Yes it is. But politicians think they know everything and instill retarded regulations. Manufacturers need to meet these standards so they create **** like auto start stop for that extra 1 MPG. That way their government enforced fuel economy average across their lineup is satisfied.

Saw a pickup truck do this the other day then he proceeds to race off to the next light .25 miles away as fast as he could. I loled.

My F150 has the auto on/off. I hate it. There is a button I can use to turn it off manually but I have to hit it every time I start the truck, which I do. Anyone know how I can permanently turn it off which still driving in normal mode?

car engines dont use that much at idle, i had a scangage and it would say that i had like 20 hours left of idling before it runs out of gas.

Can do a general ballpark estimate:

Say 5 minutes at a stop light, which is pretty long. 5/60 * 0.5 = 0.0417 gallons used idling at the light. Say gas is $2.50 a gallon, you would save 10.4 cents turning off your vehicle at the light.

That is for a large engine, for a compact it is like 1/2 to 1/4 of that.

You can do the same thing with house lights, people that freak out turning off the lights or whatever, you could see that it costs pennies to leave them on for a bit longer.

A car consist of many parts and system. So it doesn't just "die". In this case we are talking about the start/stop system, which consist of the 12v battery, a beefed up starter, and a computer board that controls everythang.

Those parts should be fairly cheap to replace. And they should extend the life of the engine, the main component being the cylinder wall, which when worn down will cause the car to burn oil and pollute, which means its time for a new car, which is around 300k miles on a cars made today.

My mustang gt has pressure limited oil pump so the oil pump doesn't have as much parasitic loss. I only see 15-20 psi of oil pressure most of the time regardless of temp.

I'm not sure that's a great system. Its basically opposite of what you stated, which brings me to my point. Automakers are bowing down to the EPA over consumer value. These motors should last 200k easy but that's not likely with all the epa bullchit going on.

only time there is any wear on any bearing surface in general is during start up, when the bearing starts to move but hasn't built up enough speed to have hydrodynamic lubrication that supports the load and fully separates the moving parts. you cant say that there is no real impact, you are increasing the number of "wear" events in a car by a factor of 10+ combine that with losing oil pressure at every light and its easy to tell its not a good idea for engine life.

This is part of the reason why I love my 2017 Infiniti QX50. For an SUV that new it's gloriously free of all the eco and automated safety bullchit you see in cars these days. No auto on/off, no lane change assist, no bullchit.
