Monday, November 11th: Deads, Hams, Back

Wassup, iron people? Hope everyone is up for another week of lifting, living, and other stuff we go through. Weekend was good, and I rested up some to anticipate another week of heavy lifting. Technically this should be a deload week, but I am forgoing this deload since I'll be taking at least two weeks off come the end of December for vacation time with the family. Please, I really don't feel the need for one right now anyway, so I guess it all works.

This mornings session went pretty well. I felt strong on the deadlifts and was able to pull the increased weight without issue. Kinda felt beastly as my form felt spot on! Sometimes feeling cocky ain't a bad thing

    The work:

    DEADS, HAMSTRINGS, BACK

    DEADS

    1 x 5 @ 65% 1RM
    1 x 5 @ 75% 1RM
    1 x 6 @ 85% 1RM

Man these felt great! The one rep max got bumped up 10lbs, which it does at the beginning of each phase, and the load felt very comfortable

    RDL'S

    4 x 10

I kept the weight the same as last week on the first two sets, then upped it by 5 lbs for the last 2 sets, and was still able to get the same number of reps. Cool.

    GOOD MORNINGS

    2 x 14

    LF ROWS

    3 x 8
    1 x 8

Same weight as before, with one total rep more. Didn't feel overly strong on these, as I kind of seemed to loose a bit once I got to this point. I am sure doing deads before didn't help.

    CHIN GRIP PULLDOWN

    2 x 13

And that's how the week started. I think it's going to be a very good week, if this morning was any indication!

Thanks, Storm. Besides injuries, I haven't seen too many good reasons not to include squats in someones leg routine.

Tuesday, November 12: Chest & Arms

You know, they say Monday is actually Universal Bench Day. I thumb my nose and bench on Tuesday. That'll show 'em!

I got out of the house a bit late this morning, due to just getting up a little late plus having to defrost the car after the rain/snow mixture from last night. I still was able to get my whole routine done in about an hour, but I wasn't able to get to the complex I was wanting to do at the end.

    Today's fun:

    CHEST & ARMS

    BENCH

    1 x 5 @ 65% 1RM
    1 x 5 @ 75% 1RM
    1 x 7 @ 85% 1RM

I ended up being stronger then I thought I was going to be. I was very happy to pump out 7 reps the last set. Yeah buddy!

    INC BENCH

    2 x 9
    2 x 8

Reps went down the last two sets because I upped the weight by 5 lbs. I probably was able to get 9 reps on the third set, but I was wanting to save so I could get 8 the last set.

    EZ CURL

    1 x 8
    1 x 9
    1 x 10

Added 1 total rep over last week.

    ALT DB CURL

    2 x 14

Same number of reps over last week. I can't remember if the last rep of the second set was maybe harder last week or not. We'll see how next week goes.

    CLOSE GRIP BP

    3 x 9

I added 1 more rep this week, so an improvement. Maybe next week I'll try adding weight on the last set.

    CABLE PRESSDOWN

    1 x 12
    1 x 22

I started with the same weight on the second set, but once I failed at 12 reps, I performed the remaining reps as a drop set.

In and out in about an hour. My arms are feeling pretty pumped right now, and I already feel my chest growing sore. So, I suppose that means it was a good session

Wednesday, November 13: Quads & Calfs

The following takes place between 4:55am and 6pm

The week rolls along, and today was a day for squats! Normally I'd take today off, but situations dictate that I lift today and take tomorrow off. It happens, life goes on.

Good session today. I seemed to hit a small wall on the squats 5 rep week. I was able to get 5 reps on the 5+ set (the third set) but wasn't able to go past 5 reps. So it'll be interesting on the next phase to see how that 5 rep week goes, plus how the next two weeks play out. I tell ya, it's exciting to me. Almost as much strategy as in any sport you can play.

    Today's training:

    QUADS & CALFS

    SQUATS

    1 x 5 @ 65% 1RM
    1 x 5 @ 75% 1RM
    1 x 5 @ 85% 1RM

the third set felt heavy, but not complaining.

    LEG PRESS

    3 x 6
    1 x 8

I had been doing machine hacks, but decided to switch to leg presses just because I was a bit bored with hacks, so I switched it up.

CALF PRESS ON THE LEG PRESS

    3 x 8
    1 x 11
    2 x 16

Normally I'd been doing 4 sets of seated calf, followed by a couple of sets of calf presses. I thought screw that and just did everything on the leg press.

    LEG EXT

    2 x 16

    COMPLEXES

    Push Press 10, 10, 10
    Bent Over Row 10, 10, 10
    Bench Press 10, 10, 10
    Knee Ups 10, 10, 10
    Jumping Jacks 20, 20, 20

I had the time to throw in complexes at the end, which gave me a much needed HIIT element.

And that was that. A very good session where work was done, and heavy weight was hoisted. Not much more I could have asked for.

Friday, November 15: Delts & Traps

Hey, it's the weekend! And it is earned as it was a good week in the gym. The best part is I am down over 3 lbs body weight wise. I'll chalk it up to keeping a bigger eye on my diet plus the complexes I've been doing a couple times a week. At least it can't hurt

Nice shoulder session this morning. I got in and the power rack was busy, but luckily it was empty by the time I got my warm up in. Timing is everything!

    Today's work:

    DELTS & TRAPS

    MILITARY PRESS

    1 x 5 @ 65% 1RM
    1 x 5 @ 75% 1RM
    1 x 7 @ 85% 1RM

Good session here. I adjusted what my 1RM would be, and it lead to heavier weights lifted. I think If I hadn't adjusted things, I probably could have gone for 10 reps on the 85%, and that is too lite.

    BB SHRUG

    4 x 9

progress here, too. I shrugged more total weight then the previous week. I feel my grip is getting stronger which is also helping.

    CABLE FACE PULLS

    3 x 11
    1 x 12

A weight increase led to some fewer reps, but overall more weight pulled.

    DB FRONT RAISE

    1 x 10
    1 x 11

Standing still here. Might be due to the increased weight on the military presses, not sure.

    DB SIDE RAISE

    1 x 12
    1 x 13

I was able to get one more rep over last week. Yeah buddy!

And that wrapped up the training week. Good progress I feel this week. This program is suiting me pretty well. Seemingly just the right number of days and volume.

Hey it is the weekend and I don't have to work tomorrow. I work just about every Sat/Sun so weekends are no biggie to me.

Nice work on the shoulder presses. I kept my wts light for the most part on 5/3/1 for shoulders. Too many problems for me.

Great to come here and see things are really moving for you, scales and increases in strength whether seen by extra reps or a bump in weights

Workouts are looking huge too. No wonder you're feeling good.

So you benched Tuesday and not Monday, you're a rebel Hoose lol

Monday, November 18: Deads, Hams, Back

Hey, here we go with another week!

Now tell me, what better way to start the week then heavy deadlifting? Huh? Yeah, I didn't think you could come up with a good answer

I think it's important to reiterate what I am doing the rest of the year. I won't be taking anymore scheduled deload weeks. I'll be having a couple of weeks off at the end of the year/beginning of next year, which will work the same as a deload period. I'll continue to work towards adding strength and any muscle that could come with it, but diet wise work towards reducing body fat. When I come back from vacation, I'll have calories a bit higher, either at maintenance or slightly above. I'll spend a few weeks building some muscle back up, then I'll start lowering cals again as spring gets closer. That's the plan for now, but I reserve the right to change my mind.

I made a couple of substitutions this morning. Instead of doing the machine 1 arm rows, I did bb rows. Also, instead of chin grip pulldowns I did close grip pulldowns. Subtle differences, but they matter.

    Today's work:

    DEADS, HAMS, BACK

    DEADS

    1 x 3 @ 70% 1RM
    1 x 3 @ 80% 1RM
    1 x 6 @ 90% 1RM

Very happy with the work here. Felt very strong on the last set. I'm really feeling as if my strength is going up!

    RDL'S

    2 x 10
    2 x 9

Sweet! Upped the weight 10lbs the last 2 sets, and only dropped off a rep per set.

    GOOD MORNINGS

    1 x 15

    BB ROWS

    3 x 6
    1 x 7

I wasn't able to get as many reps at that weight as I had been doing back in the summer. However, then it was the first movement in my back routine. Now it's following deads, so I am sure that plays into the equation.

    CLOSE GRIP PULLDOWN

    2 x 12

And that is how the week got started.

I agree on that philosophy when doing shoulder presses. The shoulder does get pounded with shoulder movements, chest movements, and tricep movements. It's a very fragile area.

Tuesday, November 19: Chest & Arms

Yeah, it's Tuesday, which for me is chest and arm day. You know, since everyone uses the benches on Monday, they are all open on Tuesday

Good session this morning. I seemed to have a bit of an attitude training this morning, which led to feeling pretty strong and gave me pretty good focus on all lifts. Progress was made all around I believe.

    Today's training:

    CHEST & ARMS

    BENCH

    1 x 3 @ 70% 1RM
    1 x 3 @ 80@ 1RM
    1 x 4 @ 90@ 1RM

    BB INCLINE BENCH

    3 x 8
    1 x 10

The same number of total reps as last week, but with a weight increase. Progress, it does a body good.

    LIFE FITNESS PEC FLY

    1 x 25
    1 x 18

Yeah, underestimated the weight on the first set. Probably a tad too low on the second set as well. I hadn't really done these since summer, but really felt like throwing them in today.

    EZ BAR CURL

    1 x 8
    2 x 10

One total rep over last week.

    ALT DB CURL

    1 x 14
    1 x 15

    BB CLOSE GRIP BP

    2 x 9
    1 x 10

    One total rep increase.

    CABLE PRESSDOWN

    2 x 12

And that is how the training went. Felt it was a good showing, and a good way to head into tomorrow's non-lifting day. My back is experiencing DOMS this morning from yesterday's session. No doubt it was from the BB rows, which I hadn't done since summer.

They (BB Rows) will definitely work lower back, especially on a day that already includes Deadlifts and GMs.

Thursday, November 21: Quads & Calfs & Complexes

Oh wow, it's Thursday but it feels like it should be Saturday. Been a rough week at work, with some stressful issues coming down the pike. It's been one intense issue after the other, but I think we finally have it all fixed. lol Nothing like stress to help motivate your training

Quad work this morning, which is always good at pushing out some stress. I had the time at the end of the workout to fit in some complexes for cardio work. I wasn't able to push past 3 reps on the third set of squats, but then again 3 reps are all that are required. But it does signify I have reached about what my current limit is, which is ok.

    Today's training:

    QUADS, CALFS & COMPLEXES

    SQUATS

    1 x 3 @ 70% 1RM
    1 x 3 @ 80% 1RM
    1 x 3 @ 90% 1RM

Next weeks 5, 3, 1 rep scheme will be interesting when I go for the third set. Really looking forward to it!

    LEG PRESS

    2 x 6
    2 x 8

I am writing this all from memory as I left my log book in the car, but I think this was a 2 rep increase over the previous week

    LEG EXT

    2 x 15

    CALF PRESS ON LEG PRESS

    4 x 8

I think this was the number of reps I got lol

    SEATED CALF RAISE

    3 x 9

    COMPLEXES

The weighted movements were performed with just a 40lb pre-weighted bar. Obviously not performed anywhere near failure.

    Shoulder press 10, 10, 10
    Back Row 10, 10, 10
    Bench Press 10, 10, 10
    Arm Curl 10, 10, 10
    Knee Raises 12, 12, 12
    Jumping Jacks 20, 20, 20

And that was how it went. A good session, and progress was made.

Thanks, DNG. One thing that I really came to realize this year was the need to think ahead. I have usually been too wrapped up in what was going on now to not think how things would play out going forward.

Yep, IW...the certainly did. Plus since I had gone 3 or 4 months without the bb rows, I really felt them.

Sunday, November 24: Deads, Hams, Back

Yeah, yeah. I know. I'm behind on posting my training. Yada yada yada.

So since I last posted, I trained Friday, Sunday and this morning. I won't post Friday's. Just not in the mood to post 3 training sessions. But I will post yesterday's and today's sessions. I'm starting this week on Sunday just due to Thanksgiving. As of now, I am planning on training yesterday, today, Wednesday and Thursday. I didn't want to train this coming Friday because my gym is near all the shopping and I know getting there will be a bear.

Nutrition wise I have had a bit of a roadblock. I've been suffering some stomach issues, mostly digestion related. So not able to pound down as much protein as I need to, so just basically eating what I can. Been slowly feeling better the last couple of days, so as long as I don't do something dumb I should be back at full eating by the end of the week.

Yesterday started the training week with deads. No better way to start the week.

    DEADS, HAMSTRINGS, BACK

    DEADS

    1 x 5 @ 75% 1RM
    1 x 3 @ 85% 1RM
    1 x 4 @ 95% 1RM

    RDL'S

    3 x 9
    1 x 10

    LEG CURL

    2 x 13

    BB ROW

    2 x 6
    2 x 7

not really feeling strong with these.

    CLOSE GRIP PULLDOWN

    1 x 12
    1 x 13

    REVERSE FLY

    1 x 15
    1 x 15

Monday, November 25: Chest & Biceps

Ohhhhh, I sure didn't want to wake up this morning. As a result, I got there late and wasn't able to get in all the arm movements I normally do. But I got all the chest movements in, and that is the biggie.

    Today's training:

    CHEST & BICEPS

    BENCH

    1 x 5 @ 75% 1RM
    1 x 3 @ 85% 1RM
    1 x 2 @ 95% 1RM

Ahhhhh, nice and heavy that last set!

    INCLINE BENCH

    2 x 8
    1 x 10
    1 x 9

one total rep over last week.

    LF PEC FLY

    2 x 18

    EZ CURL

    1 x 8
    1 x 9
    1 x 11

Not really sure how I was able to pound out 11 reps that last set, but I'll take it.

And this was were time ran out. Had to get home to get my son's going and get ready for work. Tomorrow is an off day, and will be back in the gym on Wednesday.

    Take care, everyone.

    Thanksgiving, 2013: Quads and Calves!

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends! I have to say I am thankful again this year for all the support, knowledge, and wisdom I get from coming around here. God bless you all, and please enjoy the day!

I did get up and get my training in. It was quads and calves, and I felt like I was in a pretty good zone!

    The work:

    QUADS & CALVES

    SQUATS

    1 x 5 @ 75% 1RM
    1 x 3 @ 85% 1RM
    1 x 2 @ 95% 1RM

That last rep had me pumped! I wasn't 100% sure I'd be able to get any reps at all, but when I was able to dig in and pull out two reps, I knew it was going to be a good session!

    LEG PRESS

    1 x 6
    2 x 7
    1 x 9

Two total reps more then the week before!

    LEG EXT

    2 x 15

CALF PRESS ON HS LEG PRESS

    4 x 12

A total of 5 more reps over last week. Yeah buddy!

    SEATED CALF RAISE

    3 x 8

    CABLE ROW

    2 x 20

    LIFE FITNESS BICEP CURL

    2 x 20

I did the rows and curls for two reasons. 1) I seemed to have a lot of MMC going this morning. 2) I worked them last on Sunday, and wouldn't work them again until Monday, so was just wanting to get a pump going.

Well, that was a good training session. I hope to have many more to come!

Yeah, the diet is such a struggle. It's hard for me to plan for the last meal of the day, so I usually have to kind of freestyle it.

Friday, November 29th: Delts, Traps, Abs

Welcome to Black Friday! To those of you outside of the United States, that's the day after Thanksgiving that symbolically begins the Christmas shopping season. Stores open insanely early, and people camp out for days to be the first through the door. It's insane sometimes!

I said the heck with that and trained instead. I had a good delt session to round out the week. Had some good gains across the board in the 5/3/1 week. On Thanksgiving I kept the eating in fairly good shape. I have no idea what macros I had, but I doubt I consumed an overly large amount of calories. But still it was good to get in and work with the over amount of carbs I had yesterday lol

    Today's training:

    DELTS, TRAPS, ABZERS

    MILITARY PRESS

    1 x 5 @ 75% 1RM
    1 x 3 @ 85% 1RM
    1 x 3 @ 95% 1RM

On the last rep of the last set, I had to really concentrate and not do a push press instead. I had to remind myself to let my delts do all the work.

    BB SHRUGS

    4 x 12

I actually cut the weight back and upped the reps this will. I did that because I wanted to give my forearm a break. After I finished the military presses and was clearing the bar so I could move it down for shrugs, a guy came up and asked how many more sets I had. I told him 4, and he kind of looked agitated. He asked if he could work in and do squats, but I told him the bar was going to be down so I could do shrugs. He looked pissed that he couldn't get his way and kind of stomped off. It sucks that we only have one power rack, but he got his squats in after I got my shrugs done. For the record, if I could have, I would have been more than willing to let anyone work in if it didn't disrupt what I was doing.

    FACE PULLS

    3 x 12
    1 x 13

Three more total reps over last week.

    WEIGHTED BAR FRONT RAISE

    2 x 10
    1 x 11

    LIFE FITNESS LAT RAISE

    1 x 16
    1 x 18

    KNEE UPS

    3 x 12

    CABLE CRUNCHES

    1 x 15
    2 x 18

And that wrapped up the week in training. Next week starts my last 3 weeks of training on the year. I'll finish it out strong before taking a break to begin next years work.

    MILITARY PRESS

    1 x 5 @ 75% 1RM
    1 x 3 @ 85% 1RM
    1 x 3 @ 95% 1RM

On the last rep of the last set, I had to really concentrate and not do a push press instead. I had to remind myself to let my delts do all the work.
Yep. It's almost a completely different exercise if the legs get involved.

We didn't even think about going out in all the madness this year. We are fast becoming a country full of morons.

Nice work on the 5/3/1 week. Deloading now?

When I see on the news folks getting into fights and risking life and limb for a stupid sale, I figure it's best to pop some pop corn, watch the action on the news and have a good chuckle.

I think sometimes when you get into that zone where you just want to lift as much weight as you can, you can forget what your actual goal is and just do what you can to lift the weight. Hence me reminding myself what I was doing.

Dumb this is, the Black Friday madness will continue as long as retail stores get the business. The only way to end it is for people to stop falling for it.

No, no deload yet. The reason is because I will be taking a couple of weeks off at the end of December/start of January. So to get the next full phase in, I just will start right into it and then have the two week off time. Optimal, no. But it's the best option for now.

Dumb question time: do you do warm-up sets for each compound exercise (and just not bother with typing them out)? I'm sure you covered the topic somewhere already, so my apologies in advance. : o)

Hello, welcome to my thread! And you are correct, I do 2-3 warm-up sets before compound movements. I just never bothered writing them down or even mentioning them. But, they are important. Thanks!
