I'm fully planning on throwing calories to the wind next month when the county fairs hit.
So long, cutting! Hello, sugar coma!

I hate to break this to you, but there's a 99% chance you have salmonella all over your hands and your kitchen counters right now.
Now that you mention it, the cut's scheduled to end right around the same time as the county fair...good day to kick off a new bulk."Blessed be the Lord my rock, who trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle." - Psalm 144:1
Also, taxation is theft.

ROFL yeah, hitting the iron has two meanings around here.
I don't smith for a living, but some friends and I do it as a hobby and work some trade shows, make mostly fireplace stuff and BBQ tools but we've done some major pieces like gates and bed frames as well. First time I actually hit a piece of hot steel and saw the heat patterns in it, then watched the steel move away from the hammer blow, I was hooked.
Oddly, the name Singe comes from something else entirely. Now cutting: Got a little more squishy than I wanted, heading down to 160lbs and seeing how things look.

i went to the fair twice this past week.
i ahd a strategy going in so i was pretty good.
I ate my lunch in the parking lot so i was not hungry. First trip we split a small kettle corn.
Second trip we stayed longer then planned so had the biggest corn dog I have ever seen. damn thing cost 411 and the stick was about the size of a flagpole.
We split that too.
Ended up losing 2 lbs for the week so i was happy with that for sure.
Here are some calorie levels in fair foods.

My daughter posted some pics of the Del Mar Fair on her ******** page. I remember the cinnamon rolls being the best I've ever eaten (outside of my own of course...).
FlaIronMind, brother, I'm gonna be hitting up da sausage and peppers like a madman! So, yeah...there will be protein mixed in with my carb coma."Blessed be the Lord my rock, who trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle." - Psalm 144:1

Actually yes: For starters there is ABANA, Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America: http://www.abana.org/
Also Anvilfire: http://www.anvilfire.com/ which is a great site, lots of projects and information for beginners.
There is a pretty decent international community of smiths who share videos on Youtube as well. I'm pretty good honestly, but far from a master and being able to watch a demonstration from an awesome smith in someplace like Finland is incredible.
You can also look for local groups, like in Houston we have HABA, and they have gatherings called where folks go to learn from each other and socialize, sometimes work on bigger projects that are difficult for a single person.
It's not a huge community by any means, even the lifting communities (as opposed to weight loss or fitness which are huge) dwarf it, but it has a heavy Internet presence and a lot of people interested in recording knowledge and keeping the craft alive. It has been getting a mild boost lately with an influx of people interested in knife making and then some survivalist looking for a trade skill for "when society comes to an end".
Finally: Those old guys were far tougher than I, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7bnffUHYUI is a rather cool video, and I can tell you from experience the heat involved in what they were doing.Last edited by Singe03; 06-18-2013 at 07:36 AM.

In a moment of complete disregard for everything healthy, I got to try the deep fried Guinness last year, weird, but not bad at all. I did NOT like the deep fried butter though.

I'm an amusement park junkie and but somehow I usually find something more or less healthy to eat at most places. However, I did really really want to try chocolate coated bacon at the San Diego State Fair last year. And it was awesome.
