Do you think Harley Race went to the gym?

A random question, but I was curious.

I heard he got his cardio by smoking entire cigarettes in one drag, until the pack was gone.

I'd watched TONS of Harley race matches, and while I was a fan, you get the feel that his cardio wasn't that great. Though matches were slower paced back then. Every move he executed from an array of suplexes, variety of knees, slams, were executed to perfection no matter how much he'd sweat and look tired. When I think of the classic "red meat and beer" look of the old pro wrestlers, he tends to be one of the first that stand out in my mind, him and Dick Murdoch. Though those two were rugged tough as nails badass. Like you really got that feeling that when you step in the ring against them, you don't have to worry about how many hours they spent in the gym, or how many hours they spent drinking or brawling in a bar, all you had to worry about was not getting your head kicked in. And....Race was the first man to bodyslam Andre The Giant, so he had to be strong to do that sh*t. To Andre.

He probably did the same type of workout Bruiser Brody did. Old school basic things. Didn't matter if he worked out or not because he could pretty much fuk anybody up in the locker room if he needed to. Excluding maybe Haku

Reading Race's book was interesting-early in his career he was lucky to survive an accident that killed his new wife who was pregnant in front of his eyes, it shattered his forearm & then was just saved from having his leg amputated & was told he may never walk again & would certainly never wrestle again. Sad that alcohol made him a pauper & led to more serious injuries & losing his job with WCW.

Nope that was the 'joke' about Brody not losing locker room fights. Thing is most of these guys are tough guys only be reputation-never heard of Brody actually fighting anybody-he used his appearance/size to intimidate promoters & other wrestlers & was said to have bullied Invader in WWWF & possibly Puerto Rico. Yeah he scared Luger-but Brody was a veteran with a rep & Luger had only been in the business for a year or so & the guy just doesn't sell anything for him-not that he ever sold anything much anyway.

Billy Jack had issues with the police in his youth & was said not to be somebody you wanted to mess with, nor was his pal Hercules who knocked people out in bar fights & went to WWF after being fired from Florida because he beat up tough guy Wahoo McDaniel in a locker room fight-Wahoo was the booker at the time. Dr Death pulled a car door off trying to save somebodies life & backed down Hawk in WCW-but was a peaceful guy. But yeah most stories are embellished/told from one point of view etc.

Brody was a good brawler, but some of his matches are hard to watch because he never wanted to sell for anybody. The Luger match is honestly cringe worthy to watch. Also, any reason why Brody never wanted to job to anyone? I know he was known throughout the world, but what gave him such a huge ego?

Brody is, according to the smarts and oldschoolers, the greatest brawler of all time. I believe, IIRC, Dave Meltzer's Hall of Fame he even named the best Brawler of the Year award, the "Bruiser Brody Award". He's one of the greats who could be that by not being the best seller in the business, like Great Muta/Keiji Mutoh imo.

Bruiser to me will always be: great brawler (hey, maybe GOAT) and big name attraction
but totally selfish and unprofessional - wouldn't stick to his commitments or accept the finishes to his matches.

From what I understand, the way it worked then was a wrestler would lay down for you, then you would lay down for them at some point. Brody never wanted to lay down for anybody.
To be a fan of his during his run, must have been downright frustrating since he didn't do this, nor was he guaranteed to stay in one place for too long. Booking him in long time feuds with promotions top guys had to be tough on the promoters.

However despite his bad reputation, I am a fan as he was fun for me to watch. I used to collect his stuff on compilation tapes and I watched them many times over (even though I DID have a girlfriend back then!).

I enjoyed his matches with Abdullah The Butcher. Long term booking for the guy definitely had to suck when he constantly had a bad attitude and never wanted to job.

I think he & Hansen are vastly overrated because of how selfish they were-Bockwinkel on his shoot interview said they just took from the business & gave little if anything back. Basically there was an attitude back in those days that you didn't lose clean on tv-which is one reason most shows were full of squash matches with the stars beating the jibronis. Also they didn;t want ot lose because of their status in Japan-fearing word/photos would be seen & their 'aura' would evaporate.

A match against Flair from 1983 really rankles because Flair was the world champ but got punted around & was pinned first fll, the second fall was a bs Brody getting counted out I think as Flair just beat the count back in & then the third fall was a dq when Jerry Blackwell interfered. He gave Flair so little it was embarrassing-so he wouldn't even lose a clean fall to the guy holding the prestigious belt. Basically most of their matches lack in psychology because they were so unwilling to sell properly for people-if it wasn't a top guy like Baba, Jumbo or Funk they wouldn't sell at all.

The worst one was when he & Snuka were in the NJPW Tag League finals & he got off the train on the way there because his paranoid mind believed he wasn't being paid enough-bear in mind this was I think 1986 & he was getting paid somewhere between 8-10 thousand dollar a week.

He got better after Brody died-he did the clean job for Hogan when Gordy refused & ended up putting over the rising stars. I am trying to think of Brody losing clean & the only one I can think of was him losing to Jumbo just before he was killed-although he didn't have much choice after walking out on Baba to go to Inoki in 1985 & then walking out on Inoki in 1986, Baba only took him back under certain conditions.

Interesting stuff. I actually liked Hansen's work. I know he had the whole style of working stiff because he was legally blind, but his work in Japan was pretty good in my honest opinion.

I preferred him to Brody-but for most of the 1980's he just didn't sell enough to make you think he could lose. Flair & Race both made you believe they could lose at any time & even Hogan sold a lot for his opponents.

Jimbob raises a very good point that I wasn't thinking about atm. Is that Brody had big name value in Japan. In Japan he had this unstoppable, and unbeatable image. Japan was where he received his biggest pay days. Therefore he may have felt that jobbing in the states before heading back over to Japan to main event against Giant Baba and Jumbo Tsuruta wasn't best for his image as it may've even killed that unbeatable aura or mystique thus result in less money for him. So I guess that makes sense. However taking the odd clean loss wouldn't hurt his career in the long-run, no it wouldn't have. Being a heel especially, with no losses is inexcusable.

And Jimbob, also good call. As I completely forgot he lost to Jumbo clean. As for him never getting pinned by opponents he engaged in long-term feuds with...one of them I'm fine with was the rivalry with Jerry Blackwell as I HATED Blackwell for some reason. Sack of sh*t inside the ring really. You'd think Brody have lost clean to Abby.

I loved his stuff with Abby too, Tim. Unlike Abby, I think Brody was a solid worker when it came to wrestling more styles with different opponents.

Wasn't just Japan-Puerto Rico as well. it is believed his refusal to lose on that final tour may have contributed to what happened.

It just got to the point of stupidity-when he jumped to NJPW he refused to lose to Inoki at any point in their feud & Inoki likewise-in many ways it was a problem with th culture in that double countouts & dq's were the end result of so many classic matches. Baba was eventually convinced he had to stars to lose clean in 1990 as people were sick of the screwy finishes & put Misawa over Jumbo.

I think Abby lost to Brody on a US show around 1986/1987. I liked Blackwell, then again I never rated Yoko while I know you & many others love the guy.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I remember reading years ago that Baba (I am pretty sure it was him) who prided AJPW on always having clean finishes? He always wanted every win to be decisive with a clear cut winner?

From 1990 onwards yes. The 1980's were mostly these epic matches with lame finishes. I think there was some backlash from the fans who got sick of it & attendances started dropping which prompted him to change to mostly clean pins.
