Adjustable Dumbells - worth getting ?

I know the absolute ideal would be to have a full rack of dumbells of different weights but space wise and costs wise, that's not an option for me

How good are the adjustable dumbell sets ?

    e.g. this one

    thanks guys

Those are horrible. Seen them in person and they are just cheap. Won't last long.

    These are better options:

Two things you will quickly learn from your question:

    1. Use the search option in the forum. You will literally find so many threads on adjustable dumbbells, your answers will be easy to find.
    2. Bowflex adjustables is pure junk.

If you want adjustable dumbbells, search around for Power Blocks or Iron Masters.

I commandeered my wife's bow flex adjustable weights to supplement my olympic barbell set. They are plastic and not the heaviest duty things in the world and only go up to 52.5 pounds if I recall correctly. I use them for concentration curls and lateral raises. They are still in one piece after a few months continuous use and in good repair.

However, I treat them as a light duty piece of hobby equipment and I don't drop them to the floor as I bellow like a retard like some folks do after a set. They will not survive that for long.

I already had them handy ,so I use them. I would not rush out to buy them otherwise unless they were dirt cheap. I also will not rush out to replace them until a killer deal pops up on something better or they break.

I have had the Boflex 1050 ( I think) bought them new and did not like them one bit. After just a short time they were sticking. They are plastic and will break if not handled delicately.

I currently have the Powerblock 5-130 and I like them. They do have the draw back of fitting your hands in to get to the handle but to me that's minor.

    Anyway good luck in choosing.

I have a 48in wide rack with 10 sets of pro bells (30-120 in 10lb increments). I use 1.25 and 2.5lb platemates for increments between them. Thats a pretty small space for so much weight. Cost was ridiculous but I've put them to use for 10 years now so no question it was worth it. I also have the Bowflex 1090s (my wifes). These feel like cheap weider type weights and really don't make movements feel like they do with pro bells. They are quick change though. If I were on a budget and had no space there is no doubt I'd opt for the Ironmasters.
