    The PowerBlock Dumbbell Thread

Since there have been a lot of questions about the older, discontinued PowerBlocks, I thought a specific reference thread might be helpful. Specifications for the current PowerBlock dumbbells can be found on the company's website: www.powerblock.com. Information about some of the older sets are outlined below. Feel free to add details about the current powerblocks.

    Current PowerBlocks

    Urethane Series:
    XXXL Heavy Weight
    U-90
    U-70
    U-33
    U-20

    Classic Series:
    Elite
    Classic 50 Plus

    Sport Series:
    Sport 9.0
    Sport 5.5
    Sport 5.0
Sport 2.4 (some were rebranded and sold as "GoFit")

    Discontinued PowerBlocks

U-50 (discontinued but still available as a "club set")

    U-50 photo

The U-50 has a weight range of 5-50 lbs. Pin changes provide 5 lb increments and 2 internal adder weights can be added/removed for all 2.5 lb increments. It is not expandable. Dimensions at 50 lbs: 13"L x 7"W x 7.25"H

    Personal Trainer Set

    Personal Trainer photo

The Personal Trainer Set is a hybrid set utilizing the weight stack from the Classic 45 Set and the handles of the Elite Set. Pin changes provide 5 lb increments and 2 internal adder weights can be added/removed for all 2.5 lb increments. The Personal Trainer Set is not expandable. The dimensions are: 12"L x6" W x 6" H.

    Classic 45 Set

    Classic 45 photo

The Classic 45 Set adjusts from 5-45 lbs in 5 lb increments. It does not have internal adder weights. The dimensions of the Classic 45 are; 12"L x6" W x 6" H.

The Classic 60 Plus Handle Set upgrades a Classic 45 from 5-45 pounds per hand to 5-60 pounds.

    photo of Plus handle

    Elite Aluminum Set

    Elite Aluminum photo

The Elite Aluminum Set comes with the same plates as the Elite Set and it is expandable using the same add-on kits and weights as the Elite Set. The difference is that the ends on the Elite set are molded, and the ends on the Aluminum handles are extruded, machined from 6061 aircraft grade aluminum and polished.

The Elite Aluminum handle weighs approximately 10lbs without adder weights whereas the Elite handle weighs approximately 5 lbs without adder weights.

    Medical Set

The Medical Set is a hybrid set utilizing the weight stack from the Personal Set and the handles of the Pro Rexan Set. Pin changes provide 5 lb increments and 2 internal adder weights can be added/removed for all 2.5 lb increments.

    Pro Aluminum

The Pro Aluminum Set comes with the same plates as the Pro Rexan Set and it is expandable using the same add-on kits and weights as the Pro Rexan Set. The difference is that the ends on the Rexan set are molded, and the ends on the Aluminum handles are extruded, machined from 6061 aircraft grade aluminum and polished.

The Pro Aluminum handle weighs approximately 10lbs without adder weights whereas the Pro Rexan handle weighs approximately 5lbs without adder weights.

    Pro Rexan

The Pro Rexan 5-45 lbs base set comes with plates 1-4. Pin changes provide 10 lb increments and 2 internal adder weights can be added/removed for 5 lb increments and some 2.5 lb increments.

This set can be expanded or upgraded with add-on kits. The 40 lb add-on kit, plates 5-8, would take the set from a maximum weight of 45 lbs to 85 lbs in each hand. The Big Block Kit, plates 5-11, would take the set from a maximum weight of 45 lbs to 125 lbs in each hand. The big block kit uses a tray to help support the extra weight.

The Pro Set was discontinued and replaced by the Elite Set in Sept 2005. The Pro set can be identified by two holes in every plate. In the photograph the Pro set is on the right side. The other weight plate shown is a Classic Elite weight plate. The Elite set is manufactured by welding two metal weight plates together.

    Personal Set

This set adjusts from 5-45 lbs in 5 lb increments with a pin change. It does not use internal adder weights.

The Personal Plus Handle Set upgrades a Personal Set from 5-45 pounds per hand to a maximum of 60 pounds.

    SportBlock

The SportBlock adjusts from 3-21 lbs in 3 lb increments with a pin change. It does not use internal adder weights. This set cannot be expanded.

+1 on this. I am currently looking for a second set of adjustable DB's, and I have shied away from Power Blocks because I can't understand all of the different models that are out there.

hallelujah. around here, id guess at least half of the PB listings on CL (and Ebay) are mislabeled in regards to name or weight total...often both.

so is the tripleXL the only current urethane-covered series with a straight handle instead of a contoured handle?

I think all of the urethane PowerBlocks have a contoured handle but I've only seen photos of the XXXL. Here's a link to Jason's review: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...hp?t=153389821

I would prefer a straight handle, especially for heavy weight, but it is a very well made handle and it has a good feel. I went with the urethane since I liked the coated plates and the flex design. I've gotten used to the handles but they are a bit fatter than the Elite handles. ...maybe it's strengthened my grip.

The comparison chart is a great place to start for the newer dumbbells: http://powerblock.com/series-differences.php My favorites are the urethane ones but they do have a contoured handle and they're a little bigger than the uncoated PowerBlocks. I like how the adjustment pin slides in grooves on the rails of the Urethane series. Also, the coated plates are quiet. And the fit and finish is a bit nicer over all.

Deals on Craigslist have a way of deciding things. I currently have the U-90 but I've previously owned the Pro Rexan 85 and the U-50.

One thing to consider is that a smaller set might be good if it is not your only set of adjustable dumbbells. A 50 lb set makes a nice combo with a heavier set of PowerBlocks or Ironmasters. The sets that max out at 50 lbs have some benefits like 5 lb increments with a pin change (rather than 10 lb increments) and ALL 2.5 lb increments with the adder weights. The larger sets have most of the 2.5 lb increments but not all of them. I find the smaller increments more useful on lighter weights.

I don't have any experience with the SportBlocks. The handle has a more open design than the urethane or classic. The SportBlocks have the contoured handle of the urethane series but uncoated plates.

THis is exactly what I have in mind, although it would be nice to have another set of IM's. It will all come down to what CL has to offer, and I don't need to rush.

Do you have a sense of what a typical 50 lb set and an 85-90 lb set should go for on CL? I know now that there are lots of different sets, and this may be part of the wild price variations that I see. It would be helpful if I could sort of ballpark it.....

Btw, all of the info was from the internet archive of the Powerblock website. *****://web.archive.org/web/*/http://powerblock.com Although some pages and images are missing, it's a useful resource for looking up discontinued products by other brands as well. ...for example, out of business companies like Body Masters *****://web.archive.org/web/*/http://body-masters.com

The prices can be all over the place.

A used set of U-50s sells for around $200. I think the original retail was around $370. 50 lb Elites sell for about the same even though the original retail was less. The average cost of the old personal set (often labeled "The Block" on the handle) is much lower --they're a tough sell. I've seen people practically give them away.

The 85-90 lb sets are much more popular. I think it's because a lot of folks just want one set to do everything. The urethane 90s retain much of their value. Everyone wants them for $400 but $450-500 is more likely... some people are literally foaming at the mouth when they see them for $400. I've flipped a lot Pro Rexan 85 for $300 to $350 with stand. I've bought them for as little as $75... several times. The guys that have had the Pro Rexan sets for 10-20 years sometimes sell them for next to nothing. Others sell the Pro Rexan sets for close to the retail price of the newer PowerBlocks.

All PowerBlock dumbbells and kettleblocks are 20% off at Scheels. They have the U-90 and SportBlock 5.0 and 9.0 and several other models.

Hey Guys, of the classifications in this thread what is the "Elite 5-90" sold on this site classified as? http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/po...-set-5-90.html

I don't think this is the aluminum Elite. Perhaps Urethane? Also anybody the maximum weight they are expandable to? Thanks in advance.

Those are Classics, expandable up to 130. The aluminums have been discontinued for awhile. The Urethanes are still around, I think they go up to 175.

Hey guys I just noticed that Amazon sells two of the discontinued sets, the personal trainer set:

    amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000NWTX6W?cache=1391046501&pi=SX200_QL40#ref=mp_s _a_1_1

    And the classic 45 set:

    amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000A6QINW?cache=1391046836&pi=SX200_QL40#ref=mp_s _a_1_1

Just thought I'd throw that up here

Trying to decide between IronMasters or these. How much would you pay for a used set of Heavy Weight 175s with a stand? There's one on ebay for $1k. Seems high and a ton to spend on DBs. I probably only press about 125-135 anyway and that's for flat bench.

I prefer Powerblocks up to 90 lbs and Ironmasters at heavier weights. I've never used the XXL Powerblocks though. I wouldn't be happy with just one pair of Ironmasters. I don't like changing weights on the Ironmasters, so my solution was to buy both on Craigslist. I might have been satisfied with two or three sets of Ironmasters to reduce time changing weights. I've actually bought and sold at least a half dozen from each brand and ended up keeping U-90s and Ironmasters.

Yeah, I started with the Ironmasters, but I'm lazy, and my wife has been working out with me lately, so I just lucked up and scored some 85lb Pro Rexan Powerblocks off Craigslist. I think having both will be a little taste of Heaven. FYI, I paid $300 for the Pro Rexan 85lb set with a stand. (Seller called them "90lb. Elite set", but they are the same as pictured above from Northernmoris)

Side note: I see people say the Pro Rexans go to 85lbs.. but that's w/o the adder weights, right? Is it really a 90lbs set or does each plate weigh less than 10lbs or something? I haven't got around to weighing them yet, but they seem like they would be 90lbs. Just curious.

They should weigh 85 lbs with the adder weights. The description is at the top of this catalog page:

There is a set of IM's with the 120 lb kit on CL near you right now, although the price seems a tad high. Not my ad, by the way. Anyway, if you can get a decent price on a used 120 lb set, you can then get the 165 lb kit from Ironmaster for another $300 or so shipped.

I recently picked up a set of 120 lb IM's, and picked up a set of 75 lbers last week for pretty decent prices. If you manage to find 2 sets like that, you might be able to order just the screws from Ironmaster. I think you have to get pretty lucky to find 2 sets at good prices, but it can be done. Might be another way to skin a cat if you have the time and patience for it.

I have an older set of PBs with the textured finish on the weights. 90#.

Maybe you can add the specs to their benches to the first post? I'm wishing I never sold my Gen 1 PB bench. I'm watching CL for another one.

Can somebody confirm which set of powerblocks these are? I'm not sure if they are Pro Rexan or the Personal set.
