I know a lot about the industry. I follow it closely and have done so for years. I was in the Valley in September and will be back there a few weeks from now (I'm moving permanently from the east coast). I could tell you that I'm going to be in the industry soon but you'd think I was BSing so I won't elaborate on that until it happens.

The money isn't what it was pre-2008 but make no mistake, there is still lots of money to be made and it still blows most other occupations out of the water. Sex still sells, and always will. Where else can you basically show up at the door as a total newbie and earn 1 or 2 grand on your first day, depending on what you're willing to do? Nowhere else but the sex biz. I'm not simply talking about porn, I'm talking about all of it: porn, escorting, stripping, camming, promotions, appearances, branding, etc...the list goes on. These days most performers are branching out and working on multiple fronts. That's the biggest difference between now and 5+ years ago. The money is still there, you just have to be smart and diversify your revenue sources. That's why most of the newer girls in the industry are doing escorting and stripping on the side.

Other industries aren't doing as well as they used to either. Keep that in mind. Lots of struggling lawyers, doctors, finance people, and other white collar professionals these days. The gap between the rich and middle class continues to widen. You want to see some hard data on the sex biz? Go spend some time browsing the listings on Sexyjobs.com. Some of the "talent" (that is, performers seeking work) reveal how much compensation they're seeking/used to getting. That's the closest thing to hard numbers that you're going to get in an industry that's notoriously secretive and where everybody gets paid in cash, often under the table.
