Has anybody here had the flu yet this season? My whole family has had it for about the last week or so. I thought I'd escaped (due to mu superior conditioning of course). Of course I'm now on bodybuilding.com at 3:45 est because I'm too congested to sleep. Does anyone have any tips go get rid of this nightmare? I've missed 2 workouts already.

Well I'm IT specialist, I know nothing of medicine and thus am expert in beating flu.

What I always tell my younger colleagues about sicknesses:

Keep very good hand hygiene. If you touch someones keyboard or use public transport or have sick collegue in office, wash your hands before eating, touching your eyes ec...
Good hand hygiene is major factor.

Turn ventilation on.
Eat well and varied foods.
Drink beer.
Train hard.
Rest well.

And if you feel sickness coming, eat lots of C vitamin. Like 2 grams day.

What i witnessed this autumn in one law office. I was there fixing some equipment and in walks their client, obviously and visibly sick. What did secretary do?
First she hot water, tea and cold medicine to meeting room. Then when client left, she picked up disinfectant and cleaned door knobs on all doors that client went through.

I was like wow. Never seen anybody doing that.

Are we talking influenza or the common cold (aka man flu) here? Because there is a huge difference. Last time I had 'flu (Christmas '99) I went from absolutely fine to bedridden in less than two hours. I was knocked for six.

Someone told me the difference between a cold and 'flu is like this: let's say you can see a £10 note (or a $20 bill) out of your window. If you can go outside and pick it up you have a cold. If you can't, it's 'flu.

Either way, both are virii, so MartinMaggie is correct about handwashing. Vit C and zinc will probably help but you will be more susceptible to ailments if you are stressed, overtrained or not getting sufficient sleep.

As far as recovery goes, rest, rest and more rest. If you feel able to go for a walk, do, but you won't be able to recover well from a strenuous workout if your body is also dealing with a virus. Take a decongestant, a steamy bath (with menthol and eucalyptus oils if you have them) and eat a chilli. Keep warm and ride it out.

I've been dealing with a sinus infection for a while, had a cold right after Xmas... still in the gym though. I feel okay now, finally.

The flu is something else, body aches, chills, fever. I had it in 2009 and it kicked my butt for 4 days. Everyone at work has got something.. colds, upper respiratory infections, flu. People haven't been to work this year yet, pretty bad. I did get a flu shot the past 3 years, I guess they work.

On my 6th day of what the Dr says is gastrol viral infection..in other words stomach flu. Nothing anyone can do except ride it out, totally sucks.

You will mis many more workouts if you do not allow yourself to get better. If it was a cold that would be one thing, but this is the flu. jut take the necessary time off.

There's a nasty stomach flu going around here right now. The fiancé got it bad enough that I had to take her in to emergency for an IV. She never complains when she's sick so I knew this one was horrible.

Thanks for this and all the other posters advice. I will send wifey to the store for vitamins. Even though I want to train, I'm way to weak. I'm just not used to sitting on my a** all day.

Too many people say they have the flu when they just have a bad cold.

Don't want to jinx myself but I have not been seriously ill in over 12 years. And I haven't missed a day of work due to illness in over 7 (had some nasty stomach bug in 2005 and puked my guts out for about 12 hours and had to take a day off work).

My mother has been violently ill with the flu. Knocked her out for about 6 days. She's on the mend now.

For colds, can't beat Cold-FX. Take the extra strength at the onset and it will lessen the duration and severity of your cold. Take Immunity-FX daily during cold and flu season.

Anything bronchial, I find ginger tea knocks it out quick. Steep chopped ginger root in boiled water, add a little honey. It burns going down, but it's great.

I know there's no clinical data for chicken soup, but it just makes me feel better.

Looks to be a bad flu season this year. If you've got it, you just don't have the strength to do much of anything. I don't know what I had back in November, but I pushed it, got back into the gym and had a pretty decent workout. The next day I relapsed with a raging fever, knocked me off my feet for another 4 or 5 days. Take the needed time to rest.

I haven't been this sick in a long long time. I never and do mean never miss work yet I missed all 3 days this week due to this. Get a common cold and I just keep plugging along and in a day or 2 it's over.

Yup, I had the flu several years ago. Went to work feeling fine, and within a very short period of time felt so sh!tty I could hardly move. I was shocked at how fast it hit me.

No, it doesn't .... The common cold is also viral (caused by a rhinovirus). I was around sick people all through holidays, and thought I got away scot-free ...... that is, until yesterday. Seems that I have also caught the bug.

Flu virus and a new strain of Norwalk virus are going around now. Haven't caught either and I don't want to. I haven't gotten a flu shot for maybe ten years. It never made much difference to me. Have had the flu only twice in my life, at 13 and 31, both times on my birthday--sucked.

Extra Vitamin C will probably help but meds and bedrest are really the ticket.

Hang a sprig of fresh eucalyptus in your shower and inhale the steam. That helps clear congestion. But ensure you get the fresh stuff, and not the dried. The dried is loaded with chemicals that you don't want to be inhaling! lol... Florists carry fresh.

Stomach flu is not flu, it's a virus. Flu kicks you so much with fever, aches. So much your body hair hurts.
