After several weeks, I’ve concluded I’m now worse then I was at white belt...

i know those feels. i thought i was getting better but it turned out that the higher belts were taking it easy on me. the difference between a no strip blue belt to a 4 strip is pretty big.

Has anyone ever taken classes from a Gracie Academy from Helio's lineage? I'm interested in the Gracie system as it focuses on techniques for practical street self-defense. I noticed alot of BJJ schools nowadays mostly teach techniques that are used in tournament competition.

Moved to a new gym in this last month and am feeling very humbled. Im a 4 stripe white belt but these whites are seriously good - which excites me as it shows the level of the teacher.

I'll be attending my 1st no-Gi class tonight since the passing of my brother in December and ill be wearing one of his rashies got a hold of his Gi last night too so they're very much prized possessions that I plan on wearing from here on out.

Resurrecting this thread for anyone training.

Update: went back to under JT Torres and have been getting wrecked but having fun. His younger guys are no joke. I also started wearing my Apple watch for fun. Average workout burns about 850 - 1000 cals for 90 minutes but the majority during the last 40 minutes. Heart rate pegging at 182.

Hope everyone is safe and able to train.

Back in April was coming up into deep half / dog fight during a nice flow roll with another chill technical colored belt, still not sure exactly went wrong but my knee snapped / popped. MRI showed high grade (less than 25% left) tear of my LCL, ruptured whatever the smaller muscle and tendon are under it, and torn cartilage (likely prior condition, I'm old, everything hurts).

Surgery would have been remove / replace LCL and drill in new bone anchors into my femur and tibia, nothing they could do with ruptured muscle / tendon or cartilage. 6-9 month recovery if body took well to new bone anchors and cadaver LCL.

Decided to go Stem Cell Therapy route as I responded well to it when I blew out my shoulder (f*cking volleyball) 6 years ago. Been a month since last round of injections, and go in for 5 week post procedure follow up tomorrow. Hoping ultrasound shows things are healing nicely. Started doing half ass warm up and drills a couple weeks ago. Being totally off the mats for 4 months was BRUTAL.

Keep on the path ladies and gents!

awfukbye! Everyone pretends half guard is so safe, but I strained my hamstring in lockdown this spring and had to take a month off. I'm glad the therapy is working for you. Fingers crossed.

Still here, lol. Congrats on the purple and your competition, I will be cooking at brown belt for a while as I don't compete. Oddly, I feel pretty happy staying at this rank.

I heard MG moved to HI, who is running classes? Schreiner and Diniz?

I like the Kimura Trap but if you are on the bottom half you can easily get submitted while attempting it.

My favorite transition would be from side control or knee on belly and let my opponent roll into either a clock choke or eventually bow and arrow.

Why are you happy at brown, ugliest belt/10 :P

Yes, Diniz and Schreiner are helming, but don't discount Scott Kaplan. He's a genius. Or Joel. We have a whole stable of instructors, so luckily never depended wholly on MG... he's coming back for promotions in November, so we'll see then. [Promos not exciting for me except that I'll see my gf get a stripe--I asked to be graded as a competitor, which means probably I get to have the full 2 years at purple i.e. 1 stripe this promo and 1 next].

As a purple belt, my entire game is transitions, I feel. I think right now I'm enjoying playing closed guard. I have a whole interlocked system of reverse kimura --> triangle --> arm bar --> baratoplata --> omoplata linking in and out of each other, along with the arm drag to back take.

And like Clockbro, when I go simple top game, I like the plain old bow and arrow from s mount--I get into s mount by switching sides off a knee on belly when they try to shrimp away.

what i like to do is turn my hips directly between the legs so it shifts from butterfly to regular guard and I work from there

or here are three other variations

And like Clockbro, when I go simple top game, I like the plain old bow and arrow from s mount--I get into s mount by switching sides off a knee on belly when they try to shrimp away.

my mind is completely blown - i need to see this inaction because it sounds like grinding the opponent out

Sup brahs. I finally mustered up the courage to give BJJ a try about a month ago and did two workouts which were great! Unfortunately I injured myself after the second workout and strained my AC joint. Not really sure how it happened, as the pain started to slowly creep up after we finished. It got pretty bad, to the point it woke me up the next morning and I had to take painkillers. I still feel some pain and can't really sleep on my right side. It sucks, because it's been about a month now and I'm still not fully recovered. I did continue to go to the gym and do my regular fitness workouts and I guess that kind of slows the healing process, but I didn't want to stop all physical activity.

Anyways, I have two questions for now:

    1. Should I wait until the pain is completely gone or can I go train BJJ again? I'm afraid of having a bigger tear, as the consequences can be quite severe (could need an operation, up to a year off).
    2. The BJJ gym I went to has the following structure for the workouts: 20 min. warmup, 5 min. instructor showing technique #1 and then 5 min. training with a partner, then the same for technique #2 After that we roll for about 15-20 min.

Regarding point number 2, I felt like there's not enough time dedicated on learning the techniques. Not sure if that's the standard way in most (BJJ) gyms, but I have some martial arts experience and we usually spend a lot more time on learning the techniques. Just wondering if that's normal or if I should go and see how's it's like in another BJJ gym?

    Thanks.

First , always check with your doctor on some of the injuries you have could possibly be serious or could be prevented with possible rest.
however- good work on going to class!

We have all been there with injuries that nag - for example, in my last class on Monday, my fingernail was ripped off by someone spazzing out when I grabbed their gi. It happens. So, until you feel up to your usual self, go to class, warm up the best you can and drill, drill, drill. do the move set up of the day, take your time, understand the new concepts but be very very clear with the people you are working with you are hurt and CAN NOT go hard and wont roll.
Someone might offer to 'flow roll' with you, which means they will do no pressure move for move rolling ; i would only suggest to do that unless you trust this person as most of the time when people offer that that turn it up as the round comes to a close.

    hope it helps!

rolling is overrated in my opinion especially as a white belt. My protocol now is to learn technique, do the drilling, do positional training, and do very light flow rolling (if someone does not flow roll LIGHT, I don't train with them). Then for about 2 days a week I go 90-100% where im throwing everything into hard rolling. I learn more from the technique/drilling but in the training im finding what I need to work on, what doesn't work for me, and refining and refining etc. As a white belt you know NOTHING so just focus on technique and not getting injured until your a blue belt.

    Agreed

Problem is finding a good training partner that also wants to spend a majority time drilling. Everyone just wants to roll because it’s so damn fun.

    Hi

I love to pass butterfly guard, there are a few techniques I use but the most important concept for me to pass is to
    1. Get the guard player flat on his back
    2. Get his heels as close to his butt as possible

In order to get there, as soon as I see him going for butterfly and put his feet between my thigh I will scoot up as quickly as possible and drive my head into his chest. Once he is on his back I will try and trap his legs between my thighs and elbows. Depending on where his legs are there are a few passes I use.

Just remember to keep your hips really heavy, you can do this by balancing on your toes when you are on top and tilting your pelvis forward

I've been working a lot more with passing via the body lock. I have a wrestling background, so working from heavy top pressure feels better for me.

    Yeah, this
I like the headstand/half cartwheel after I grab the ankle around the leg once it's stapled
or hitting the knee and converting to over-under
or trapping the bent leg between my legs and then backstepping

Do it now (this week) or before you know it you’ll be 37 and wishing you started at 35

Just check out both gyms (should have free trials) and pick the one you like
