335 brahs, are there serious reliability issues with the turbo cars? I'm looking at 335's but have only heard a bunch of crap about how piss poor they are in terms of staying out of the shop and on the road.
Would much rather have a 335 than a 328 but I can't have a car in the shop all the time."Some people spend their entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem."-President Ronald Reagan

The big issue with these were the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) crapping out. The latest version of the pump plus latest DME flash seems to have solved the problem. IIRC warranty on the pump has also been extended to 120k miles, I think the latest is the 446 pump.
Other than that, some have had issues with vanos solenoids, injectors, coils, LPFP, or LPFP sensor.
Main symptoms you want to keep an eye out for are misfires or long starting cranks. Part of normal maintenance also needs to include walnut blasting for the intake valves; DI engines have a problem with heavy carbon buildup, within 20-50k miles.Last edited by Snertz; 08-30-2013 at 09:04 AM.

I understand the serious issue of the fuel pumps but they are covered by BMW until 120k right? Now obviously you don't want the pump to quite while you are flying down the freeway because you may end up with a blown motor. But what I mean about maintenance is the other small things i.e. DI cleaning, coils, plugs, etc.
In short, will a 335 last with proper care and maintenance?"Some people spend their entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem."-President Ronald Reagan

in short yes it should just like any other car. if you dont abuse it and do regular maintenance it should unless its a lemon. you would be suprised at te number of people that buy luxury cars that dont do regular maintenance. i knew a guy with a 7 series that did not know anything about cars and thought that he bought a 100k car that he did not have to do as much maintenance on it. well guess what the car fell apart at just over 100km cause he didnt even do basic stuff like change oil or even rotate his tires lol. thats why if you buy used you should try and get one with records or see if they took care of it at all. not just look into kms and year. i know i went off on a tangent but anyway if you take care of a car it should last.

Should. Other than the HPFP issues, the car might have other issues but nothing that will leave you stranded. HPFP issues may leave you in limp mode and possible of being stranded, but there aren't any other chronic issues that I know of. Usually minor stuff.
If you are going used, there's a couple of things to know:
1. Only original owner can extend the factory warranty to 100k. This is a hit or miss one. More expensive, can't remember the prices offhand. Would need the owner to get it. If they already purchased it, it should play into your purchase decision.
2. You can extend the BMW free maintenance to 6 years/100k for around $1300. The dealer might try to sell it for more, but these are usually negotiable. I recommend getting this one as the later maintenance jobs are will add up more than this.
You can easily google search the comparable prices.

I have an '95 540i sitting on jack stands.
Here's my '91 535i 5 speed. Sold it last July. Was dumped on coil overs, couple bolt ons, exhaust. Was a fun car. Sucked gas like a fat kid drinks soda though.

those cars were junk to be honest.
BMW really did a ****ty job making them.
not only did they have a lot of mechanical problems, but the interior fell apart really quick. trims would fade, pieces would fall off.
the car itself isn't that fast. for a TT there wasn't much thrust when I gunned it. i was not impressed.RIP mainsqueeze530 1991-2013

Well said.
I'm on E90post all the time and IMO the cars are hit or miss. When looking at 335's, look through their service records. If they have a history of problems, obviously avoid it and vice versa. Sometimes you see guys with 30k miles having a ton of problems while a guy with 80k has had a clean slate.
I have had my 335 for about 1.5 years and 10k miles, have had ZERO issues whatsoever. Car has been a dream.Ο CHARGERS CREW Ο // Cubs // Blackhawks // Polska
