The car community hates heavy cars and trucks, but I'm fascinated with them

Anybody can make a lightweight car fast. Doesn't require as much power and doesn't require as much money. But a 4500lb+ car, truck, or wagon that can haul an entire family and gear and still beat you in a 1/4 mile? Sign me up, I'd like one of those space ships. I'd love a Durango with the 1000 horsepower Hellephant engine. Or an Audi S8 with fully upgraded turbos, that's definitely a space ship.

Some just simply like the challenge of making something fast that isnt normally suppose to be fast... And I do get the appeal... because I have done it.

But the harsh reality is.... big heavy $hit is extremely hard on parts , even aftermarket parts that are suppose to hold it. The amount of money you have to put into it just to half ass make it handle & stop is ridiculous.. and thats if you do the work yourself. If you dont have the tools or skill set then you are paying a shop to do it and that just tripled the price.

On the flip side...making a car lighter is typically free.99 until you get into racecar / tin can territory and improves every single aspect of performance instantly

As I'm getting older I'm really starting to like the idea of super powerful tank like cars. Just rolling in comfort decimating the lightly modified WRX's and STI's I see everywhere in a 700+HP SUV sounds fun. On the street no one cares if you can't make a turn on Laguna Seca.

Jeep Trackhawk and Durango Hellcat would be right up your alley. Both can be modded to 800hp+ easy. Or if you want luxury you get an Audi S7 or RS7, couple mods put you in 700hp territory. And I didn't mention AWD, so you're beating everything on the streets outside of possible supercars....unless you mod.

Only downside is these things cost a lot of money LOL. You could get a slightly used S7 with extended warranty.

It's easier and cheaper to make a heavy car fast, than it is to make a lightweight car. Just like it's easy to make a thread on Misc without putting much thought into it.

You can make a Durango faster than a 400hp/500hp turbo Civic for cheaper? What about a 3 series with the N54?

    I'm asking you,

Can you make heavy truck or car faster and at a cheaper price than a lightweight built car, e.a. Civic, Miata, 3 Series, 370z? If you had $10k for mods, which would be faster, the 370z or the Durango?

Reminds me of that recent Car Wow drag race video of an M5 Competition with exhaust and tune. 9 second car on prepped track and very low 10's on street all day.

I've always had a thing for fast and sporty sedans that handle surprisingly well.

Too bad almost none of those types of cars come in manual trans anymore, but they're still awesome.

I used to think they were stupid but I find myself more and more impressed by these SUVs that perform similar to sports cars (Stelvio Quad, X M's, Trackhawk, Urus, etc...)

Would dig a two car setup with a big, comfortable, and powerful daily like a tuned M5 Comp, X5 M, RS7, Panamera Turbo S, etc... and then a lighter weight weekend toy built for being a hooligan like a Z06, Lotus Evora, GT4, etc...

    This

Literally just throw a better engine in it, build components durable enough to handle the power, and slap some huge summer tires on it. Meanwhile lightweight cars have to be engineered more carefully with aluminum, carbon fiber etc components

I get the appeal though. If only Dodge had nice interiors, it would be nice to own something like a Hellcat
