no one will care or probably even notice you. people go to work on their physique, and that is what they'll be focused on. no one goes into a gym for the first time and just destoys weights. you gotta start somewhere. now, that being said, if you go for a month, and your arms start getting a little bigger or more defined, don't stand in front of the db rack flexing for minutes at a time. I have seen this happen, and cannot guarantee your safety in the event that your newly discovered triceps is getting in someone's way.

I'd rather see someone curling in the squat rack than squatting. I know with curling, they'll be done within 3-4 sets. Squatting... no telling. I know when I squat, I camp out in the rack. I can spend my entire leg session in the squat rack.

I bet all the whiny asses who piss and moan about curlers in the squat rack would much rather have me curling for 3 sets than 45 minutes of legs.

That's because when you curl you only do 3-4 sets. When you're squatting it can take, like Chazzy pointed out, 45 minutes. I smile when people curl in the rack...I'm pizzed when they squat in the rack.

as long as you follow the proper gym etiquette whether you are new or long time lifter, you will be fine.
just because someone's been lifting doesnt mean they have excuses to curl in the squat rack.

I've never heard anybody say anything negative about anyone in the gym, ever. When I see really skinny people or overweight people, I always get a little more encouraged, and I think "good for them, I hope they keep at it".

If anybody gives you a hard time they're moronic. You going into the gym and doing legit lifts(no matter how light) is a lot better than 95% of Americans and deserves more respect.

Also, most gym veterans are willing to answer a few questions for you, so long as you don't start to annoy them or distract them from their workout for too long.

I had your problem and still kinda do. Except i'm 27 now. In high school I was embarrassed to touch the bench. All I did was squats and leg workouts because I was stronger than others in the gym in that area. I didn't go to the gym consistently but over the years I did less than 20 sets of bench press (so little I can estimate and would bet money that I'm right). Now I struggle with that but at least I'm doing it. Watch form vids on youtube and start with whatever weight you can push, be consistent and add more weight every so often. Try the Stronglifts program...I just started but I like the idea of adding on weight every week. You might even surprise yourself of how much you can actually lift.

I don't think much of anybody in the gym. Even if they don't know what they're doing I give them props for at least making an effort to better themselves. If somebody judges you for being new to the gym they're idiots.

I bet all the whiny asses who piss and moan about curlers in the squat rack would much rather have me curling for 3 sets than 45 minutes of legs.

My dorm has a gym in it that I could go to, but my anxiety is making me really reluctant to go there.
Basically, how do I stop being a pussy? I really need to squat but my max is gonna be like 120. It's embarrassing LOL
I wouldn't consider myself anything special but I try to keep to myself and do what I need to do. If someone in your shoes were to ask me a few questions, I would gladly take a few minutes to talk to them. I'm not going to lie and say I don't notice what other people are doing, especially the more "unique" ways to move weights some people invent but I don't go up to them and tell them they are wrong ( generally people who feel superior will do this, or if they think you will hurt yourself, but I have guys come up to me telling me to use a belt because I'm using xxx weight when they have no business giving advice).

Screw that at least I could ask to work in with the squats ( I usually offer to change all the weights around to sweeten the deal). What bothers me about the curls is they take the full sized barbell and put 10's or 5's on it. If you are going to do barbell curls with 60-80 lbs, and your gym has either the prebuilt short bars or an adjustable shortbar you might find near the preacher racks and EZ curl bars, use those instead as I don't have preloaded bars on a rack anywhere that go from 300+.

I think what bothers me the most about it is the need to actually use the hooks in the squat rack to rack these bars when you are using such low weights that it could easily be taken outside the rack/cage like a deadlift and just placed on the gorund between sets

I train in a Powerlifting/Strongman gym, though we are open to everyone. When we get newcomers who are humble, hardworking, inquisitive, and receptive to advice, we don't care how much they lift or how new they are, we treat them like one of us and help them with technique, nutrition, etc. If someone comes in with an attitude or does stupid sh!t, they'll get laughed out of the dungeon.

If they know what they're doing and are making progress -- utmost respect because I was once there.

If they don't know what they're doing and don't make any real effort -- nothing, I ignore and/or barely notice them.
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

The weirdest ones are the dudes who deadlift outside/in front of the power rack. Why cant you just do them on the inside? Makes no sense.

I don't know if you're referring to the same thing, but in my gym there is room behind the squat racks (which are against walls). I deadlift behind (in front of?) them so that someone else can use the rack for (preferably) squats or overhead pressing. I won't get started on people who occupy the rack for dumb ****... the worst I saw was 65 lb BB front raises.

I should add that there isn't much floor space to do them anywhere else.
