"Excuse me sir, I saw the help wanted sign out front, are you still looking for help?"
"Yes, we're looking for someone who can head our new department. We'll pay you enough to support an entire family. Can you read and write?"
"Yes sir."
"Great! You start Monday!"
Now
"Hmm, this job pays $9/hr, I guess it's kind of related to my Master's Degree in Organic Chemistry. Hopefully they call in the next few days."
or
"Hi John Doe. We received your application and would like to arrange 3 phone interviews before meeting face to face".
"First Question: Tell me about a time you had a mysterious dream. What happened and what do you think it meant?"
"Alright John Doe you did great with the phone interviews. Next is phase 1 of 3 for our face to face meetings. Tell us about a time you felt embarrassed. How did you handle it?"
"Alright John Doe, we felt good about you after all three in-person interviews. Before we go any further though we need you to write an essay explaining how you embody the values of this company."
"Congratulations John Doe! You got the job! Before you start, you'll have to participate in a two day company orientation as well as two weeks worth of training. After that you will start on Monday and will be on a 3 month probationary period so we can evaluate your skills and see if you're worth keeping."

so true about the interview process, some HR questions are just so stupid now days.
Gov jobs have the most ridiculous interview process. I had to drive an hour and a half to to a small town because their located there not the city everyone lives in, take a whole day to do 2 tests that take 30 mins. Then do a phone interview and then drive back to that chitty city for a face to face interview. Whole process takes 4 months, efficiency, not even once. And that was just to be put into a pool of candidates for when a real job opens up, where you have to do even more interviews and testsLast edited by jasonjb; 09-20-2013 at 09:39 AM.

That's not how it worked, at all.. You people are delusional.
It worked two ways:
A- you finished high school, got a factory job and worked it for the rest of your life. You made a comfortable living, raised a family but never got rich.
B- you went to college and had a dad, uncle, family friend, etc.. in the company that gave you a middle-management position in which you moved up from.
I don't know why everyone thinks that the 50's and 60's was one big, free gravy train.Born in Lithuania | Living in Chicago |

Not really. Every generation has "the latest technology".
I bet you an 18 year old could work a tech job out of HS, but employers don't want to train them. They want employees to pay for training (i.e. schooling).
One of the biggest problems is companies not taking the time/effort to train their employees."There is no such thing as the future; only the continuation of the present."
