Interesting read through everyone's personal goals.
I'm sure it will get me laughed at but:
*strength for strength's own sake isn't a goal of mine (above a basic adult guy who cares about fitness levels)
*I want strength enough for the activities that I do for fun, be they mt biking, or mx racing, or enduro/harescrambles
*i got no desire for big burly dead lift 500lbs type strength, i don't see the functional benefit - other than trouble buying clothes
Ideal physique for me is whip-cord thin and ripped...
Exhibit A: Tyler Durden in Fight Club
Exhibit B: Cord in Circle of Iron (1978, that's a deep pull if you're still with me)
Exhibit C: Bruce Lee anytime
Why? B/c it's uber functional.
It's also a PITA for a guy like me who's been chubby since high school and can gain 10lbs/wk by merely not monitoring/weighing food.
I'm in a Battle Royale with myself to get down, I'm at an all-time adult LOW weight now, at 6-1 / 196lbs approx 18%bf - gunning for ~180/single-digits.
It's been 3yrs of a death match with destiny, I'm down ~50lbs right now.Last edited by ncj01; 09-12-2013 at 03:18 PM.

This is goal, I have failed miserably. I started lifting in high school (1986), took a 2 years off in collage then started lifting again. I have messed up my shoulder several times and took 3-6 months off each time and have a knee problem (patellar tracking issue) that caused me to take more time off. Last spring I had physical therapy for both shoulders, my workoouts have been going good the last couple of months hopefully it will continue. I am thinking that this is not a realistic goal considering my shoulder problems.

I didn't think I did, but a friend of mine snapped a photo of me this weekend at LocknFest. I had no idea he had taken it until he posted it and tagged me on FB this evening. So I wasn't posing or flexing; I was just walking around listening to the music, and drinking a beer. And I still look---well, I think I definitely look like I lift.
Sorry, I just wanted to share that, because I'm pretty proud. I made it my FB profile pic.Sheriff John Brown always hated me

Dude, don't worry about such things. When in public wear baggie clothes. I've got to tell you this story. This guy standing about 6'4". Me. 6'0" even challenges me on a Leg Pulling Machine.
I thought the guy with his long leg was going to beat me in such a short time. But no. I won in last than a minute! lol I should have told him that it came from climbing "Mount Mother****er" every morning. lol And when I do get in shape at 250lb. there is a sense of fear in people that I might hurt them! Lol Weird as hell! Now what's going to happen when I reach 270 or 300! The SWAT TEAM? LOL

Yeah, I think there is room for everybody. Although I did give the ---------> to the guy Flex satirized earlier. As a newbie at 53, my goal is hopefully attainable. I just want to keep progressing in the direction I've been going. I want the abs that are showing in my profile pic to show without the use of shadows. I want my waist as small as possible (30" probably) and my lats and shoulders to form a V. Build my pects and arms on top of that. Lean, yet muscular. Legs need work as well.

Question for those whose goals are to be skinny-ripped...
Is it just more easily attainable of a goal, so it attracts you? I mean I know its not "easy" but lets be honest its a lot more instantly rewarding than taking the time to bulk and grow big then cutting down to single digits. You can have the definition and shredded features for your selfies to post in your body space in only months lol....
(See "I look like a beast in my avatar but do I even lift in real life crew")
Is it just what you find most asthetic?
Got goals like marathons or iron man and too much muscle mass would hinder that?
Just curious and not meaning any disrespect or anything.. I just don't get it.. I mean I get it, because I thought I wanted that too.. Until I got into the single digits, 5'9 165 pounds and realized that with anything more than a tank top on I just like looked like your average skinny twig..The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.

I am talking more about the skinny shredded look.. I understand not wanting the very very big look.. But the big and strong look is far from the Ronnie Coleman look..
BTW. I think big muscular women are sexy as hell.. not so much the juiced up female look of today's pro female bbers. But the strong muscular natural female shape...yummy.The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.

I wouldn't consider myself ripped though I'm on the skinny side. But that's by choice. My definition of success is being able to run a half marathon, have a perfect CBC and lipid panel, BF somewhere around 13 - 15%, and have muscle. If I can maintain that til I die then I achieved my goal. Yes, I know I'm on a body building website - I learn a lot about best practices here that I incorporate in to my routine and i come to the OV35 misc for the laughs.

When I first dieted down from a fat soft 215 to 169 I was still skinny fat. I would have loved to have been skinny ripped. Three years of continuous training and nutrition tracking and I'm still not sure I'll look much better if I get down to single digits on this cut. I'm improving but it is slow. Easy is a relative term in body building.

The only selfies I ever take are for this site. And as you can see I post new ones maybe once per year so being 'lean' to take selfies is not my motivation.
And to be honest I'm not sure I'd say that I don't want to be bigger ... just that it's nowhere near the top of my list.
Also, you know what a sleeper car is right? I've always liked my cars to be sleepers. And I think that is sort of my nature in general ... I don't want people to know what I have. So to me, being a lawn dart but being able to lift more weight than people think you should be able to fits perfectly into my personality/nature.

Is there a reason you quoted me in this post? I don't want to be skinny ripped. I want to be large ripped. I am however self aware enough to appreciate that I am never going to be massive. That is just because I am a skinny phuck though, not because it is my aim. Since I've been in here I have steadily put on weight, and am keeping trying to do so.
My take is that lots of people get overexcited about 6 packs because that is what the mainstream media sell as the modern ideal. Then the fitness industry sells that ideal to gullible punters as being an instant solution, ie "get a 6 pack in 12 seconds a day". What the punters don't recognise, and the fitness industry has no interest in admitting, is that getting a 6 pack without adding lean mass is a pretty pointless exercise if it is achievable at all.
But I don't see many long term posters saying they want to be skinny ripped anyway. That expression normally seems to be reserved for when the big lads want to insult the smaller ones.
Yes there are a few misguided first time posters who say they don't want to get bulkier, but they quickly disappear or change their aims...

Being smaller and strong requires just as much work. My short term goal is to break 1000 at under 165 lbs. Size, by and large, is a function of diet. The training required to have impressive lifts and an impressive physique at 165 isn't "easy". To meet my short term goal, it will take a considerable amount of attention to both diet and training. Being lackluster in either won't get me there.
