Syriankid the problem with our society is that sex is no longer special anymore. It has become an instinctive act of lust and self gratification , the heart and soul no longer matter in the equation. People usually freak out when they find out that I'm 45 and a virgin, but I'm equally shocked that they could give their body so easily to someone in a short term relationship that really won't last.
The 3 major theistic religions all stress no sex before marriage. We you share the body without the heart and soul your essentially separating the most important part of yourselves . We were meant for more, much more.

The formula to get this happiness back is to get back to traditional family values.
Another thing society has forgotten about is the practice of agape love.
Eros is romantic love.
If Eros isn't grounded in agape then it becomes a feeling just of this world.
Divine love lasts forever earthly love comes and goes.

The three major religions stress no sex before marriage because in the good ol' Bible days when Jesus, Mohammed, Abraham and Moses walked the Earth, it was believed that virgins were more likely to give men viable offspring, and the more virgins one could purchase/trade for the better. Our modern notions of love and romance are just that, modern - ancient marriage was considered utilitarian, a means to an end, and love and romance were reserved for friends and people that the person was not married to. It is only in recent times that we have developed the ideal of marrying and having romance and love with that - and we've been rewarded with a blistering divorce rate.
There are other factors at play, too - like porn and finances and the ability of people to live within their own means by themselves. But let's not kid ourselves by acting like the Abrahamic faiths hold some secret wisdom to successful marriage. The Biblical ideal marriage is nothing like what modern marriage is.ignore list: MuscleXtreme

Those aren't sour grapes those are cold sores.
But I see your point. Promiscuity is psychologically and socially destructive. But on the other hand, it's so much fun. There are so many gorgeous women who cares about the long-term consequences? You have to weigh the trade-offs but by the time you have the vantage point of hind-sight it's too late to reverse the trend.
By the way, these threads are a good representation of society. There are vocal and visceral reactions against the idea that promiscuity is bad or should be curtailed. But there are so many secret reps from people who agree yet don't want to speak up.*** There is no one free of all need, of whom all else are in absolute need, but God ***

So you think that promiscuity is a fulfilling lifestyle without consequences and that people who disagree just wish they could participate but can't?
If you know college life, you know that it's not hard to be promiscuous, unless you have elbows-too-pointy misc standards.*** There is no one free of all need, of whom all else are in absolute need, but God ***

Wow SK, so cold. Without consequences? Of course not. I'm out there martyring myself, to help people in need. Taking untold risks to bring a little bit of comfort into a sea of the wretched, tormented by their loneliness, unable to reach out and connect to the people around them. Not hard? You try getting out there and infusing a complete stranger with such love that they come away a better, un-embittered person. How about elevating the bond between two heterosexual girls by acting as a conduit for their feelings for each other? Your shallow view of the work I put in for the betterment of all is damaging and hurtful. The next time you're off courting some chaste, muslim girl maybe you should consider the possibility that she might not be so personable or insouciant had someone like me not at some previous point pumped her full of self confidence and a sense of receptivity.

Things that are lots of fun for a short while are virtually never meant to be long term fulfilling. Whether it's sex, boozing on a Saturday night, a roller coaster ride, or watching a great movie. Things that require work and self-discipline are the things that lead to long term fulfillment, like working hard at a job, helping out others in need, running a marathon, etc.
That said, there needn't be consequences of promiscuity for part of a person's life. Obviously they aren't going to be living college party style at age 50. As hormones calm down, so does behavior usually. I do get a kick out of the article, treating this all as if it's something new. It's not.
And lettuce beef cereal, I say much of the divorce rate is because we view nothing as good enough. Here in first world countries, we're never content with things being as great as they are. It has permeated every aspect of our lives. Expectations are so high that when we start having rocky times in our marriages, we instinctively say to ourselves "I'll bet there's someone else out there better for me" because every other standard of our living is consistently improving on a mass scale. Material possessions are constantly improving, so we supplant that about our relationships. If it's not great, it's terrible. Let's not forget people live much longer. Our time horizon has changed in the last few hundred years. 500 years ago you got married at age 15 because you couldn't wait to have sex and be okay with the church, and you almost certainly died by age 50. Now if you get married at age 25, you realize you'll probably be with that person 60-70 years. That's a long horizon to consider.Last edited by frankenstein78; 03-12-2013 at 09:34 PM.

Yes, average length of old timey marriage was probably about 7 years until one of them died of some vile disease, or war or starvation or childbirth. Obviously divorce goes up when it becomes legal and people can expect to be together for 6 times that period or whatever. That's 6 old timey marriages and the neighbours won't hang you from the nearest tree for getting divorced.
Increased material comfort and quick fix mentality as you mention must also play a part. When you're breaking your backs 14 hours a day, you're probably not thinking too much about whether your spouse is emotionally supportive of your career or whatever.Last edited by Mr Beer; 03-13-2013 at 02:34 PM.

Precisely. We cannot apply old social norms to modern life, as there is almost nothing in common with just a few hundred years ago. Most everyone died decades before now. Well over half the population of the world were farmers, working from sun up to sun down. When the sun went down, the day was over. No machines to plow fields, let alone fly us to Paris or Miami for the weekend. Lots of free time is a relatively new concept in the course of human history. Travel is sooo much more convenient than 100 years ago, let alone 1000 years ago. Just think of how many more people we meet in our lives than the average person did during the Colonial period, let alone 1000 years ago. I guarantee I interact with more people within 1-2 weeks than the average person did in their entire lifetimes before the year 1850. I have more women flirt with and/or offer sex to me in 1 year than a man considered a player probably did in his lifetime 100 years ago. I'm not even bragging with that, it's a matter of sheer numbers of people we interact with now compared to then.
200 years ago, even if you lived in the world's largest cities, you probably almost never went more than a 2 mile radius from your home. If you lived on a farm then, you probably only even said 'hello' to 100-300 people in your lifetime. And yet people of the past were so morally superior? More like, they had no choices. It is not a matter of 'moral degredation,' it is a matter of opportunity that did not used to exist. I'll bet I interact with 5 times as many people as my parents even ever did when they were young.America needs fewer laws, not more prisons. – James Bovard

I lol'd, but seriously that's because we both see how opportunistic it is for guys to engage in promiscuity (or pimping). Sure you're just a capitalist, meeting client needs with products they're willing to pay for. How can that be wrong? People never make poor life choices. On top of that, everyone should learn from personal mistakes and not from the collective wisdom of people who have been burned.*** There is no one free of all need, of whom all else are in absolute need, but God ***
