I went to this surgical conference last year. Lots of guys that had done really well for themselves. We were all sitting around talking and it was funny how jaded everyone was. I suppose it was a pretty high percentage because they were guys that spent a lot of time working, but their main point of advice was "never get divorced". I've heard so many horror stories it makes me want to be extra sure before I propose.

But I suppose most everyone is sure in that moment, sometimes life just gets in the way.

@joregorn - agreed, it may sound funny "i got this advice from some guy on the internet", but at the same time, we all talk to these people on a daily basis/first name basis, and a lot of them have life experience that some of us don't.

learn to love your partner's curious indiscretions; their follies are what make them human and the person that you fell in love with

i tend to forget this from time to time

My best friends dad just went through this

He had a huge house (over 5000sq/feet/3 stories/4 car garage/etc), audi, escalade and a jag, his wife divorced him last summer, now she lives in the huge house, she doesnt work or anything, he pays the bills, he pays her alimony, and he lives in a 1 bedroom apt now cause its all he can afford.

Absolutely true. And a sense of humor in regards to most things helps as well. If my wife screws up, she knows it's fair game for me to be a dink about it. (Within reason)

Really depends on the financial situation of both going into the marriage. Also keep in mind a prenup only protects what you bring in to the marriage, not anything earned/acquired during the marriage

Going through one right now and it's costing me a damn fortune for the settlement and I'll be responsible for two years of spousal maintenance. Either get a prenuptial or make sure you marry a sugar momma.

i know...don't marry someone unless you have 100% trust in them.

i know deep down that no matter WHAT comes, my wife would never leave. she always has my best interest at heart, as i have hers.

it may take a long time to find that person, but they are out there. i feel like people don't "screen" their potential mates well enough before getting a ring on.

discuss EVERYTHING with them...religion, politics, children/child rearing...figure out who your significant other will be in 20-30 years down the road, and not the hot 18-25 year old they are now. if you have disagreements during these discussions, you should be able to either come to a compromise/agreement, and move on. if not, she aint the girl for you.
