I haven't started to hit the abs a whole lot until this year because I want to get them a bit thicker and bring out the lower abdominals
this is from last year prior to starting a lot of ab/core work, at this point I wasn't hitting them directly. I maintain at fairly low bf% year round though and you could see them decently I think

I have never trained abs directly in my 4 years of lifting . I'm going to start soon .. Don't like my ab genetics though . My lower abs are invisible . Need to develop them

this is me in june 2011 a day or two before my first bb show. not a single ab was trained.
this is june 2012. still no ab training until starting ~8 weeks before show day. those last 8 weeks i put in some serious ab work. def saw a HUGE difference in tightness and definition.
lighting sucked dick though at my second show :/ made my legs look like pure chit, and i dont have much to brag about in the first place

I have terrible ab genetics, only in the greatest of lights can I see a 4 pack. I am at like 13% bodyfat though.

I am also finding that hitting my abs hard prior to competition is working wonders for their appearance and development. I've incorporated abs a lot into my normal workout routines over this last year for this exact reason...keep it up bro glad to see someone else who competes hah

I posted my current abs up above, but here is ~two weeks out from my show. At this point I had been training abs for 4 weeks. Just did 2x per week, pick 2 exercises and superset them for 3 sets. (one upper, one lower)
I really think abs is mostly genetic. Frank Zane did 1000s of reps a day I believe and his waist wasn't big by any means.Use coupon code BEARD for 5% off your order at truenutrition.com
