I have made a good life out of not saying the 1st thing that comes into my mind. Finding the right place and time, and the right words and inflection is as much art as science. I appreciate those who do step out and take the risk, I also watch closely to see the affect to determine if I want to emulate.
How will I pay? About a year and a half ago I sat in a Department-wide emergency meeting regarding a very large oil spill into one of our largest rivers. The Governor had just gone on TV that morning and announced to the impacted landowners that they should go out and grab a sample of the contamination. He would provide the sample jars. A wonderful bit of grandstanding with many obvious problems.
When that topic came up at the meeting I asked who was going to explain to the Governor that he was placing the State at risk for a lawsuit if one of the landowners got hurt or sick from taking a sample. Much less the obvious problems of untrained people grabbing samples in an undocumented and unapproved manner, and then storing them in variously tragic ways such as their personal refrigerator. The data would be useless. I was Bertstaired by the masses...
Why? Our Gov was well known for relieving people of duty or otherwise blacklisting them if he felt they crossed him, disobeyed him, or tried to make him look bad in any significant way. Two days later we had a team down providing oversight for contractors to take samples on the impacted properties.
And 3 weeks ago I was sitting in a Labor/Management Meeting and we were visiting about our facilities. I support the vast majority of the issues the Union brings up as they thankfully want to be taken seriously. But I could not resist as we had just gone through a 4 week fiasco to replace a waterless urinal. I laughed and called it a definite union job...as it took 1 week and 20 minutes to take the urinal off the wall, 1 week and 20 minutes to fix the plumbing, 1 week and 20 minutes to put the new sheetrock up, and 1 week and 20 minutes to put the new urinal in. Most eveyone caught the fact that I was obviously joking, as it was more about scheduling and resources, not about sending 3 people and 40 minutes to do a 1 person 20 min job, but a few bristled pretty hard! Who peed in their cheerios?Journal- One of the Ogres

BSG,
I get all that. That's why I said at work I watch what I say. Elsewhere among friends and family? Nah. These are my people who know me and like me the way I am.
I guess I was more wondering you feel you need to thread carefully in your home life. Personally I appreciate honesty but I am well aware not everyone wants to know exactly what you are thinking. I pretty much feel if I ask I want to know whether I like the answer or not. I also expect that my husband not be afraid to speak his mind. I am not saying he should say I'm being a bitch or something similar if he is upset with me. I would hope that he doesn't say things like that simply because they do not cross his mind not because he is afraid how I will take it. But if you disagree with me or feel I am wrong tell me. I can handle it. Sometimes I tell him he is talking too much. He does not get mad. I asked him the last time we went out if I looked ok. He said I looked great but he didn't like the shoes I was wearing (they were "weird). No big deal. I wore them anyway because I really liked them. I asked and I expected an honest answer. Maybe I am odd.
The different dynamics of relationships is interesting to me in any case.Last edited by penny0527; 02-01-2013 at 10:27 AM.

Home life- hardly ever hold back. In fact, years ago I had the, "Toughen up, buttercup" talk with Gen. She needed to say what was on her mind. I may get a little frustrated at the moment, but I am will take it at face value. She has all of our best interest as a family, so I needed to know, even if it is tough stuff.
And there are certainly times that I need the accountability.
I held it all in as a child...srs. Even my mother commented over New Years that I certainly learned to let it all out as an adult! LOL. I would rather it all be on the table. No time for pretending we are OK when we aren't.Journal- One of the Ogres
