When to start using a belt

Pulled 180kg (396lb) the other day fairly easily after not deadlifting for a while, shooting for a 200kg (440lb) in the next couple of weeks and would like to get around the 250kg (550lb) mark by 2014.

When should one start using a belt if at all, and will it effect overall back aesthetics in a negative way?

    Thanks guise

Its funny how tmisc hardly ever has good answers to legitimate questions because you're all too busy with your raging porn addictions and wanking all day to have any knowledge of lifting.

    And it shows

For me I only used it for competing and within around 80-90% of my max deadlift. Personal preference though.

Does tighten everything up, that is if you have a half decent belt.

It thightens up your core, some people say it might prevent hernia, some say that it can give you some edge when pulling deads (more thight core, more weight u can move). I use it just for safety. If you got money and going for pulls over 450lbs by all means go and invest in a good belt, like Inzer (even tho my belt is chit)

Belts are used to lift more weight. You use it when you want to add more weight to the bar.

I've found it useful for preserving my lower back, especially as I squat + DL on the same day... i.e been able to get more lifts in p/week without the lower back tightness/fatigue.
