It's not about how amazing your dog is. It could be a stupid dog that always runs off and ruins your furniture. The point is that quite a lot of dog owners/lovers see them as members of the family and not just as pets. A stranger dies and nobody bats an eyelid. A family member dies and it can be devastating.

srs i I loved my dog I cried for days when I had to give him away its uncanny how more human dogs are then some humans.
The amount of loyalty, love and happiness they bring to a home is unbelievable only a dog owner would understand this but in saying that I could never choose my dog over human life it’s immoral and unchristian i couldn’t sleep at night if i choose my dog also its selfish act.1915,1933,2003, 2014 Genocide after Genocide.

A rat breathes air. Not seeing a relevant point here.

I said a stranger in my op for the record.
Lee, I don't blame you one bit for your point of view on this. I would most definitely choose my daughter, mother and sister over my dog. Beyond that my dog is like my 2nd child and best friend all in one so she would be the choice.
The only difference between her and a human is she can't talk. She feels and has a personality just like you and I.

Some bullsh!t anecdote..... When my Dad was younger he moved to Australia for a while with some friends. One day they were out at a beach and were standing up on a cliff. From there they stood and noticed a man drowning in the sea and eventually died. One of my Dad's friends then said flippantly "There's one less for the ladies".
Not a whole lot of point to the story but it just shows how people do take human life for granted. I doubt he would of said something like that had it been his dog and not a stranger.Sports Science & Health Undergraduate

There are too many variables to say whether or not I would save my dog or a stranger. Situation, age, consequence, etc. This does not diminish my love for my dog, nor the value of life (human/animal).
Dogs serve many purposes outside of 'man's best friend.' K9, all the dogs we used in Iraq/Afghanistan, service dogs, guide dogs, etc.
I do not think it is as easy as saying "of course I'd save my dog," or "human life > animal life."Follow me on an enchanting adventure (My Log):

Easily my dog
Some (not all obviously) humans are disgusting:
http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...-shot-oklahoma
That is just one example and again NOT ALL humans are like this however every day you hear of rapes, kids being molested, shot, etc. So to just make a blanket statement that humans>dogs is silly. Dogs don't do things like thisLast edited by naturalguy; 08-23-2013 at 05:54 AM.

I am not going the political route, I am just saying that dogs don't do the disgusting things that humans do like this animal who kept these girls prisoner for years and raped and tortured them over and over again:

Don't get me wrong there are great humans in this world and the majority of them are good people but a dog would never purposely torture someoneFree Agent

You have a good point. A lot of my view has to do with my religious beliefs. Now given ahead of time you knew that the stranger was a rapist/murderer/molester/etc. I would think a lot more people would choose the pet.
However given the idea that you know nothing about this person, I think it comes down to personal preference.
I think maybe a more challenge to someone's morality would be if you had to choose between your kid or someone else's kid. There is no spoon.

Save my dog BUT then I would be really nice to every other person the rest of the day and make all their days to break even for the guy that died and I'd still have my dog

To the best of my knowledge, the bible does not mention it in a salvation sense. It does speak of them having the breath of life like humans. An animal's soul would not require redemption as a human's would. The bible definitely places humans as rulers over animals.
