If these plates aren't the most beautiful thing in the world, I don't know what is. Every time I see them I think ... one day.
How well does the chrome finish hold up against wear and scratches and time? I'm at the point where everything I add to my home gym is something I want to be able to pass down to my son some day. I'd rather own and then pass on a set of truly beautiful plates than a set of practical urethane coated plates.

I will preface this by saying I do not own any of these beautiful chrome plates, but if I were buying something to pass down to my kids, I would opt for a classic Ivanko OM series plate, Ivanko revolvers (iron), vintage Yorks (if you can locate some), or new York Legacy plates. I just feel like with the chrome, you would have to "be careful" with them in order to keep them looking nice. It's definitely possible, but there's just something awesome about iron plates that show some use on them.

I've got a mix of used (>5 year) and new ivanko chrome plates. Even with the used ones, the chrome is holding up great, no concerns whatsoever.
The wear and tear on my plates is actually on the painted part of the plates. I suspect I could touch it up myself if it ever became a real concern. But, I didn't expect to maintain them at a museum level of quality. I'm sure I'll be able to hand them down to my son when I'm done with them in ~40 years...[]---[] Equipment Crew #73 []---[]

Really depends on use. We bought a couple sets. One had been worked hard for a couple years by a small gym but always on platforms or mats and the owner was picky about people who used them without collars so they rattled against each other, or who treated them badly. They didn't look new but looked really clean. The other set had been used by a home gym owner who said he never threw them down (I do believe him) but who deadlifted and on a concrete floor. The floor chewed them up a lot more. He also leaned plates (concrete floor again) against the legs of his bench press stand. Same kind of issue.
We looked at getting a couple other pairs from seaside areas and we didn't see any significant corrosion from being near saltwater. We didn't take them only because of price. So overall, it comes down to how you treat them.
