Why do some people believe mental illness is a myth? Srs.

I get the impression that many psychologists believe that there is no biological basis to mental illness. How is it possible for a patient to "reason" their way out of a broken mind/brain (depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc.). Why are psychologists so anti-science?

This is what I think: Social/behavioral therapy helps to manage individual symptoms, medication helps to treat the underlying disease.

Medication is also volunteering yourself to government exploitation and potential mind control tactics. If you're depressed and you realize it, you really think the only way to control it is with a drug? That's ludicrous and dangerous. The power of the mind > prescription drugs

There is no doubt mental illness exists. Of course some people fake it to get out of responsibilities or to get drugs or whatever, but not everyone. I'm sure tons of posters here have family members affected by mental illness.

psych major checking in. most theories that give no credit to biological processes were formed before we really knew anything about the brain. medication rarely, if ever, treats the actual disease.

edit: also never met a psych who was "anti-science". quite the opposite really.

That's the point of mental illness though, the mind becomes so broken that it's very difficult to impossible to control by the patient.

Let's be honest, things like ADD and ADHD are basically nonexistent in reality, but tons of young kids, especially energized boys, are diagnosed with it. Drugs are not meant to be the crutch a person's life stands on, but it often is for simplicity's sake. Drugs only mask a biological reaction created in the body, they don't do anything to cure a mental disease.

psychologist checking in, most psychologists believe that there is an underlieing predisposition for mental illness (depression, schizophrenia, anything really) and a stressful life event 'wakes up the beast', meaning for example that the death of a close relative leads to depression if the person is biologically predisposed.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diathes...3stress_model#

And the more symptoms a patient has, the more likely psychologists will send them to a psychiatrist who can give them medication

cuz it's hard to sympathise with someone who shows no physical signs of illness, who hasn't gone through anything that most would consider seriously traumatising, and who seemingly has been given the same chances (or more) than you in life

tbh i'm bitter cuz my older brother was clinically diagnosed with depression, was put on anti-depressants and went to psychologists and all that chit.. 10 years later he's still the same disrespectful, pseudo-intellectual lazy POS who throws away every opportunity he's given... oh but he's "depressed" so it's not his fault

Mental illness is a socially constructed concept. There are deviations from what is normal in brain chemistry, but calling all deviations "illnesses" just seems like they're trying to make a few bucks. nomsayin?

Obviously, things like aspergers where you are a savant in something shouldn't be classified as an illness. It's a shame that not many other people are able to have the intellect that those people have. Are they mentally dificient, or are we?

And the more symptoms a patient has, the more likely psychologists will send them to a psychiatrist who can give them medication

Using a ****ty childhood as an excuse to feel sorry for yourself is unacceptable for an adult. But, in this day and age, it is becoming more acceptable, sadly enough. Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

Mum had early onset of Schizo and the meds/counselling helped before it led to being full blown Schizo... She still gets anxiety attacks, paranoia, drowsiness because of the meds and stuff like that but as long she takes her meds she is relatively fine. No zombie like state either (she was in the state initially) but is a lot better.

Personally I'm no fan of pumping all kinds of drugs into your system, but I'm gonna have to say that if its a mental illness then you better be on meds because your mind turning on you is no joke and I disregard all those *******s who say **** like ''oh but its all mental toughness/will power etc''.

Apparently this thing is genetic so I guess you could say I'm ''predisposed'' to getting it ... It's one of the reasons I'm not too keen on getting high and doing drugs all the time because they could trigger the disease ...... And I actually think it does because some of my family members and Sister are constantly getting high on weed/party drugs and they seem pretty fukked up to me (at least my sister is lol).

Obviously, things like aspergers where you are a savant in something shouldn't be classified as an illness. It's a shame that not many other people are able to have the intellect that those people have. Are they mentally dificient, or are we?
First you say mental illness is socially constructed, and in the same sentence you claim that it's deviation from normal neurochemistry? Doesn't make much sense to me.

    I disagree.

While I do get where you're coming from and I'm no fan of how the media has made suicide look ''cool'' these days.

Suicide shouldnt be taken lightly at all, it's not a black and white situation. You have to be in a really fukked up state of mind and dark place to go through the steps of taking your own life. I mean it's one thing to play with the thoughts of killing yourself ... But to go ahead and actually do it ......shieeeeeeeeeet.

he's saying people have deviations in neurochemistry, and people have deemed these deviations 'illness' to make money off it.
