. If you train MMA then you WILL do punch/kick/knee/elbow practice. I see plenty of knockouts in UFC fights.
Besides I still dont see what you are trying to prove, MMA contains striking and thats all I claimed and its a FACT, so move on.

depends how heavy the tall guy is
big difference between fighting 6'2 170 and 6'2 240

I tend to just try clinching short guys who try to get inside on me. Clinching up and throwing knees tends to discourage that behavior, unless they are very good at dirty boxing and can drop elbows when I throw knees, or are very good at the clinch and know to close while being clinched to avoid the straight on knees. That is assuming they get inside from jab/teep range in the first place.
Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. -Mike Tyson

In b4 ****storm of manlets claiming their manletness/napolean syndrome makes them supreme fighters and total badasses.
