She is always super happy and super nice coming to ask me how I like Tulsa and my job. In the 5 months that I have been here, I have never seen her sad, mad or miss a day at work.

I would also say my dad is one of those people. I've asked him several times why he doesn't cut down on the amount of work he takes on or days he works since it is no longer necessary. He works 7 days a week. But he says he enjoys the challenges of work and that he would have nothing to do if he were at home. He doesn't watch TV, he doesn't watch movies, he doesn't really listen to music. Really, his only hobby outside of work is the stock market. So it's go to work, meet new people, and get the fulfillment of fixing their problems or sit in front of a computer all day and watch numbers move.
The woman may well be faking it. I know a lot of people like that: perpetually cheerful at work, and ****ing miserable in their job.

Your dad strikes me as equivalent to someone who sits around all day playing video games. No offense, but working because you have no life outside of work (or are escaping from your personal life through work) is not equivalent to being happy and fulfilled by work.

Maybe. But is being fake happy at work and actually miserable inside better or worse than being miserable at work and actually miserable inside? Don't know if that makes sense, lol.

Ideally, one would quit and find a job they're happier in. I've never understood the whole thing where you're supposed to be ****ing bubbly and perky if you aren't feeling it. It makes about as much sense to me as asking someone how they're doing when you don't give a **** about the answer and the person answering is going to lie.

the issue here is there's not a single person with any job who doesn't feel like they're "working" at some point while doing their job during their career. Most of us have jobs where we feel like we're "working" pretty much all the time.

The guys that do Nitro Circus sure as hell have a lot of fun, but they travel a lot too and they put their bodies/lives on the line to have all that fun. Pro athletes put their bodies on the line and they're in a high pressure situation because they better perform or the next guy in line is gonna take their job. They better be working their ass off to physically able and then do plenty of studying to make sure they're doing the right things on the field or court. So basically if you're paid to do something you work and at some point it's gonna feel like work and be a burden. That's just the way it is.

However, there is a % of people who can honestly say that they enjoy what they do and are glad that they have their job. Of course they wish they could do something else because the grass is always greener on the other side right? Not really. Some people might not like what they're doing, but maybe they find fulfillment in the fact that their paycheck pays the bills, their hours allow them to spend time with family, and maybe even have time to enjoy their hobbies. Your job would have to suck pretty bad to sacrifice all that just because you didn't like what you were doing especially in today's market.

I'd guess there's a fair amount of people that fall somewhere in between I legitimately like what I do because at the end of the day I make a difference even though the work is hard and the pay aint that great or my job is hard and I don't like it, but it pays the bills and I off enough to be able to be with my loved ones.

I'm not suggesting anyone keep a job if they're being treated like **** or flat out being used. The grass is greener on the other side if you're that person. That's not cool. Work sucks at some point or another no matter what your job is.

EDIT: just wanted to add that if your job is stressing you out so much that it's affecting the quality of your life then you should quit.

I like small cities, but I don't think Tulsa or religious towns are really for me. I think I would waste away my 20s if I stayed here. Also, my parents didn't like the idea of me taking this job from the start. For one, they want me to be near home so they can see me. Basically all my aunts, uncles, cousins, and rest of my family live in Miami or Ft. Lauderdale and see each other constantly. Also, they are not a fan of me making stuff for the military that is going to go out and kill people. And like I said before, engineering hasn't interested me that much for a few years now and I would like to find something else that I can turn into a career or atleast something fun that wouldn't drive me crazy. Like if I find a job in Boca Raton, Stig and I can open a gym together which seems like fun. And if that doesn't happen, my friend is a professor at FAU and is buying a bunch of powerlifting equipment for research and hopefully a powerlifting team. So even if I'm not so happy at work, I would have a bunch of friends to hang out with, a team to train with, and parents could come see me whenever.
I would kill for a job where I make stuff that kills. Instead I'm making medical implants n stuff. Wanna trade?

I think when it comes to jobs you have to look at it in parts. Nobody I know of loves every part of their job. for example, I'm in consulting and I love the fact that I get to travel all around the world. However, I hate the fact that I can never commit to a normal lifting cycle because of it. I also love the fact that my work is not mundane/boring/repetitive and I get to to meet new people on different projects at different clients. but some of those people I meet I absolutely hate, and some of the projects are the worsts things ever. It's all about pluses and minuses, and in the end...you just gotta hope the pluses outweight the minuses, but for most people I don't think it does

I keep thinking I'm getting a "real job" with every time I've moved. But it just never is. 99% of people in "business" don't do more than 5-10 hours of work during a work week, unless it happens to be your busy time. Over time, you just get really good at pretending to work. In the last 3 weeks, I haven't done more than 3 hours of work combined. It's weird to me to think about all that.

Yea, and I have been thinking about that. Some of the stuff I can't evaluate properly because this is my 1st, real engineering job. For all I know, this is a better gig than anything else I could get with my experience right now. I have no idea because I have nothing to compare it to. So I can only hope that the next job I find is more enjoyable, has younger employees, is in a location I can settle down, will have more growth for me, etc.

Over time, you just get really good at pretending to work. In the last 3 weeks, I haven't done more than 3 hours of work combined. It's weird to me to think about all that.
how do i get one of these pretend jobs of which you speak?

It'd be like staying fat while running marathons because it's more impressive to finish a marathon when you're overweight. It might be impressive in the short run, but in the long run it just doesn't make any sense. ~breathinglife

    Arian....ponder this for a minute.

You took the job for experience. You had no experience before taking it. You had a toughish time finding this gig.

Would you consider one job with 5 months experience, while leaving the company by your own choice a wise move? Seems like more of a move that would red flag you for question in the interview. How would you answer the question of "Why did you leave the last job?" in an interview? May be a good move to keep the job, keep on with getting experience while testing the waters with jobs that interest you. It appears much more responsible on future job interviews if you leave a company for another opportunity then it would if you left because you just didn't like it.

I thought of the same thing. Would working at a place for 6 months look bad on my resume. Don't really know anyone who has had more than one engineering job to get advice. My dad said I could always say I had family issues rather than saying I didn't like the job. I don't know. I mean I could take one of those under qualified jobs right now but it pays like $3-4/hour less and its only a CAD modeler, don't even need an engineering degree. But I don't know if that would be a better foot in the door at the company to then go to an engineering position.

No one has a crystal ball....but there is a lot that goes into these decisions. Just have to evaluate the trade offs. If a pay cut is acceptable to take a job that is closer to home and will increase your happiness overall enough to justify the cut....then go for it. If the money is a necessity, prolly want to keep the better paying job. Getting hired in a company and showing them what you can do is a good thing. Experience is a good thing. Being able to apply to other jobs if positions become available is a good thing.

Yeap, that is why it is kind of a tough decision. And, really, when I say I wanna quit this job, I kind of want to quit engineering altogether. I wish I could do what Erick is doing, open my own gym and train people. But it is probably a smarter idea to get an engineering job near where I want to open the gym and work on getting it started on the side. Then as it builds up and I think the income from that can hold me over, I can quit engineering.

Oh well if all I need boobies for is so drunk guys have something to look at, I'm good. I stuff and I got enough stuffing so if I get tackled I'm protected. Bonus!

I live in one of Canada's biggest cities and I won't be presumptous enough to rate myself but you can ask stig or arian. The thing is, I like dignity too, and a lot of the ways I think you're suggesting require that you not have that.
