A Phd is just a piece a paper. If you have no experience why should someone hire you over the guy that just got his bachelor's? You will likely demand a significantly higher salary and stick around half as long. IMO you should get a 4 year degree get your feet wet, get a master's when you're ready to handle lower level management and then a PhD when you're ready to reach the top of your field. To get it all at once is idiotic at best.

that's probably true in most cases - but the more accomplished individuals in my field tend to hold doctorates, and my perspective has always been that obtaining the ultimate level of education would facilitate my advancement
i still think it will eventually pay off, but i am extremely frustrated by the difficulties i've encountered thus far
i've had one interview (for an academic position) in the last three months - and they told me they're looking for someone more "mid-career". good luck with that when you're paying 60k
oh, and for those saying the lack of experience is the issue - i have several years of industry experience under my belt, including multiple years of part-time consulting while in graduate school.

50% of graduates are either unemployed or underpaid.
Going to college for the paper is not the important part, networking is.
I do believe, however, that you should continue education for the love of learning more rather than feeling obligated to obtain a degree.--512 Austin TX crew---
